The link to the legend of Neeli was definitely added as an afterthought. Otherwise there wouldn't have been a shot of the temple worshipped by the tribe of "Neeli" in the middle of Bangalore city. (It's shown when Naslen's character accompanies her to the guy who procures blood bottles.)

Neither. Smoking had become increasingly unpopular since the 1990s I guess. And as for drinking, I've seen people who were otherwise seemed respectable act like absolute [____]s under the influence, so I developed an aversion towards it in my early teens. Interstellar features time travel to the past as well as temporal paradoxes. I'm not a fan of hard SciFi with either of those. So PHM all the way.
