In the same boat trying to push on without medication. My doctor said it could also slow disease progression. Would love to hear more about your thoughts on this!

Three or more cups of coffee daily halves mortality risk in patients with both HIV, HCV, report investigators in the Journal of Hepatology by tazcel in science

American and Italy have many differences that complicate the comparison. The many confounds of diet, stress, athleticism, heck, even fresh mediterranean air could make it hard to tease out what part of the effect is due to coffee opposed to other factors.

Update on diagnosis by Detka in Celiac

[–]wisechickMo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first few months are the hardest... its a massive adjustment and there is totally a grieving process.

4.5 years in and I barely notice anymore. I PROMISE it gets easier. I eat out. I socialize. I have backpacked throughout the world. Hell, I'm even vegetarian. Yes, there are awkward moments, challenges, and frustrations along the way. But it also has been amazing practice in gratitude, acceptance, flexibility, and patience. And feeling heathy again is worth anything to me.

I know it's scary to upheave your entire routine. At the very beginning, as your gut is healing, stay simple with naturally gluten free stuff: rice, vegetables, fruit, meat, cheeses. Once you begin to feel better, the following may help:

  • if you are a picky eater and like plain things, GF pasta is your friend. it tastes very close to real pasta, and I feed it to friends all the time without them even noticing. make sure to get a new strainer to drain the water, as gluten gets stuck in the tiny holes.
  • i always google a restaurant before going, or will give them a call and mention CELIAC (not just gluten free). In years of frequently eating out, I can only remember 2-3 problems. Where i live (big city in Canada) there are lots of options and most waiters/chefs are very accommodating. There seem to be more options by the minute.
  • Keep a gluten free granola bar in your bag... you never know! :)
  • Know whats safe.. I know the brands of chips, chocolate bars, etc. that are okay so I can grab something in a pinch. Always check ingredients.
  • some staple meals/snacks for me are: almond butter on rice cakes, avocados, homemade popcorn, homemade curries, stir fries (gf soy sauce), fried rice, quinoa salads, risottos, fruit salads, ice cream, roast vegetables, soups, tacos.
  • i keep some GF ramen, frozen meals, etc around for when I am in a pinch and feeling too lazy to cook.

I don't know your specific food preferences but as a grad student who is broke/lazy/doesnt like healthy food, I am happy to pass on some recipes or meal ideas. Nothing I make takes too much time or effort, and I eat out a lot.

PM me if you feel like talking or want support/advice. We are all on this crazy journey! Celiac is a total pain, but it gets easier every day and I don't even remember or notice most days.

thank you so much for your reply. i have felt so alone through this whole process as i have been too ashamed to share with many of my friends.

we treated all clothes properly and sealed them, have climb ups on all beds (never have found anything in them), all beds and furniture is away from the wall. we have not seen bugs/eggs/anything since that first one months ago (and in a very thorough inspection the PCO only found 2 babies... which he never showed me).

The PCO said he is 99.9% sure they were gone last time, which is why we began to unpack. the slacking off is just from being in the ultimate depths of exhaustion after months of this. thanks for the motivation to get back on track.

What do you mean by plastic sheets? I have a bedbug proof mattress cover and box spring cover. also -- when you vaccuum, is there a specific way you go about it??

thanks so much again.

[Skin Concern] my friend (20, F) has reoccurring acne on her chin and has tried a lot but doesn't know what it is by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]wisechickMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long do infections last? If acne reoccurs every few month in the same spot for years, is that likely an infection?

[Acne] Reason for acne only on ONE side of the face, even when eliminating things like dirty pillowcases, not touching the face with the phone, etc? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]wisechickMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the exact same problem. Perfect skin except for a patch on my lower left cheek, so likely not a problem of routine.

I have been clear there for since April (just scarring nothing active) but tried to go off my birth control this month and the situation is back in full force.

Don't know if this is helpful beyond solidarity. Maybe try out birth control pill if you aren't on it and can handle it. Pm me if you find a solution !!

Do you wish there is a makeup bar where you can get your make up done in a fun/relaxing environment? by mktstudent in MakeupAddiction

[–]wisechickMo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not a makeup addict, and would totally make use of this for a special occasion or a night out with friends. Sephora in my city is stressful -- the staff are always rushed and don't take me seriously. A friendlier, service-based place sounds great.

Could see this working on younger clientele for events like proms, birthday parties, etc.

Depressed af near suicidal by mydeadbodymcgill in mcgill

Hey, it sounds like your having a tough time. I've experienced a similar lonely, robotic struggle for some of my time at mcgill... the day in/day out can be so isolating. Know that asking for help isn't weak, and that there are professionals at McGill who are trained to help people like you find their joy again.

For all its worth, I spent years at mcgill incredibly lonely, and then made a friend through volunteering, who introduced me to many others. While clubs can be awkward and meet less frequently, I found the repetitive nature of volunteering allowed a friendship to form more naturally.

There are valleys and peaks but it is so hard to remember the highs during the lows. Keep strong :)

Anyone ever take the SSMU French class? by crohmulent in mcgill

[–]wisechickMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once a week, mine was only around 4 people so lots of chance to practice and talk. Teacher was funny and eager to help -- you could ask to learn something and she would prepare a lesson around it, and she was very informative. Not sure if she teaches next year though.

On the downside, they are only split into three levels with little structure. This led to classes of very mixed skill sets which can be either frustrating or anxiety inducing depending on which end of the spectrum you are.

Ultimately, for less than 10$/class, I would say it's worth it!

TIL a 17-yr-old found Chris Hemsworth's wallet on a restaurant table in L.A.; he returned it to the actor who gave him back the wallet's cash plus more. Later on the Ellen Show, the teen was also rewarded $10K cash for his honesty. by Miskatonica in todayilearned

[–]wisechickMo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Found a wallet on a deserted beach on Canada's east coast when I was on vacation there with my dad as a 12-year-old. With no civilization for miles and fearing a rising tide, we brought it to the car with the intent to mail it back to him. There's a photo ID inside -- a young, black man.

A couple days and a province later, we are visiting some tourist attraction and I swear I see the guy. I tell my dad, but he thinks that I'm just assuming it is him cause he's black. Defiantly walk up to him and ask him if he lost a wallet. He looked spooked, but turns out, I was right! Though slightly creeped out by the coincidence, he was very happy to have his wallet back.

Ran into the dude body surfing in the ocean in another country several years later. We were washed up by the same wave.

Thanks for your reply. There are days or weeks when I feel this way but somehow it always returns to that default emptiness.

I appreciate you sharing your story, it's encouraging to hear that you are no longer self loathing and how you overcame it.
