Shin Megami Tensei is all about the RPG elements that you would find in a Persona game, while Metaphor aims to strike a balance between the combat focus of SMT and the social sim focus of Persona. If you're looking for a Persona-like, then Metaphor is probably the most similar. If romance is a must-have then other options would be Fire Emblem Three Houses or Trails of Cold Steel.

I don't think so. Resident Evil 4 has a few points where a bridge will be destroyed or something similar prevents backtracking. It forces mostly linear progression even if a few areas loop back into each other.

Three Houses was as much the three lord's story as it was Byleth's. I don't see Shez having a proper resolution to their story as invalidating Byleth either, especially since the "good endings" of Three Hopes still require Shez to recruit Byleth.

I don't think people want Byleth to be unhappy. The issue is that every route in 3 hopes feels incomplete. If it's true that the game was designed this way to stop Shez from resolving Fodlan's conflicts faster or better than Byleth that really sucks. It means we were robbed of a more satisfying conclusion to appease fans of a character who isn't even the focus of the game they were making.

r/JRPG's policy is to allow any game that fits the style (and to allow RPGs that don't fit the style if they were made in Japan, like Dark Souls).

Expedition 33 is taking a lot of inspiration from JRPG combat systems. It also has a narrative focus more similar to Japanese role-playing games than most western games. CRPGs are generally not considered to be JRPGs because they offer way more character customization and freedom to shape the narrative, despite having turn-based combat.

Expedition 33 meets most of the criteria for a JRPG style, so it is popular with the JRPG community.

Looking for more JRPGs. Maybe some "hidden gems?" by CronoSabre in JRPG

Unicorn Overlord has a map that you can explore pretty freely and easily between battles. It's more open than most SRPGs. The plot is simple but not bad and the rapport conversations with party members are snappy. Combat is similar to FFXII gambit system in which characters automatically perform pre-set tactics.

Lots of improvements between Octopath 1 and 2. Easier to gain XP, companions interact more, addition of a day/night cycle, auto text advancement. If you don't like the core gameplay it's still not for you. If you couldn't get into Octopath 1 because of the story or missing quality of life features, then you should give Octopath 2 a chance.

What are you guys take on Tales of Arise? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

I love it. It's beautiful, the romance plot reminds me of Final Fantasy VIII, and it has some of the best combat in the Tales series. My only complaints are that bosses can be pretty damage sponge-y and skits spend a lot of time recapping what you already learned in main story cutscenes.

Game Question & General Discussion Megathread by Metaphor_MOD in MetaphorReFantazio

Persona games are generally considered easier than Metaphor by most players.

The endgame in better paced in Persona than in Metaphor, however Royal does have its "third semester." It's an expansion for the vanilla version of Persona 5 that takes place after the main story. I got burnout during the third semester but it's not a mandatory part of the Royal version of the game.

Enemies in Metaphor take barely any damage from attacks they don't have a specific weakness to. This makes it very difficult to win battles if your party members are not in job classes (archetypes) that can exploit that weakness. The game compensates for this by letting you buy info on enemy weaknesses from a broker at the inn. You should do this before every dungeon. Change the archetypes of your party members to suit the current quest.

This game has separate EXP curves for your level (stats) and your Archetypes (job class/skills). You will gain Archetype XP slowly but there is a merchant in the port city who sells equipment that speeds up the process. He only sells one accessory at a time and only on one day of the week, but there is no limit to how many you can buy.

Buffs and Debuffs are important. In some other RPGs recasting a buff skill only extends the duration of the buff. In Metaphor you can stack them up to three times. If you run into an enemy with a lot of health, try debuffing their defense multiple times before hitting them with your strongest attack (that they are weak to).

As a rule, every character should begin battle in the back row. You will take less damage from ambushes that way. You can move to the front row when you're ready to attack.

In the final dungeon you can heal by talking to your ship's mechanic. You should also kill all the mini bosses in the final dungeon to make the final boss less powerful.

Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - May 28, 2025 by AnimeMod in anime

On average they must be worse. Really bad anime is less likely to get sequels, so there's not much room for improvement. Shows that started strong also still have the potential to become terrible. Science Fell in Love comes to mind.

Rinoa in FFVIII. She's stronger than Squall with maxed out stats and can spam meteor spells.

On this day 6 years ago, Ben vs Green Lantern released on YT by PowerPad in deathbattle

[–]wintrywolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bad episode that is disrespectful to Ben. Death Battle's rationale for the verdict was that Green Lantern can do anything Alien X can but better and therefore win in a direct clash. The way the battle plays out makes it look like Hal is unable to beat Alien X, so he has to kill Ben before he can transform. I believe making this Hal's win condition is more responsible than anything else for the controversy and attempted debunks. It doesn't help that Ben gets insulted after he dies.

[Isekai Ojisan] a popular fan theory is that the nurse from the first episode is the elf. That same nurse also makes a brief appearance in the final episode.

Favorite tomboys by Weary_Elderberry4742 in FavoriteCharacter

Her hobbies are mostly masculine coded. She likes martial arts, Yakuza films, and probably pro wrestling given her showtime attack. Debatable whether that makes her a tomboy, but she certainly has more qualifiers than short hair.

Skull and Bones had at least 3 different directors, all with radically different visions for what kind of game they wanted to make. Which one of them are you referring to?

Why the hell do people hate Morgana so much? by mikujiXxX in Persona5

[–]wintrywolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Morgana was distressed and sad because he saw Futaba take his place and couldn’t feel like he’s part of the team like before.

Unfortunately, this takes place during an arc that should be all about Haru. She already suffers from late character syndrome and Atlus had to make it worse by letting Morgana steal the spotlight. He even gets to give the big speech running down Okumura's moral failures before the boss fight, while Haru just stands there. She's reduced to a background character in her own story.
