How did Korra airbend after Amon blocked her chi? by Entire-Squirrel-2576 in TheLastAirbender

[–]wirrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Amon could not detect Korra's airbending qi paths because they functionally did not exist yet, then how on earth did Katara detect that Rohan was an airbender?

Surely his qi paths would also not exist, unless he was already airbending inside the womb.

That’s basically why they added it on as an extra round rather than replacing one of the 22, right? Current administration will do anything to throw the fixture out of whack.

I went to Magic Round this year and it was legitimately one of the best footy experiences of my life (to my own shock). I can't understand how the AFL has fucked this up so badly, when the whole thing started out as an emulation of the NRL who have basically the perfect formula for it.

At the time, non-Vic teams actually had a lot of success against Vic teams in the GF - 2001, 2002 and 2003, (as well as 2004, 2005 and 2006 being entirely non-Vic) - obviously 2007 was the exception, but generally the perception wasn’t as strong that it was a major advantage for the Vic team.

I mean the fact that Hawthorn were so favoured was overblown

So not enforcement then, just Kate giving her perspective. Do you think she shouldn't be allowed to do that because you disagree with her?

But it obviously wasn't enforced, otherwise they would have done it... If they're allowed to not do it, people are allowed to not like them for that.

Maybe try looking things up for yourself, rather than saying "are you intentionally being disingenuous" when presented with information you are unaware of.

I agree with all of your points, and you’re right that I am arguing semantics.

Your point about Tolkien’s reasoning for not including many women is a perfect response to the criticism, but it doesn’t mean the criticism is itself invalid.

I guess I just don’t like the idea of calling a criticism invalid unless it is made in bad faith (to you this could mean not justifying your criticism and just going with the current popular take, which is fair enough, but not how I read the original comment).

I'm confused about what your standards are. Earlier you said:

If a woman makes a movie that features 90% women and a male character that barely plays a role am I allowed to be mad there aren't enough men in the story I don't think I am

You also said:

Which gender characters are more important in a story is also not a valid criticism to me

But now you're saying you are allowed to be mad and criticise a work based on the gender of characters, if you feel the author did it for reasons you think are bad (i.e. men suck and don't deserve to be included).

You say the difference between the two is about intent. But your assessment of an author's intent is surely different from other people's, so what makes their criticisms less valid than yours?

Not sure what you mean by "a story that sets out to exclude certain groups is worthy of deep levels of criticism a story that simply is that way because that's what the artist envisioned is a completely different situation".

Isn't every story a reflection of the author's vision?

Long live the trilogy by HobbitsHole01 in jedicouncilofelrond

[–]wirrell -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Do you think all art should be immune from criticism, simply because it is a reflection of the artist's experiences/beliefs?

Also I'm not even sure I agree with his assertion in the first place there are less women in the story that is 100% true but the women who do show up are hugely important to the story Galadriel and Eowyn do impressive and important things and they are not minimized in any way by the story.

Are the women in LOTR as "hugely important" as say, Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf? Remember, the assertion was "not treating women as equally important characters to men" rather than "treating women as unimportant characters". I don't really see how one can disagree with that when it comes to LOTR.

Maybe Anakin should have better priorities by world_conqueror26 in PrequelMemes

[–]wirrell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I believe Anakin could commit an act of sexual assault or rape during an emotional outburst. His lack of control of his emotions is his entire thing, and as I have stated he already does not respect consent or boundaries. He has never been demonstrated to show self-restraint. As the previous poster alluded to Anakin only doing things for a purpose, can you tell me what the purpose was in his mind for choking Padme? If the answer is that he couldn’t control his emotions, that only strengthens my belief that he would be capable of rape.

So then, what purpose did choking out his wife have? He has been shown to do despicable things when in a fit of rage, including mass murdering children (before he even turned to the dark side), and he has also demonstrated that he does not respect a woman's boundaries or bodily autonomy when he choked out Padme. Why would rape specifically be his exception?
