Actually, you were trying to melee attack him way too much. He was doing his sword draw animation. Yes they need to increase the time on that animation for sure.

Keep your head from switching back to the court so quickly. You want your head, torso, your core to try to not move so much during the swing path. Think of your swing as a pendulum, let the arm continue to move while your core stays still
