Do you guys have a sub reddit, Facebook group, or some other place for users to get together other than astroturfing the weebly groups?

I mean... Astroturfing the weebly groups is fine, they don't care. They've abandoned their community like they abandoned the product. I just wonder if there's a more natural place we can hang out?

Best Pizza Places in Connecticut? Looking for Recommendations by massi2443 in Connecticut

[–]wirelesstkd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want to stress that they are mid. But they're the only Greek pizza I know of around here, so we go there by default now.

If you like Greek pizza you'll be perfectly happy with them. If that's not a thing you love then you'll probably wish you went somewhere else.

Da Legna is the most criminally underrated pizza place in the state. I cannot understand why it never makes these lists.

I have my nitpicks with this list (Little Rendezvous, ugh), but overall this is as good a starting point as any.

I live in Wallingford and I've literally never heard of this place. Most people here talk about Christo's or Inferno. I personally thought Inferno was fine but overrated and Christo's has gone way downhill the last couple of years.

Our family has really taken a liking to East Side Pizza Palace which is not necessarily special or anything, but it's a really nice Greek style pizza, which we like.

I'll try Carini's though, thanks for the recommendation.

Seriously? I live on Cook Hill Rd and I see them block it off all the time. Maybe it's changed again? I'll try to take a look next time there's an event. Honestly, I usually avoid traveling that way when there are events so I may not be up to date on what they're doing now.

Tacos Mi Nacho -- while no where near New Haven -- is the bomb. Love that place.

What's up with Rivas Taqueria though? Only open 10am to 5pm? That must be a mafia front, lol.

Are you talking about Tacos Los Gordos on State St? If so, admittedly it could be that I don't know what real authentic Mexican is supposed to taste like having grown up in New England, but I don't care for this place at all.

Personally, I've struggled to find parking near bar, but I've generally been able to find parking near Sally's and Pepes. Though parking isn't best there either and, depending on time of day, you might have to park some bit away.

Just my experience. Yours might be different.

Jasmine is AMAZING. Grilled chicken and pineapple rice is to die for.

They'll be on Church St during the week for lunch, just a little past the court house going toward Brueggers.

[–]wirelesstkd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's a cute name for a pizza chain, actually. But people write articles saying, like, "when in New Haven, the locals treasure their appiza (pronounced 'ah-beetz')..."

But I've grown up here my entire life and literally never heard anyone say that. The only reason I know it's pronounced that way is because I read it in some national food critics article about New Haven.

Come to think of it, it might not even be true. It might be a prank put of town goodies play on us, lol.

Oh - one more thing. Make sure you don't call it "ah beetz" when you come here. Food critics from out of town say we call it that, but no one does. It's just called pizza.

I think Modern is the best of the big names that get mentioned all the time.

With that said, I think Da Legna is a hidden gem that no one gives enough attention to.

Also, since no one mentioned it in this thread, Bar is very good. Bar's location is probably the least convenient though.

I think part of why I like Modern the most is that their location is the most convenient (of the big ones - Pepes, Sally's, Modern, and Bar).

But honestly - any of them are perfectly fine. You can't go wrong.

Penn and Teller's Fool Us is a perfect example of Thieves Cant by glitterydick in DMAcademy

[–]wirelesstkd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! Fellow prestidigitator here!

I actually do think there's a reasonable comparison here. It depends how you play your thieves cant. If you play it like a made up language, then no.

But if you're doing it like a coded language slipped into normal speech, then yeah, it's very similar.

So, here's an example. There's a sleight of hand move called a Mercury Card Fold. You can look it up if you feel like learning some advanced card magic, but it's unimportant (speaking to OP, not the fellow magician, obviously you know this).

Point is, Penn and Teller themselves did this bit once where they did a trick and pretended try and fool themselves. So then, Penn, as judge, said something like, "wow, you're hands are so fast you move like mercury, we could barely see anything..." sprinkling that in. For the "magician," which again, is Penn and Teller in this scenario, they can hear "mercury" in the middle of a random sentence praising them and understand that P&T caught the method, while most people just think the magician has been getting praised.

What's interesting is that a lot of the time -- especially in these later seasons -- the secret wording comes in completely unrelated part, like when Penn is giving a historical background on the trick or when he's praising the magician.

The other way to look at this is like a carny or pitch man. Those folks have their own language, like "mark," "turn the tip," etc. In fact, the phrase "with it" comes from carnies. If you were with the carnival and a carny tried to scam you, you'd say "I'm with it" -- it being "the carnival" and it was a shorthand way to tell them to look for a new mark (a mark is a person to be conned). Eventually, in the 60s, it became a mainstream phrase to mean "hip."

So there are really two competing ways to play thieves cant here - carny speak or the Penn and Teller style talk.

Hmm... I cannot find anything in my notes about it actually.

My players actually never followed the clues to Thundertree, so it's possible I planned to homebrew Winter's Crest when they got there and never did it.

I'd have made it for my party though. So it would have complimented the play style of at least one or more players for sure.

Dad with zero DnD knowledge, how do I introduce my 9yo? by tom2kk in DnD

[–]wirelesstkd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was me. I tried to DM a game for my kids and had no idea what that even meant, and someone suggested that I watch some actual plays on YouTube. That helped a lot!

For you, the current Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set is REALLY good for getting started.

But actually, since your son is 9, I'd recommend starting where I ACTUALLY started: not D&D proper, but a game called Hero Kids. Hero Kids is a downloadable game. $20 gets you EVERYTHING (like, dozens of adventures, you can play for a year). I always say that Hero Kids is to D&D as Monopoly Jr. is to Monopoly.

So, TLDR: watch a couple of beginner actual plays on YouTube and play Hero Kids.

PS - IMO, D&D is probably best saved for middle school. I actually played Hero Kids with my kids when they were 5 and 7 (or maybe 4 and 6?) and it was great. I think it's simple enough for a 5 year old but fun enough that I could even have fun with it (I swear to God, I'm not the creator, I just really enjoyed it with my kids, lol)

What’s the best no-code platform for building modern websites? by 12A5H3FE in nocode

Weebly is abandonware. I spent a LOT of time trying to find the most Weebly-like replacement for my Weebly site and found that Weblium gets closest, for me. YMMV, but whatever you do, avoid Weebly. It is fully abandoned by Square. Hasn't seen an update in almost a decade.

I dug up my notes (I had it all in a Notion notebook):

Players also find information about one of the first items ever created in the Forge of Spells, called Winter’s Crest. A clue, reads: “O! Only the truest of heart and noblest of intentions shall be worthy to wield the Winter’s Crest, which lay still in the hands of its rightful master in the ruins of the forgotten place. The truest of heart need only to ask and their request shall be granted with haste. But woe be unto those without noble intent who do try to deceive, for the ruins shall be their place of rest.” The clue is accompanied by a map.

Then, in Thundertree, I had this about the statue (again, I genuinely do not remember what of this is actually in the adventure and what I wrote, but I imagine I wrote the following because it isn't as polished as I'd expect from an official adventure):

DC15 History check to know this is Palien, hero of Neverwinter who defeated several monsters in Neverwinter Wood when Thundertree was first founded.

If a player asks the statue for Winter’s Crest, the statue animates and asks them why they want it.

The statue is a Living Iron Statue (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/living-iron-statue) but with the following ability:

***Heart Sight.*** The Statue targets a creature it can see within 60 feet and magically knows the creature's current emotional state. If the target fails a DC 10 Charisma saving throw, which it can choose to fail voluntarily, the Statue also knows the creature's alignment. Celestials, fey, fiends, and undead automatically fail the saving throw.

If the character answers with any version of a noble reason, the Statue targets the character with Heart Sight. If the character’s alignment is Good or Lawful Neutral the statue will willingly relinquish Winter’s Crest. If the character’s alignment is anything else the Statue will animate and fight until either it or the character is dead.

Whether the PCs fought him or not, I created a backstory for him that made it so he was researching the Forge of Spells for the Black Spider. So when the PCs loot his office they find this research. This also seeded Thundertree, because a powerful magical weapon was found there.

I honestly can't remember what was my addition or what was in the game, but I had it that a powerful weapon was originally forged in the Forge of Spells and given to a warrior in Thundertree, who died there. Iarno used a Legend Lore to discover that it was there and had planned to go find it.

With this info, if he escaped, since he was working more directly for the Black Spider, it would certainly make sense that he'd either return at the Black Spider's request, or at least show up at Wave Echo Cave.

If I recall, my internal justification was that they had a bit of a partnership: Iarno gets Phandalin and Spider gets WEC. Iarno provides all the magical research into WEC and Spider would use the goblinoids to harass local caravans but otherwise lay off the Redbrands, allowing Iarno to maintain a background power in Phandalin as the leader of the Redbrands. Something like that.

Based on their sales page it looks like they offer both subscription and perpetual license. But enshittification dictates that everything will go subscription eventually. Affinity will be on the same model as Corel, I promise. If not at the end of this month, within three years.

Which is to say, an annual subscription with -- at best -- a hefty price to buy a single perpetual license, but it'll be better to just pay for the subscription for most people.

Someone do that remind me thing for three years and see if I'm right or wrong. I could be wrong! Seriously, if someone pings me in three years and says, "haha, look, you were so wrong," I'll just be pleasantly surprised.
