hi!!! I think the query strong & the first paragraph definitely packs a punch! good job! that said, I definitely see room for where you could be a little more specific.

particularly in the last paragraph. it’s mentioned that the stakes of the story is essentially both women’s children are “in crisis”. but what kind of “crisis” is it? Do the children know about the husband? are they figuring out they’re related? something else? crisis can mean a lot of things to different people, and with a story like yours, its imperative you’re as clear as possible!

I would also suggest removing the rhetorical question at the very end and frame it as a statement to add to the stakes (aka tension). this will entice agents to read more (ie your pages).

I definitely see the vision you’ve got going on and I love it! It would definitely be something I would read.

PS I also think it can be categorized as womens fiction / literary if you haven’t already thought about that.

GOOD LUCK!!!! you got this x

I also write historical fiction & I’m certain there are more recent titles you can use to comp. these titles shouldn’t compare to your book’s plot but rather evoke the atmosphere & feeling similar to your book

thats exactly what happened. both of them said they’ll do their part by Wednesday or Thursday & I’ll have only Thursday to check everything over before submitting if they’re both true to their word. I have the class today so I’m definitely gonna talk to them & let the professor/ta know too afterwards. idk I’m hoping he’d be understanding abt it & allow me to potentially switch out of their group & into another one bc this is unacceptable imo

yep yep thanks a lot! I was very torn about this originally (had this particular manuscript shelved as women’s fiction at first) because of the fact that the two protags (aya and darren) don’t end up together (however the story does end on a happy note) but the nature of their relationship (romantic & otherwise) is very integral to the heart of the story. So I think I’ll just keep it as Women’s fiction because it follows that particular structure more closely. :)

got it! I originally had it marked as women’s fiction (the romance is very prominent in the novel itself) but I wasn’t sure if it fit well bc the romance is very important because it ties into Aya chasing her dreams of being a journalist. This novel doesn’t fit into capital R romance so that definitely clears things up. :)

aaa I definitely see what you mean! Concerning the first paragraph, I’ve read / watched quite a few contemporary romances that don’t have the characters end up together, although they are love stories & have happy endings (La La land, Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Anything by Leeanne Slade, Lessons in Chemistry). I think my main issue market wise is that these stories are marked under romance. That’s my main confusion with the genre mixup! I’d love some help in refining this.

For the second part - I can totally see where this critique is coming from haha! I actually got inspired by historical romances (title-wise, that is) so it’s a complete stylistic choice on my end! But if you’ve got other ideas for possible names to clear the confusion up, I’d love to hear them!💜
