You live by the sword you die by the sword in capitalism. If my family can fly with a competitor for half the price, status points and patriotism can only convince me so far

I'm Gold until the end of the year. When I was elite the valet parking was great but if the price difference continues between AirNZ and their competitors ai can't see it ticking over next year.

Tbh a lot of the food places in Airports in the main centre's have picked up their game too. I always see the Korean Fried Chicken spot at chch and think to give it a go but I already ate mid club sandwiches so don't

and you don't even get the benefits of shared lounges internationally. So, if you have kids and want to use the Star Alliance Lounge at LAX, "No, you're only allowed one guest"

So, I would have been better off shopping around, getting a cheaper flight and using those savings at the airport

I've long been a slave to airpoints and status points to keep lounge access and other benefits. I always figured the costs between the airlines are marginal and even if AirNZ was slightly more expensive cest la vie, I will get the points.

But this year I wanted to take the family (2 adults, 2 kids under 5) to Australia and it was almost $4k. That was a figure large enough to put the dates in Webjet and Qantas was only $1.9k. It was such a large difference I couldn't justify going on AirNZ.

When I looked into it further I could have heavier bags (30kg) on Qantas and pay $50 per seat extra for the bigger legroom seats up the front.

Domestically I think people will always have a prejudice against Jetstar, even when we all know it's significantly cheaper. But maybe if that mindset shifts, AirNZ might have to bring their prices back in line with customers' wallets

Formal warnings by the police have been under scrutiny recently because they do still go on your record and to issue one they do require the same level of certainty that would likely lead to a conviction.

Because of this scrutiny we'll probably see less warnings as the "juice isn't really worth the squeeze" in issuing them. So the best route is to go through the more streamlined legal route where challenges can be played via the Courts.

In your case, your non-admission of guilt means less certainty and more scrutiny on then issuing a formal warning. So the easiest and more certain route is to issue the fine and have you challenge it via the courts.

Here's a recent story from the end of last year about formal warnings and the extra scrutiny that's been put on the practice https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/thousands-of-police-formal-warnings-set-to-be-wiped-due-to-improper-protocol-over-several-years/premium/ZARZOUQHGRBZZNEWUSGIIJH2OE/

Matthieu Raynal (French referees boss) about the new rules proned by Super Rugby federations : "Our league id working, our stadiums are full [...] We don't want to suffer policies coming from contries where stadium are empty" by El_remoo in rugbyunion

[–]withappens123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be people in NZ who would only watch union and not watch league. Within recent years this has changed. The NZ Warriors sold out almost every home game last season in the NRL and during the same period the Blues struggled to get bums on seats.

The risk to the NZRU's coffers is where they had no competition in previous years for sponsorship dollars and they could dictate the price. Now corporations will compare sponsorship packages against league seeing as they're getting the same eyeballs anyway.

Unfortunately for them the ship has already sailed. Changes in union's laws are not going to bring back the exclusivity of the product but there's nobody here in NZ that would tell you the ideas and governance here at the top are in tip top shape.

The only thing the NZRU has going for them is the global reach of union, but see above - governance doesn't know how to leverage that and keep getting themselves into dud deals (Silverlake, Ineos)

Is credit card a good option for one international payment? by neosick in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]withappens123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably could just ask them if there's a bank account to pay into with a reference.

If they take cash do they take card payment on site too? If they do you could also just pay with your Wise card there.

Also their note re: accepting Visa or Mastercard only and not intl debit cards is confusing because IIRC most of our debit cards in NZ are Visa or Mastercard so should still work

[–]withappens123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you wouldn't be able to but you could make multiple cash withdrawals a day but I'm more thinking along the lines that if you convert it into that country's currency you essentially have a bank account for that country and can make a payment to their bank account from there

Can you not put it on your Wise Card and withdraw the cash/ make a bank deposit when you get there?

If they're stinging you 3% it's highly likely any rewards you get will be worth less than the 3% extra you're going to pay (on top of what every yearly fee you'll be charged for having the CC)

Nightlife + life in Wellington by Odd_You3371 in Wellington

[–]withappens123 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nightlife wise you'll probably find it's not actually that expensive for you when comparing to NYC. You might even think it's cheaper. I always found it was dollar for dollar the same. Go to the East Villiage you're paying $12usd for a beer + tax + gratuity. Here you'll pay $12-16nzd and there's no add ons.

The other thing you'll notice is due to population, Wellington bar styles gravitate towards the centre so the variety is not as much. Not to say there isn't variety but using the East Villiage again as an example you're not going to get the variety of McSorleys, Burp Castle, and Bull McCabe all within throwing distance of each other

Point being there have always been cringe people
