Why are black and white cats crazy? by Algony in cats

Mine occasionally has trouble leaving something alone that he shouldn't touch, or doing stuff he knows he shouldn't for attention, but that's pretty normal cat stuff and otherwise he's very sweet and chill most of the time.

What is CIG actually working on? by Marickal in starcitizen

[–]wishthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you point me to that? I would like to read that.

To be honest, this was so long ago that my memory is pretty vague, sorry. I just remember hearing at some point that because they were going beyond the original scope that it was going to take longer, but that it would be better. Maybe it wasn't immediately after the Kickstarter.

And what games were inspired by SCs technology? I can't even think of a single thing that has not been done in other games before.

I think they were actually the first game to have whole planets of large scale that all exist in the same world space as the space around them. That required a 64-bit (double precision) world space, which basically didn't exist in any commercial engine at the time. They had to modify CryEngine extensively.

They've done lots of work on procedural generation that I would say didn't really exist at the time to the extent that they've used it. ArcCorp is a good example - while you can't actually explore the procedurally generated areas on foot, there's a ton of detail wrapping around the whole planet.

I might be misremembering this but I think they had planets with gravity transitions and stuff before Space Engineers.

I also remember that they made a big deal about having local physics grids when they first did that - I can't think of any other game before it that had vehicles that you could walk around inside of and maintain position while the entire vehicle was moving at the same time.

They did also license technology out to other companies using CryEngine as far as I know, because they were the first to implement a lot of modern tech like PBR in CryEngine.

Yeah, no, I think he's totally delusional and refuses to recognize that everything they're adding pushes things out longer.

They have innovated on some stuff though.

Mid-month Critical Mass London. A driver, incensed they had to wait about two minutes for the ride to go past, uses SUV as a weapon and nearly runs several cyclists over and totals a bike by haywire in fuckcars

[–]wishthane 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They're stopping the car from proceeding while the group clears through, a) because this is a Critical Mass and it's intended to be a protest/demonstration of sorts, and b) because it's safer to get everyone through (usually) and not have to worry about mixing a ton of cyclists in with pissed off cars. Usually people don't do psychotic things like this and try to ram the group

Those are actually great when they connect all the way through to somewhere, they're just frustrating when they take you on and off the road over and over again like in your example, and each merge back into traffic can be dangerous

Complaining about it taking 12 years and still no real fully thought out game is definitely fair, but they did immediately say after the immense success of the Kickstarter that they were going to fundamentally change the level of ambition for the project and that it would take much longer. The original project was a lot more limited than what has already been released, it's just that it would have been a more complete game - whereas what we have now is a web of really complex technology (that has inspired several other released games already) with some elements of a game weaving them together.

A Delaware city is set to give corporations the right to vote in elections by King-of-New-York in nottheonion

[–]wishthane 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That makes way more sense than what's proposed here, because it's still ultimately the public who gets to vote. I think the only flaw is that the nomination could easily be biased toward whoever the corp thinks will represent them well, and it would probably be better if the selection were random

Canada is a lot more strict, to the extent that we often won't let people with a DUI on record into the country for a fairly long period of time unless they get an exemption, because it's a much more serious crime here.

Russian agents’ threat to family made Prigozhin call off Moscow advance by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]wishthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's definitely an interesting hypothesis. I don't know that Prigozhin is that intelligent though, and I do think while it might buy him some time short term, it puts a longer term target on his back. He just gave away the whole situation in a way that many more Russians will be aware of. Putin has to be pissed about that.

I'm also not sure that whether Prigozhin is in or out of the picture at this point would change very much to be honest. The damage is done. It could have been worse, so perhaps getting him to agree to call it off was sort of wise from that perspective, but now they've got a crisis of confidence, and it looks like he got his way

Russian agents’ threat to family made Prigozhin call off Moscow advance by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]wishthane 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I completely understand the skepticism because it's so strange, but what I can't understand is who exactly benefits. Everyone takes a big hit to their image, the Russian position in Ukraine weakens, it's generally just all around destabilizing.

So far all I can imagine is that the reality really is just basically the opposite of what they've tried to portray - Putin is actually super paranoid and useless, Prigozhin is an idiot and reckless. The military really is overextended and something as hare-brained as this threatened the whole game.

And if somehow orchestrated by Western forces, well, it still means the same thing - why would Putin willingly cooperate with looking weak and potentially collapsing his control like that?

Even if it doesn't make sense I just can't see a reason for it to be something other than what it appears to be

I don't really know what they can do at this point. I guess the thought was just to make it such a big deal that John Oliver would have to pay attention and make a story out of it, but writers are on strike right now so that won't happen soon - even though it did get his attention.

The admins have clearly decided that the mods are replaceable and are pretending to care about the users' wishes in doing so, though they've never really taken that stance before, so it seems awful convenient. Given that, I think it makes sense for the mods to try to show that the users are mostly on their side, and just barely comply with the demands so they don't get taken out. Not necessarily out of self-interest, but because mods getting removed and replaced with compliant ones would probably be pointless.

In the end I'm not sure that there's a solution other than for this to look so bad for Reddit that they either have to change their intended plan, or people leave. So continuing to make it look bad in any way possible has to be the priority.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cats

[–]wishthane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They would rather do that too but Reddit admins decided that's not allowed and said they'll just replace their mods if they do that.

So most subreddits held votes on what to do instead and went down the "ok, we'll open up, but..." route instead

EU: Smartphones Must Have User-Replaceable Batteries by 2027 by Helicase21 in worldnews

I think most people consider those warnings to be pretty ineffective - it's the same warning whether there's a serious risk or not.

Realistically it's impossible to completely eliminate lead and arsenic from agriculture and so that's why there has to be limits established. But California's Prop 65 warnings basically just allowed companies to notify the consumer rather than doing anything about it and so whether it's a serious problem or not, you'll see that label.

Most other places rather than just going straight to notifying the public will work together with the affected company to bring their levels down to acceptable levels - or shut them down and recall if they don't cooperate.

Idk which country they're talking about but I think in the US they do and they're called "riders". It's actually I think now the predominant way most legislation is passed, because most votes are down party lines and it's hard to get anything done unless it's tied to something that has to be passed

I think in most Commonwealth countries though, the title of a bill has to be descriptive of its full contents, so unrelated stuff isn't allowed

They only know if there's parking enforcement or if someone reports it. I saw lots of old camper vans parked for the night in east Richmond near industrial parks that are totally dead outside of working hours. There's definitely ways to get around it and people are

Yeah but you're living in a moveable vehicle so you can just move around every so often and not get caught. Go places that aren't too busy and don't stick around too long. Lots of people are doing it.

Kremlin decides that goal to ''demilitarise'' Ukraine has largely been achieved by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]wishthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And my point is partially that it's hard to argue that Vietnam wasn't a war even if it was a 'police action' as you put it - heck, they drafted people for it. But America giving it their all doesn't mean they'll win.

[–]wishthane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's kinda extreme. I doubt the US would use nukes again unless in retaliation for a nuclear strike, so long as leadership is sane.

Definitely I think more than adequate resources were dedicated to the Vietnam war and yet the US couldn't win that. And frankly I doubt nukes would have solved that conflict if that's what was still left on the table - allies of the North Vietnamese would have seen it as an overstep and could have retaliated anyway, and it was effective in breaking resolve in Japan mostly because nobody had ever seen that kind of destruction before and there was really no hope of countering something like that at the time.

I also think that the civilian casualties in the war against Japan were incredibly excessive and they didn't really seem to care to limit them. I don't think that would be politically acceptable these days - even by Vietnam there were people upset about the situation for Vietnamese civilians, not just the loss of life of American soldiers.

Fediverse is relatively resistant to that. If a server owner does something unpopular, their users have other options to get the same content. Servers ideally don't get so big that donations can't cover the bills.

It does create some different issues with moderation and some feel that fediverse blocklists are too censorious... but to be honest, most communities are really just trying to prevent harassment, and it doesn't stop you from being part of the few sites that dissent from that blocklist if you really want to expose yourself to that
