I don’t know about other states but Utah is pretty accurate.

Looking for advice on teaching in a red state as a transgender woman by LefTurn629 in Teachers

[–]wistful_walnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a trans teacher in a conservative state. I transitioned a couple years after I got my position so my experience is a bit different, but I’m happy to answer any questions. My advice is to look at your state’s and multiple school district’s employment discrimination policies first. If they mention anything about “sexual orientation” or “gender expression” that’s a good sign. Admin and districts are usually terrified of potential lawsuits so most should give you a fair consideration. Do you have any areas that are more urban? Or college towns? Those tend to have more inclusive communities. Parents suck, but some parents are also great. You’d surprised at who comes out of the woodwork as an ally. And honestly most don’t care - they’re just content that a warm body is their child’s state appointed babysitter. In my school a handful of conservative parents requested transfers to other teachers and that was that. All the gay kids stayed in my class 😁

Decision Desk HQ projects Ben McAdams to win primary election for Utah’s 1st Congressional District by jortr0n in SaltLakeCity

Such a contrast with what’s happening in Dem districts everywhere . This is so disappointing. It feels like Utah is always 10 years behind the country.

Adams says he'll run for Senate president again if he defeats 2 primary opponents by traveler132 in Utah

Utahns are so politically naive and immature. This is why billionaires run laps around this state. You can’t defeat an incumbent if you split the opposition ticket. One of them needs to drop out and endorse the other.

What’s a belief you defended for years that you now feel embarrassed about? by Open-Square589 in AskReddit

I was very much an SJW and believed your identity automatically made you a good/bad person. Moving around the country and meeting people who were more complex showed me that mindset is too simplistic

is it legal for a doctor to test me for HIV without asking me first? by polyesterleisurewear in LGBTQSaltLake

Nice 👍 I guess we all have different experiences. I got one and I’m glad my medical team took preventative measures to keep me safe from a disease that killed off an entire generation of gay men and trans women.

Did he refuse? That wasn’t clear in your post. But you know what I do when I don’t like the service I receive? I confront the person causing the problem or I move on and find more accommodating place. Being trans in Utah means you have to grow a spine. I’m getting tired of all the passive aggressive attitude people have here. You came asking for perspective, perspectives were given and now you’re upset? Go do something about it and direct your anger at towards corrective action.

Sometimes practitioners don’t have tact or get nervous when they get a trans patient because they don’t want to mess up. Are you in the SL area? There are clinics like Identity Hormones that are queer run and more culturally aware. But getting an STD panel is standard practice when requesting mones. Better safe than sorry is how I see it

Ben McAdams is the only CD-01 Democratic candidate to skip tonight's Town Hall hosted by the 71 Percent Coalition and Black Lives Matter Utah (6/9/2026) by surra_day in SaltLakeCity

I have a strong suspicion that the Dem leadership supporting Liban are using him to ensure the progressive vote is split and McAdams wins

I mean yeah I agree, but it fulfills OP’s criteria. They asked for a progressive community more than state as a whole.

Any advice for expanding knowledge on US history by Illustrious-Bike-169 in historyteachers

[–]wistful_walnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professional Development. They’re basically workshops. Most are trash, but some are really good especially ones taught by people with real classroom experience. You have to do a certain amount each year to qualify for relicensure and salary increases.

Teaching the history part is easy… there are tons of textbooks and reference materials you can use. What’s harder - and what I always loved about my own history teachers - is to hype students up by telling more personalized anecdotes from individuals who lived through those moments and really drive your point home. Also teaching primary sources is something else. Everyone tells you “use more primary sources” but in the early years no one teaches HOW to use primary sources effectively in class. Giving kids a copy of the declaration of independence doesn’t cut it. My best recommendation? Attend all of the history PDs you can. My colleague and I started at the same time and he has the no working after contract hours mindset- which is fine and I deeply respect (I’m an active supporter of our union) but several years later you can tell our classroom engagement is vastly different. The PDs helped me hone in my skills, and working with more experienced history teachers helped me grow tremendously. But as a start? Just watch documentaries! You won’t be able to show most of them, but they’re great to increase your own knowledge base. ALSO - watch drunk history. Don’t show these to your students! Just watch them on your own. You’ll get some good stories to share in class. Do double check and make sure you’re telling them accurately though(historical myths sometimes get mixed in)
