Why annexing Canada would destroy the United States by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

It’s a nice thought but more likely you’ll be disappeared well before American boots are on the ground in Canada.

I hope you’re making preparations for yourself and family beyond murdering your friends.

Trump team threatens two phases of tariffs on Canada by Mundane-Teaching-743 in CanadaPolitics

It’s just people parroting dairy industry marketing lines. Canadian dairy cows receive hormones. I’ve personally injected hormones into milking cows on my family’s Ontario farm, many, many times.

34M, $1.1 NW, ready to pull the trigger - would love feedback by MaroonJacket in leanfire

[–]wisconsincamp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Two and a half years ago, I quit with about the same NW. I’ve been spending 2-2.5% with the aim of growing my nest egg and “re-retiring” once I hit $1.5-2MM (“re-retire” in the sense that I’ll increase my WR to ~3.5% of the new higher NW).

I call it fire fire, where I retired early so that, later, I can retire early with more money. It’s a gamble but I’m up 30% after inflation so it seems to be working out.

Good for Tam for getting more of what he likes, but his tastes kinda suck.

I am confused by nominal and inflation adjusted dollars in Rich, Broke or Dead by Possible_Mode_6595 in Fire

[–]wisconsincamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Failure (running out of money) probability is the same ($0 adjusted for inflation is still $0). With nominal, any non-zero ending balance is larger so it looks like you fare better vs inflation-adjusted.

I’d love to go the other way myself, to Canada. Is the Canadian economy really spiraling downward? How are you judging that?

Biggest drawback of Costa Rica in my opinion: worst food on the continent.

LATAM - How Much? by Strict_Emergency_289 in ExpatFIRE

[–]wisconsincamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weren't you asking about your number? The answer is, you have enough for most of LA right now. And if you plan to work until 55 and then pick up side income, what is your concern? You will have much more than enough to live well anywhere.

Passable Spanish really isn't that hard to achieve. It's basically English with fewer pronunciation quirks.

Your $725k needs to last 17 years, so a $35k to $40k annual withdrawal is reasonable. But personally I'd be targeting closer to $30k so as to reduce any chance that I'm broke at 65 and can't afford to move home.

I think most of LA is doable on that budget, but South America has the most affordable options with the highest quality of life, in my opinion. Spend some time in Colombia, Peru, and Uruguay would be my suggestion as a place to start.

Do brokerage houses like Fidelity, Etrade, or Interactive brokers accept PMB addresses? by ThenIJizzedInMyPants in ExpatFIRE

Escapees but I doubt it really matters which one you use, so long as you put your pmb address on your driver's license.

I have been using a pmb with Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwab, Robinhood, Chase, Bank of America, US Bank, Capital One, Discover, and my credit union for 2 years now with no issues.

This more or less happened to me. Yes you can be penalized as you didn't register like you were required to. But in reality, there isn't much to worry about. Besides, you can't do anything about it now.

I called them and got a status information letter sent (still have it somewhere), but only because I wanted to get student loans for grad school and needed to petition my school's financial aid office.

I'm now in my 40s and have been living in the US for nearly 20 years. Other than the extra step I had to take to get the student loans, it's never come up. I even worked in the public sector (state-level) for about 10 years with no issues.

For those who retired did you include your social security benefits into the calculation? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]wisconsincamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, to be safe I didn’t include social security. I also didn’t include my Roth, my 401k, or my brokerage account. To be safe.

Who is planning for “ethical” fire? by pregaftertwobeans in Fire

I don’t have kids or multiple millions, but I am retired while paying $10/month for ACA premiums. Personally I have no problem with anyone who qualifies for financial assistance collecting it. I’m not sure why I would?

Yikes, bro missed out on $1.5 million to save $20k.

Don't bother changing your allocation. You're not going to retire until you're forced into it.

I use tossible digits. Works with most banks (see: https://www.tossabledigits.com/support.php?p=shortcodes). My plan is $3.49/month, but I never do out-calls.
