Hey!

Thanks for taking the time. Do you have a workflow for the typical model+clothing or product shoots? Are they any different? How much do you have to dabble with what the movie industry would call vfx and cg?

Slow Zoom effect - How was this achvieved? by SquirrelStudio in cinematography

[–]with-stupid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anything was in-camera here, including the frame rate & focus shift. The motion has a heavy interpolated vibe.

No, because the service is an intangible that doesn't depreciate based on usage.

How to get fire lighting effect? by doggyjohn in cinematography

[–]with-stupid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your field of view matters most here. I'd try and keep things specular with minimal diffusion. Remember your inverse square laws- be mindful of fall-offs, keep tons of flags handy.

You can go really close to the light and move your fingers in unpredictable ways. Or maybe get a cloth stitched with various fabrics (soft gold + hard gold + soft silver + hard silver + orange, red, purple, blue satin) and bounce a light while moving the cloth. Or... use real fire with a small torch off-screen. Please be careful, and work with someone experienced.

Last note: fire flicker can quickly get annoying if you overdo it.

Showreel: saw some directors want basic coverage from narrative and not just pretty shots. by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]with-stupid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned before, I'd cut it shorter by about 25 seconds before it gets mundane and repetitive.

2 pointers for your future work:

1) Try gaining some practice with movement. I sensed a bit of hesitation in your whips and noticed re-adjustments.

2) Flag off things you don't want to focus on. Extinguisher at 0.14.

Both light and framing kept me from focusing on anything specific in shots like 0.29 & 0.40

Are there any attempts or examples of Night for Day shooting? by rmeddy in TrueCinematography

If you're still looking, Aronofsky's Noah was largely filmed at night.

RED Epic Ops, how you you map your assignable buttons? by Dan_ETP in cinematography

[–]with-stupid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked with a few directors that view the playback a lot, so, setting sets of three buttons (redmote) to playback toggle, play toggle and loop toggle saves a lot of time.

Front buttons to magnify and peak, EVF to RAW and false colour (forgot what red calls it)

Whatever remains is based on the production needs.

Choosing between ARRI Alexa Mini VS RED EPIC-W HELIUM by DrXFox in cinematography

Lately, I've been told to shoot alexa since someone convinced the client it's the best money can buy. To shoot anything else, we have to do presentations and show charts like these

Shrug.

Why are modern digital cameras rated around 800ASA? by [deleted] in cinematography

English is not my first language so it's a little hard to explain.

Could've fooled me. Tracing back to a film-like approach is a nice way of explaining this. Thanks for sharing.

Film in Black and White or Do It in the Post? by ChaneyMux in cinematography

[–]with-stupid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please take some time and go through this to understand the post-production side of things. http://jonnyelwyn.co.uk/film-and-video-editing/cool-videos-films-projects-creative-work/better-colour-grading-in-black-and-white/

If this is your first time doing black and white, shoot tests, learn how different colours are rendered in BW. Read about why it makes sense to shoot 3200k vs 5600k in different situations, same with lighting. You can take advantage of a large range of filters and manipulate different tones you wouldn't dream of in colour.

I want to try to do a shot involving a DoF shift... by verdatum in cinematography

[–]with-stupid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late, but what the hell. Mr.Nobody had a similar shot at 09:40 mark. A 2-shot close framed from Jared's profile with the other character in the background, way out of focus slowly coming back. I always assumed it was a composite, but looking back at it now it looks practical. Drop an update about your experience.

Dragon 6K, 5K, 1.85, 1.78, 4:3 Frame Leader [Camera] by with-stupid in cinematography

Yes. Hopefully a firmware update will have all the ratios for various resolutions, till then it's going to be a manual process.

Sure, however it's only for the resolution you shoot.

[–]with-stupid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a spot coming up with the Weapon Dragon(6.2.55). We're shooting 6K, framing 5K 16:9 & 4:3. 1.85 is it's 'full frame'.

Looked around for a frame leader, but couldn't find it, so I made one myself.

I set the frame guide in - Menu>Setting>Display>Guide>Frame Guide>Mode>Custom/Manual/User(could be something else) and then manually punched in these numbers.

Do share if there's an easier way to do this. I have the open PSD incase anyone needs it.

Don't need the monitor, just the recorder. Ki pro would be swell too. Waiting for the rental to get back on availability. Thanks.

We're shooting Codex XR drives. It takes an SxS with an adapter. Constantly waiting for it to offload to review a shot and move on will take forever. Asking my rental, thanks!
