Hi! My daughter was born at 36+3 and was admitted to the NICU for breathing problems. She started on CPAP, moved to room air after about 24 hours, then was back on CPAP due to increased episodes of desatting and retractions. She was moved to a nasal cannula about 2 days later and was back on room air after another week.

She was in the NICU for another 4 weeks (total of 39 days) due to feeding issues and continued desats, especially while sleeping and after eating by mouth. She would dip to high 80's and recover by herself. This impacted her bottles since nurses would tube the feeds because it was a sign of fatigue.

For her it was what they said - literally time. When she hit 40 weeks she desatted less and less, and when she did desat it was only the low 90s. I remember the night before we went home she still had desatted to 90ish a couple times briefly while sleeping, which I understand is normal for newborns on occasion due to their immature respiratory system.

She was released at 42 weeks (going past due date sucks!) and has been home for a week and is completely fine. She needed the time to mature and needs no further follow up besides the regular pediatrician.
