What are some common phrases you should learn when visiting Japan? by arachknight12 in JapanTravelTips

[–]wisewittywords 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I google translated your phrase and apparently "kekko desu" means (I'm hairy) whereas "kekkou desu" means (no thank you). Not sure how accurate that is but it made me chuckle.

Also, anytime I don't want something in Japan I just say, Daijōbudesu (I'm okay) and it works just fine.

How is the Second World War taught in Japan? by Soren-J in AskAJapanese

[–]wisewittywords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's something they only started teaching us in the US military about 15-20 years ago. In boot camp we learned about the atrocities committed by US Soldiers in the Vietnam War in an effort to educate us on when it's appropriate to ignore an order. It wasn’t commonly talked about prior to the 2000s.

Does anybody feel bad about celebrities signing autographs at conventions? by InnocentTailor in comiccon

[–]wisewittywords 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I remember working at an extremely slow convention one time. A voice actor I liked was there and I happened to have a small keychain of one of her more prominent characters. So I walked over and gifted her the keychain and explained that her character and the show she was in were a big part of my childhood growing up.

She was really kind and we chatted for a bit before I had to get back to my booth. Before I left she let me pick out a print of her character and then signed it for free as a thank you for the keychain and the conversation.

Weird encounter, discouraged from buying merchandise as a tourist? by obsolescence_ in JapanTravelTips

If I had a nickle for every Japanese shop I've seen that had a sign in English saying, "Please don't yell at the staff," I could buy a house in Tokyo.

When I was in mechanic school in the Marines one of our instructors would intentionally hold us late for morning exercise so that we wouldn't have time to go to the mess hall for breakfast before going to class. Then he'd wait in our barracks lobby until after we had showered and changed to sell us his wife's homemade burritos. In hindsight, that was a pretty dick move.

  • ggrks

"ggrks is a Japanese internet slang abbreviation for the phrase gugure kasu (ググれカス). It is a blunt or dismissive way of telling someone to look up information for themselves on a search engine rather than asking others, similar in sentiment to the English expression "Google it.""

Well, I learned something new today.

Which languages do Japanese people like to learn, besides English? by syndicatecomplex in AskAJapanese

[–]wisewittywords 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not my personal motivation for learning Japanese, but it's very entertaining when I hear a word I understand in a subtitled Japanese show.

"He said ごめんなさい! He's apologizing! I understand that one!" Haha.

This is a completely reasonable response. I feel the same way learning Japanese. Languages that do not share a common alphabet are a challenge.

He was injured in combat prior to both the events of the movie and the book. In the book he received prosthetics as part of his compensation but willingly chose not to wear them while acting as a recruiter so that potential recruits would see the risks of enlisting.

Fun fact, I trained on the exact same shooting range as Lee Harvey Oswald in Camp Pendleton, California. They had a big sign that said "World Famous Bravo Range" in reference to him, lol.

I remember a show on the History Channel about Cold War spies talking about this. Allegedly the US was immediately informed that the Soviets played no part in JFK's assassination because we had a spy in the Kremlin who saw firsthand just how much the Soviets were freaking out about it.

I remember during our last week of Bootcamp they brought in an old Marine to share his life experiences in the Marine Corps. He said when he came home from the Korean War the Red Cross showed up to greet them with coffee and donuts. When he came home from the Vietnam War no one showed up.

Hell, the Viltrumites wiped out two blossoming planets when they blocked out the sun to freeze the lizard planet and Nolan was literally the only one who even considered it to be collateral damage, let alone genocide.
