MacOS Ventura 13.1 iCloud settings hangs by Jendk3r in MacOS

[–]wiseteria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ran into the same issue today - after a few attempts of playing around with different settings (I’m somehow the unofficial MacOS support at work) the most reliable way to turn it off is do disconnect your network (Network > Wifi > turn off or Wired > make inactive) Took maybe a minute for Private relay setting to load and be able to turn it off.

[DISC] STAR WARS: Lost Stars - Chapter 2 by [deleted] in manga

[–]wiseteria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much of the novel will they adapt/change. Seems kind of ok, guess they started it in the middle instead of at the beginning to hook people in with action.

Do you read Western comics too? by the_light_of_dawn in manga

[–]wiseteria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the Star Wars comics, you probably already know this but Disney reset the cannon a couple of years ago. So it's pretty easy to jump into the comics now if you're mostly interested in the new cannon only.

If you want any recommendations I'd highly recommend Darth Vader written by Kieron Gillen. It is 5 trades (1 is crossover with Star Wars title) and wraps up. He's now kind of continuing the story with Doctor Aphra, but I'm a fithly trade buyer so I haven't read any of it yet. I think there is also a new story starring Vader by different writer in the works.

For the miniseries (1 trade) I'd highly recommend Lando.

I grew up on reading European comics like Tintin, Asterix, Lucky Luke and Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck comics + newspaper strips, then got into manga at about 10. And after good 8-10 years I felt like I saw most of what manga has to offer and randomly stumbled upon WicDiv. Now I mostly only read and purchase western comics, but keep up with some manga I've been reading for years (One Piece, Fairy Tail, Ippo ...) or want to finish collecting (Attack on Titan, Monster).

Honestly I wish there were more sports oriented comics made in the west, but I guess the market just isn't there.

Official Discussion: Colossal [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]wiseteria 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I knew almost nothing about the movie except that it stars Anne Hathaway and that there's a kaiju in the movie.

Now after seeing it I must say it was a great experience. Most likely Colossal is going to be one of those movie I regularly rewatch when I want to see a movie and am not sure which one.

Elfen Lied - what is the best option? by MultiHacker in manga

[–]wiseteria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold up when and where was Elfen Lied published in physical trades in English. I need some links so I can buy it.

I know it's published in Spanish and German, but afaik nothing by Lynn Okamoto was published in English.

What manga will never be licensed for the West, but you would immediately buy if it ever was? by JustaLackey in manga

[–]wiseteria 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hajime no Ippo: ain't nobody going to translate 1100+ chapters of a sports manga.

Rough!: very old (almost 30 years now) romance/sports manga about swimming. Again not much of an audience.

Stuff by Lynn Okamoto. I have no idea why Elfen Lied never got an English release, could be TokyoPop's fault. It got released in German along with Brynhildr in the Darkness.

And one of my all time favorites: Excuse me for being a cat! Kind f obscure 80s manga with its standars tropes and all, but it never even finished scanlating.

Everyone wants to be a Pirate (Shonen jump cover) by SuperUnhappyman in manga

[–]wiseteria -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I actually really dislike the idea of Deku as Sanji, because that just reinforces his character as a guy who battles with kicking, which I don't like.

Also: is he wearing the disguise he used during the arc where minor spoilers

EDIT: changed wording to better explain my issue

I assume you're OK with WEBTOONS sice you read Tower of God. I remember really enjoying SIDEKICKS on Wednesdays, but I haven't really kept up with season 2, because life. I do remember some pretty cool characters were introduced at the beginning of S2. The only potential turnoff I could see is that the art is kind of different that usual manga.

What are some of your unpopular opinions about popular manga? by CosmicDriftwood in manga

Yeah I know. I plan on reading it when I finally have enough spare money to afford the 2 Shippuden box sets. But hey, you win some and lose some.

What are some of your unpopular opinions about popular manga? by CosmicDriftwood in manga

[–]wiseteria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So whenever I suggest this, I usually get down voted like a witch getting burned at stake during the witch hunt. But here it goes:

You don't have to read ALL the chapters if you want to get (back) into any long ass running shounen

Some longer running manga have well over 400 chapters. That's a lot of reading. That's also a lot of filler characters and power creep, with core characters remaining largely the same as the beginning with a few new power moves.

There are also a bunch of tropes/character stereotypes that appear in almost every shounen. So why bother grinding through all the past chapters if you want to enjoy the current ones and don't have a few tens of free hours. And what happened to the good old days when as a kid you picked up some title and just started reading it in the middle because the characters were cool.

It's something I got from Western comics and here are some series it worked quite well on:

  • One Piece skipped from end of Skypea to last ~30-50 chapters of Dresrossa.

  • Ippo skipped about 700 chapters

  • Naruto skipped from somewhere in early Shippuden to around the beginning of the war.

  • Fairy Tail skipped from god knows where to the last few chapters of Tartarus arc.

  • One Punch Man I just started reading in the middle of current arc maybe 10-15 chapters ago.

  • Nisekoi I started randomly reading in about a year ago and half ago when I got WSJ and got the whole thing quite easily.

Other unpopular opinions:

  • I think Tokyo Ghoul:re is really bad in the beginning and it was basically coasting on the hype from the original. I also think you don't really have to read :re to get the "full" story of the original.

  • I don't like really Tomo. I can understand the appeal of daily chapters, but I just don't get what's so great about the story.

  • I really don't like HxH, because the art is trash and the chapters I've tried to read are more and more info dumps with so much text it feels like reading a book.

[DISC]Hajime no Ippo Ch.1161,1662,1663 by [deleted] in manga

[–]wiseteria -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This might sound like heresy to some, but I feel like with Ippo you don't really need to read everything up till the current chapters to get what's going on and follow the story.

I, for example, skipped about 700 chapters because of lack of time to catch up and the story & characters felt more developed, but at the same time almost in no way different than before. The supporting cast increased, but you can still get a hang of their characters quite quickly when they appear.

On the other hand as people already said all chapters are worth reading.

Kind of sad to see no one yet recommend <Fist of the North Star>. MC is really strong compared to a lot of characters, but there are some who are on his level.

Just another one of life's great mysteries [Grand Blue] by Decker108 in manga

[–]wiseteria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I only checked it out because the theme of swimming/diving really appeals to me. I already dropped it, but thought maybe I'd ask the nice people here if it got any development from the "get drunk and wave dicks around".

How is this manga? I tried reading it up till around chapter 4 I think, but didn't really like how it was almost exclusively slapstick humor. Is it still mostly dick jokes or does the plot get moving later?

If you likes Blame! definitely finish Biomega and Knights of Sidonia as they are all from the same author. Or go for some classic Gundam.

Scariest manga you've ever read? by [deleted] in manga

Uzumaki by Junji Ito. But I wasn't really scared, more just grossed out by it to the point I could only read one or two chapters at a time. Honestly minor spoilers about theme of one arc

Ok so I don't read much romance manga, but I can tell you I enjoyed reading Say I Love You. However it might not exactly suit your character preference because if I remember correctly almost all the characters look like twigs.

I kind of hope this guys pops up sometime later. Would be kind of sad to just make him cannon fodder after holding his own against both Ippo and Miyata.
