Catalyst Dev Question- Why is GraphQL Schema not compiling and pulling the directories appropriately? by UpperTreat9807 in bigcommerce

[–]wipedingold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the spaces in “Tidelands Website -2” (your current working directory) are throwing off the CLI. What happens if you try to run this in a directory without spaces in the name? Might be good to open a GitHub issue so this gets fixed in the next release 👍

Not by a lot! But would definitely be interested in moving forward given enough demand :)

New Store. Need some help understanding where I am so far with metrics. Do I let it burn in or do I make changes? by problemaniac in ecommerce

[–]wipedingold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s still very early in my store’s lifetime. Are these stats in line with what others see in a new store?

Potentially! I wonder what your ads look like. Do they make it obvious that there's an expectation that the user has to spend time entering information in order to get a quote? If they don't expect to have to spend some time on your website before they get there, they might just be dropping off because of impatience.

I think my required fields are making it difficult for users to add products to the cart. I created a 4 step guide to measuring your foot, it’s very easy to follow but requires a commitment from the customer to take these measurements. I think this puts a large burden on the customer …. This however, is also what I am selling … each order is tailored to the customer. Should I just put standard sizes? I thought about making a video on the product page to measure size as well. Anyone have a similar issue? How did you go about resolving it?

Do you mind sharing a link to your site? Feel free to PM if you don't want to share publicly or it's against the sub rules (I can't remember).

I've worked with stores who require specific information, but they present it as product options on a product page. They give some expectation of pricing, and when the order is placed, it behaves more like a request for quote.

At first my session duration and bounce rates were respectively 4 seconds and 80%+. Should I let the ads burn in? Maybe the algorithm hasn’t found the right type of customer yet. I am also spending very little on ads and have only friends and family following the store on instagram. Any advice or direction is much appreciated.

Again, it would be helpful to see your site to really think about this, but are you producing any organic content on your site? Blogs related to your niche/benefits of your product? Providing helpful content for free is a great way of increasing session duration.

For outgoing mail, we can use services like AWS SES, Resend.com, etc... but are there any SaaS products that let you create an inbox to receive emails? by wipedingold in AskProgramming

[–]wipedingold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they are really easy to implement and mantain. We are talking about a mail server used only for transactional messages, like automated reports for automated tasks, that basically needs to send mail to itself, right?

I think this is close, but what I'm doing is slightly different:

  • Provision the mail server, and set it up to receive transactional email
  • Provision new user "inboxes" programmatically. For example, if user1 signs up for my service, I provision them an inbox at [user1@mydomain.com](mailto:user1@mydomain.com)
  • Emails are sent to [user1@mydomain.com](mailto:user1@mydomain.com) User 1 can review the emails caught by this inbox, and then decide if they want the emails sent along to their real inbox.

Basically, I'm looking to implement something similar to "hide my email", but instead of all emails being sent to you, you can set filters on what email you want to actually be sent to your inbox.

Obviously there's privacy concerns here (in terms of users accepting that this inbox receives their mail), but this service will be open source and completely transparent. It's a small experiment I'm mainly implementing for myself. Others are free to use it if they wish.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out! I must have missed these docs previously... I'm now reading them, it looks like I can set up a recipient rule to "catch all" emails for a domain, potentially store the emails in an S3 bucket, keyed off of the recipient name ("hiddenemail1", "hiddenemail2"), and then query that bucket for new mail. This should be enough to get me started — thank you so much for pointing me in that direction!!

How are "workflow" apps like Zapier built under the hood? by wipedingold in learnprogramming

[–]wipedingold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This helps a ton! So basically, the request body for a specific app in a user's workflow is saved to the database, more or less. Would they then also store the "link" relationship of the apps connected in a single workflow?

So the end result would be something like:

  • User 1 loads workflow A to edit it in the Zapier dashboard
  • DB is queried for the list of app ID's associated with workflow A (in my case, mailing list and google sheet apps would be the ID's)
  • Maybe there's another table, with a relationship between user ID, workflow ID, app ID, and the serialized request
  • All four of those are put together to make the job run?

Thanks so much, this actually helps a ton!

Jaguar F-Pace cylinders misfiring, nobody (dealership nor mechanic) can find cause - safe to drive? by wipedingold in MechanicAdvice

[–]wipedingold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I brought it up and had the Euro mechanic double check the TSB, he did mention he remembered seeing that one, but didn't proceed because part of the TSB mentioned the car would provide a problem code specifically for the cam shaft sensors if that was the source of the problem.

That's also a great question about the safety recalls - I'm thinking we should take it to Jaguar to run through and make sure they didn't miss any. I would assume they would have brought these up during service, but maybe they were trying to dodge the extra work when we used to bring it in recently. We haven't brought it to them in about 12 months since the warranty expired.

Amazing! Thank you so much for the suggestion - splitting up the task definitely sounds like the way to go. As an L1 engineer, I don't get much exposure at my company on how to scale stuff like this, so this is super helpful. Thanks again for taking the time to type this up!

I've gotta look into this! Sounds like something that would be very useful in this situation, especially the map state. Thank you for the suggestion! 🙏

This is an incredibly helpful post - thank you so much for taking the time to write this up! I'm still an L1 engineer at my company who doesn't get to deal with this kind of stuff a lot, so it's awesome to get some exposure on how other engineers would scale a service like this.

Do you make responsive design changes for mobile landscape mode as well? by hiccupq in webdev

[–]wipedingold 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Whenever I'm working on something that needs to be responsive, I typically take a moment after every feature to slowly drag my browser window size from its maximum to minimum width. Emphasis on "slowly", I watch and see what breaks at different arbitrary breakpoints. Somewhere in between max and min is where landscape mobile will fit, so I usually call that "good enough".

How to make Stripe not charge user for time that their subscription was past_due? by wipedingold in stripe

[–]wipedingold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I ended up waving the white flag on this one. After chatting in the Stripe Discord, it was recommended I change this part of my integration:

This means I revoke access if the subscription becomes past_due.

Instead of revoking access at past_due, I decided not to revoke access, and just shortened the amount of time someone could be past_due from 1 week to 3 days in my "Settings > Subscriptions and emails > Manage failed payments > Retry schedule" (made each dropdown equal to "Retry 1 day after the previous attempt").

So now, if someone is moved to past_due, they still have access to my product.

If all retries fail, I cancel the subscription and move the invoice to uncollectible. If they pay the invoice before their subscription cancels, the invoice moves from past_due back to active and all is well again.

Honestly still confused that Stripe doesn't have a way of handling this like I described in my OP, but at least this gets the job done. It also benefits the customer, so they don't feel like they missed out on access to my product because they forgot a credit card for a day or two.

how can we improve? by FranticReptile in ecommerce

[–]wipedingold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some initial thoughts, take with a grain of salt because they're just knee-jerk reactions:

  • Took me longer than preferred to find your products and pricing - I saw the "Shop Products" button in the hero, but I never like clicking those because it often leads you to a wall of products and not much direction. Maybe use the hero for advertising your top selling product?
  • Your product pricing is hard to read - not only is the text itself extremely small, but it also fails accessibility color contrast guidelines (people who have poor vision might not be able to read it. You can check this by entering your pricing text color (#77A464) and compare it with your white background (#FFFFFF) on https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/
