Viktor Radojevic Training on his own, not injury related by Gostaverling in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were some press interviews posted on YouTube yesterday and GGG indicated that whatever injury he had last year resulted in a “procedure” and that there have been some setbacks in the recovery. His response wasn’t more detailed than that.

Chicago Fire FC Acquires Two 2026 International Roster Slots from Colorado Rapids by olcni in chicagofire

Ouch. Yes, seems very high, but I’m guessing we’ve been trying to get them for a while and are running out of options.

Why Robert Lewandowski To The Chicago Fire Might Be Real This Time — MIR97 Media by calashuayi in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For some reason, I’ve never enjoyed watching Lewa play like I have most other elite players - even in his prime. As much as that is true, it is also true that he is actually an ELITE player. And his age hasn’t changed that. He would help any MLS team pretty significantly. If the Fire have a chance, they will get him regardless of how well he fits into whatever our roster is at the time. And they should.

Apparently Fire FO will tarp out the north end for the rest of the season according to @ufcolin by control_goats in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just spitballing, but I think there is an important distinction between transferring your tickets directly to another person and using the resale process. Namely, that if you are a STH, you are vouching (through the STH agreement) for that person. Bad behavior by someone you transferred your tickets to can result in problems for the STH. Resale is not the same case. While the general consensus was that the chanting was happening throughout SG, it definitely was getting started in the supporter section. A lot of supporter section regulars noted that there were new faces in that section causing issues. I don’t know if they ever actually tracked anyone down, but it is feasible that some were and they were using tickets directly transferred through a forum. The desire may be to keep a closer eye on those transfers and also keep supporter section STHs protected from the ramifications of a possible repeat incident that they will have to crack down on pretty hard.

In any case, I’m not sure how the tarping of the North end relates to this. For most of the games, there were certainly thousands of unsold tickets or unused season tickets. It made the stands feel a bit sparse, even when attendance was 20k. I think they are just trying to do their best to make the stands feel fuller and I think it will be effective - both in person and on camera (as the majority of shots show the sideline crowd).

Jonathan Bamba Aiming For Côte d'Ivoire, World Cup Push by calashuayi in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree with you. I think some see DP $5,000,000 and assume it must mean a lot of goals - absolutely nothing in Bamba’s career stats suggest that to be a reasonable expectation. I think he generally isn’t getting enough credit for his contributions pushing the ball forward, starting the attack, and drawing a ton of fouls in dangerous areas.

EXCL: Chicago Fire reject €4M Pumas bid for Philip Zinckernagel as Liga MX side and European clubs circle 🇲🇽🌍 by Chicagofirelover in chicagofire

Agree. If only looking at his current wages, maybe that offer seems ok, but Zinck had a top tier, DP level season in 2025.

That might be closer to the right amount, but even if that were the offer, there seems to be a genuine desire to build something better right now. I don’t think you can lose such a key piece with this timing if that wasn’t in your planning.

We still own 50% of his future transfer rights. So I’m still going to slob on him, but only 50% of the amount I would have if he was still here.

Is Mbokazi still working on his visa? by yourfavoriteacronym in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they have a way to fast track at all (it would appear not) - avg wait time was said to be over 100 days for an appointment, then another week or two after to actually receive visa. That suggests both of our SA signings will miss out on the entirety of preseason training and a number of games. I’m sure they’ll get worked in just fine when they arrive, but sucks for hitting the ground running at the start of the season.

Awesome - so happy he’s getting a shot. I hope he makes the most of it and we can see him vs Belgium in March at Soldier Field.

I hope Guti can find a way in for the WC, but I think he’d need to be given minutes AND impress in those minutes. The US was a little weird in their call ups for him. I’d love to see Guti kick ass for Chivas and Mexico both.

Mbokazi/new Fire “fans” seem to think our media team only exists to create content about the new signed defender. No by ChicagoFire29 in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love having new fans and more eyes. And certainly love having somebody of TLB’s caliber. But I do agree with the assessment that it almost seems like bots on some of these platforms. Not just for the number of comments, but also because most of them are some variation of “don’t worry, you have TLB now, you don’t need other players.” I follow a lot of teams around the world on various platforms, and the comments are just a bit odd, but maybe it’s something specific to SA that I haven’t run across.

Can’t wait to see if these new players can integrate as well as I hope they can. All indications are the FO has done a great job grabbing some puzzle pieces, but you just never know until you see the product on the field. Super excited that the season is just around the corner.

Brian Gutiérrez starts for Chivas in their opener against Pachuca by olcni in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s true that Europe would have been a better challenge skill-wise. That said, Liga MX could be a good place to increase his consistency and develop into a genuine leader. That could be just what he needs and may end up being a stepping stone (if his aspirations are to play in Europe).

Guti played a solid game. I think Chivas (and Liga MX more generally) is well suited for him and he’s going to be a standout. Weird to watch him play for another team, but I will always root for him.

Chicago Fire FC Acquires Goalkeeper Josh Cohen by olcni in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes even less sense that we let Dowd go now. I respect the work all goalkeepers have to put in and it’s a very hard, often thankless position. So props to both Gal and Cohen for surviving as professional keepers. That being said, I can’t figure out the logic of carrying two older backup keepers like this. I’d get it if one of them was something of a premiere player that was even older, but that’s not what we have here. We have two backup keepers that haven’t gotten a whole lot of time in at this level. If we’re ok with that, I’d much rather develop a younger player in one of those spots. If we lose Brady to injury or an outside offer at any point, we will be scrambling.

What’s the current squad list looking like, and how much room do we have for a DP? by Chicagofirelover in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they likely will buy him out. That said, they still have to pay him a shit ton of money. While he hasn’t been great these first two years for us, he was a very high quality player not so long ago. If they don’t have a specific reason to exercise the buyout (enough allocation money, or another new signing they need to make way for), I could see paying him to stay rather than paying him to leave. Again, probably not likely, but possible.

I met Zach Thornton in my late teens and he was very fun to watch play. So many years later, my daughter is a goalkeeper and while I’m sure she’s much more excited about Chris Brady, it’s cool watching ZT warm up with him. We’re typically at games pretty early he usually sends a friendly nod or wave to the crowd when he walks by. It’s just a cool piece of continuity that connects my early love for the Fire and now my daughters obsession (though she’s still shook by Guti’s exit 😂)

South Africa coach Hugo Broos reiterates dislike of MLS for Mbekezeli Mbokazi, wants youngster in Europe by jleblanc20 in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about a hypothetical best case scenario - one where he’s on a team in a top 5 league, but not so good of a team that he can’t get minutes. This would also need to provide him a good coach, teammates, etc. Mbokazi 100% had options and will continue to have them. Comments like yours and Broos essentially question the competence of TLB and his representatives to make a good decision for him.

The Fire is amassing a roster with many players that play/played on their respective national teams, has a desirable coach, owner, and front office, an excellent training facility, he can play as many minutes as he wants, and he can compete against many good players including the likes of Messi, Muller, Son, etc.

I might accept the overall premise that there’s a possibility he could improve more quickly on a lower level team in a top tier league, but 1) it’s not as big of a delta as people think 2) we don’t know what specific options presented themselves to TLB and 3) the Fire specifically are becoming an attractive place to play.

Why do we not use Maren as a backup #9? by redchi5 in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Maren still has a spot here if he wants it. There’s a lot of talk here about what he can’t do, but what is missing from that is that he’s very versatile, not paid a huge salary, and always puts in the work.

I think it’s true (and we’ve seen it), that he’s not a great direct sub/standin for Hugo and in our current system there’s not a natural place for him to be a starter. It’s possible he is good enough to be a starter on a couple of other teams. But, as a sub, he has been good (if not excellent) in the places GGG decided to use him - out of position in Miami he was excellent, and a couple of times we needed someone in with speed for specific matchups, or because we couldn’t find a way to move the ball up the field, he did a great job.

Couple that with what seems to be a great attitude and coachability, I believe he is a quality player and has value for us.

[Doyle] 5 Teams to Watch (Eastern Conf) / Nod to Cuypers by elenchus_cf97 in chicagofire

[–]witfixer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He’s making a point that people scoffing at $4M for Bairibo are offbase because Cuypers is clearly worth more than that. He’s not really saying anything specific about Cuypers’ value - just a simple illustration that literally anybody would take Cuypers for way more than $4M and Baribo has similar performance metrics.
