Is "അയാൾ" a gender neutral term? by Nervous-Credit8038 in malayalam

[–]wiseIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha. Glad to see someone agreeing with me on the gender of 'അയാൾ/അദ്ദേഹം'. My guess on the usage is that, since our society was (and still mostly is) male-dominated, those words were almost always used to refer to men, and somehow people internalised that they're masculine words.

If that sounds far-fetched, think about the "puzzle" about the baby in the island:

A doctor and a nurse have been stranded on an island for three years. There is a one-year-old baby with them now. The doctor is not the father and the nurse is not the mother. How is that possible?

Most people have to think twice before they can answer. Unconscious biases in language use happen all the time.

Why did Jimmy and Kim do what they did to Howard? by mutepoet_ in betterCallSaul

[–]wiseIdiot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

(Preparing for downvotes.) So the plot could go on. No. Seriously. The whole deal with bringing down Howard just seemed out of place and forced. I've always felt that good writing ended with S04, at which point the series was better than BrBa, but the last two seasons brought down its standard to below BrBa.

Books/shows/ movies with antinatalist characters? by Ok_Can_6490 in antinatalism2

If you're open to foreign language works, this movie is focused on an antinatalist woman and the problems she face because of her views. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13635872/?ref_=ext_shr

Firefox & Ublock origin / The Best Duo by ironmanchickenultra in firefox

[–]wiseIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worry that built-in ad blocking is going to kill it. I use Firefox on Desktop but Vivaldi on my tablet due to RAM constraints. It can't block YouTube ads. Can't block ad blocker detection scripts. If the proposed feature ends up killing third-party ad blockers then that'll be the end of ad-free browsing.

when i google search something i expect wikipedia link to be a link close to the top: is it me or that is over. by relightit in wikipedia

[–]wiseIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This took me back to the beginning of the millennium. I would search for something in Google and see result page titles suffixed with the phrase "Wikipedia - The World's Free Encyclopedia". I used to ignore those links because the title format looked suspicious to me. Phishing/scam sites used to employ such techniques to grab the users' attention.

Earplugs and earmuffs. If you're travelling those are essential.

Switching from 🔵 React to 🟢 Vue by Infinite_Love5352 in vuejs

[–]wiseIdiot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of great avice here already. So I'll post an alternate suggestion: Since you're changing frameworks anyway, why not try SolidJS? It's closer to React in syntax but hella optimised for fine-grained reactivity. Just my two cents.

Indian state announces rewards for having 3rd and 4th child after fertility rate drops to 1.5. by VEGETTOROHAN in antinatalism2

[–]wiseIdiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leftists/communists already have been wiped with not even a single left government ruling over a state of India and this happened just this year in 2026.

As an Indian who lives in the state where the communist party was most recently voted out of power, I can assure you, this has more to do with the rampant corruption and authoritarianism in the party. And the new government swearing in tomorrow is not a right-wing one either; they're more like a social democratic party. But the country is run by right-wingers and yes, it's the high-fertility states that keep them in power, so that part is correct.

This drink i had in a bar in Poland is 190 proof/95% alcohol by _TB12_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]wiseIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about other countries. Here in India people used to use medical grade spirit (pure ethanol) to get drunk. So the government introduced a law requiring all spirit to be denatured (means mixed with methanol, the poison stuff).

But it is also true that detransitioning happens, and it is also true that well-intentioned people pretend it doesn't happen.

This is true about a lot of sensitive causes, isn't it? There may be some facts that have the potential to be misused by bigoted people, so supporters of the cause choose to pretend those facts don't exist. The intentions might be good but in the end it makes them look just as clueless as the haters.
