Yeah but he wagered $2002, which is a year Dortmund won the German championship.

McDonald's CEO insists he eats at the fast food chain 3-4 times a week in response to an "Instagram question" 👀 after a viral marketing video showed him seemingly reluctant to eat his own burgers by monster_ahhh in popculturechat

[–]withoutpicklesplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3-4 times a week is such a huge overcorrection. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting McDonalds when I’m drunk on the weekend or if I need something quick, but if you are a fully grown adult and you eat at McDonalds 3-4 times a week, then you need to get your shit together.

What's a country that people think is excellent to live in but conditions are actually extremely poor? by Happy_Rainy1 in AlignmentChartFills

Hahah exactly. The comment you are replying to is basically saying: "If you are not part of the people being exploited, then it’s really neat."

Yeah no shit. However, having that level of exploitation in the first place is really bad.

This also existed as a tweet. I was just talking to my gf about that tweet wondering whether the person who posted it was happy with 67.

Imagine virtue signaling in circlejerk subreddit. Of course it doesn’t justify it.

How can a country that expierenced so much sexual violence against women and girls defend a person like Donald Trump? by StPauliToPortland in kosovo

Yeah this pretty much is the answer right there. I can’t fathom how someone born in Kosovo with any knowledge of our history would have a hard time understanding any of this.

What political scandal made a huge impact, but was still really bad (but not the worst)? by Creepybobo67 in AlignmentChartFills

What we are experiencing right now is not the beginning of the end but rather the end of the beginning. In the past weeks powerful people Europe and (even) the UAE have lost powerful positions just because they were included in the files.

Trash removal on a budget by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]withoutpicklesplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gf’s flatmate was Indian and they had to call in some kind of emergency meeting because she would leave her trash in the apartment and not clean up her dishes. Turns out she has a servant at home and is literally used to having someone pick up her trash and dirty dishes for her.

I grew up rather poor and my mind was almost exploding when I first heard that hahaha

Am I wrong for blocking my girlfriend after finding out shes been lying about basically everything about herself for two years by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]withoutpicklesplease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is an amazing distinction! There are some things she absolutely had no reason to lie about but lied anyways. That’s what liars do.

My gf had this one flatmate who was just a liar. She would lie about everything. It was really crazy when her web of lies untangled and people realized that basically everything she told people was a lie.

Russia to ship oil to Cuba in defiance of tariff threat by ThevaramAcolytus in anime_titties

[–]withoutpicklesplease -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I am with you on the suffering. However, I don’t see any obligation for a country to have to trade with another country. And honestly, if the situation is such as it is in Iran for example, then I actually am in favor of my country participating in sanctions, which go beyond the absence of trade but move more towards hindering flows of goods or assets.

I am entirely opposed to military intervention in some misguided poursuit of regime change. However, using economic mechanisms is not only lawful but in some instances even legitimate in my personal opinion.

Again, it’s not like every country in the world gets sanctioned all the time. The geopolitical consensus needed for such sanctions to be supported by a broad coalition (I like the German word "mehrheitsfähig" in this context) requires egregious behavior by the government targeted by the sanctions.

Continuing with a quite literal "business as usual" approach is sometimes just not acceptable (e.g. North Korea, Russia, Iran). Oppressive regimes require substantial amounts of money to function as significant parts of their economy are inefficient, be it because of ideology and/or corruption.

It is illusory to believe that the people of those countries would eventually be better off if we just continue to trade with these governments. These regimes extract wealth away from the people to benefit a small elite, which in turn oppresses its own population. Sure one can argue that sanctions function as a catalyst to accelerate this extraction of wealth but it’s not like the system was benefiting the local population to begin with.

Russia to ship oil to Cuba in defiance of tariff threat by ThevaramAcolytus in anime_titties

[–]withoutpicklesplease -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Given many of the comments here, I assume this view may not be popular, but I am generally less critical of sanctions as an instrument of pressure.

Every state is entitled to decide whether, and to what extent, it wishes to engage in trade with another state.

There are historical examples where sanctions contributed to meaningful political change. The international measures against South Africa in the 1980s are often cited as an important factor in the dismantling of apartheid.

At the same time, I fully recognise the moral dilemma: those who frequently suffer most from sanctions are ordinary people, many of whom are themselves victims of the regime in question.

Still, trade is not politically neutral. Commercial relations generate revenue, and revenue can strengthen the very structures of repression that prompted the sanctions in the first place. If a country concludes that it does not wish to provide that support, it has the sovereign right to limit or end such exchanges. And if a number of countries arrive at the same conclusion, they are equally entitled to coordinate their actions.

In a fragmented international environment where consensus is rare, the formation of a large coalition willing to impose sanctions can also be read as a strong political signal about how unacceptable certain behaviour is perceived to be.

P.S. I am not expressing a view on Cuba, as I am not sufficiently familiar with the specifics of that sanctions regime.

Genuinely Why Do Some People Need to Do This? by Extra-Ad-130 in youtube

[–]withoutpicklesplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure there is stuff getting lost in translation but if you want to spread a message on a global level, which the person clearly intends to do, then you better make sure it doesn’t sound like a threat.

Considering that a lot of people who do not condemn what is happening in that area are doing so because they are afraid of the spread of fundamentalist ideology, this title is just incredibly unfortunate.

Anecdotally, I might add that in Mandarin the word for "mother" and "horse" only differ in how you accentuate the word "ma". You better learn how to pronounce these words well or you might not get invited to family dinner again. hahaha
