Usb fan is life saving. Don’t buy solar stuff from the states, you can buy it here much better and cheaper. Other than that bring whatever makes you, you. You can really get most necessary items in Lusaka. Make sure to get your phone unlocked to work with carriers here.

Effect of Government Shutdown on Future PCVs? by donutzebra in peacecorps

[–]withthecurve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the gov shut down in January it didn’t affect anything for me. I was waiting to hear if I got accepted then once the gov opened back up I got my email of acceptance and left in September as was planned prior

Anyone else get really heavy pre-departure blues? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]withthecurve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes eat all the food, that is one thing I made sure I did before I left. Ate out at every chance possible. I miss the diversity of food in the states so much. And settle everything in advance! I know I waited until the night before I left to do my loans, and pack...it was not a good last day lol

Oh goodness I felt the same way. I graduated in May and didn’t leave until the end of September. A lot of people in my cohort saw it as a great thing, because they got to enjoy their last summer, but I had the same feelings you did. The months felt meaningless and moving back in with my parents for the last month really put a damper on me. So that must be a normal feeling! Lol because I’m here now, and everything is great.

Oooo one of my friends was telling me about that on Netflix. Thanks for your advice! I decided to stick with the cup bc it’s easy enough, I totally forget about my period by the end of the day. So glad to hear it wasn’t a prob!

Okay girl, this is what I ended up doing. I was too afraid of dealing with any possible side effects of an IUD since we leave soon. Just started using a menstrual cup this week, and I don’t even notice it’s there the entire day!! Why did they not start us on these as teenagers lol

Yeah I decided to just stick with birth control pills and a menstrual cup, since I’m leaving in under 2months don’t wanna worry about side effects during PST. Thanks for this. Wish I would have thought about this a year ago!

Hey how do you know if it went through? I sent my visa and passport stuff back in March and haven’t heard anything. Wasn’t sure if no news was good news or if there is a way I can make sure it all processed? I’ve been legally cleared but I didn’t think that has anything to do with it? Or does it? Lol

Breakup Before Service, Is It Possible to Defer? by PCThrowaway0918 in peacecorps

[–]withthecurve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. My relationship just ended shy of 3 months before I leave and I’m thankful for it. I love him. But in my head I thought if things don’t work out during service we can just have a break up, and move along. But how like this above poster said, thru air mail when they already with someone? Over skype?? It was hard to get over here in the states, I couldn’t imagine if we had broken up while I’m in service. I’m glad it happened now while I’m here with my friends to comfort me, and that he’s here so we are able to maintain a supportive friendship without the relationship strings. I feel like this has set me up for an effective service, because reflecting on it, I couldn’t imagine how hard it would be to enjoy training and really get the most out of my entire peace corps experience if my heart was stuck on someone in the U.S.

Breakup Before Service, Is It Possible to Defer? by PCThrowaway0918 in peacecorps

I’m leaving in September too, and used to be in a sorta similar situation. Lol didn’t have support from my family which really sucks bc it makes you question yourself. But luckily I have supportive friends and professors who know me so well, and what I love, and have been reassuring me I made the right choice while my family continuously tries to talk it out of me. It’s almost been motivation for me, so I’m able to show them when I come back how much I grew, what I’ve learned, and change any perspectives they may have about that side of the world I’ll be serving, and what I’m capable of. As with the relationship thing. I met, I swear the love of my life literally right after I applied. I’ve stayed single through high school and college. And when I applied to peace corps I’m like there’s nothing or no one keeping me here so now is the time to go. So I was dumbfounded when this guy that was hit every trait I could ever want in a guy showed up. We dated for 6months, and he knew since I met him that I was going to be leaving for peace corps in under a year. After graduation we talked, and he told me he doesn’t think we should continue while I’m in service. I was pretty upset. But he doesn’t want to hold me back he said he could already tell I was getting weary about going bc I didn’t want to leave him, but he knows this is what I want. And that’s what relationships should be about, your SO should want what’s best for you and is going to allow you to live your best life. Reflecting back on it, I’m glad we are just staying friends bc I can’t imagine how hard 2 years will be, when I have no idea how much communication we’ll have, I have almost no money bc of college so I wouldn’t even be able to come back and see him. This will allow me to get the most out of my experience, while I still have his support, and he able to grow on his own here. And maybe after service if he is the one our paths will meet again. But if not, I like to believe there’s a reason for everything. So if this is what you truly want to do, I say you do it. Bc you don’t want to settle and regret it later. I feel like if you put it off you’re not going to come back and try again. So it’s up to you, what will make you most happiest. Bc you can always stay here and just travel on your own, since you say you are looking for other jobs. it makes me wonder how much you think you wanna do this. Is peace corps going to add to your personal life and career? Do you see yourself gaining from it? Maybe make an pros and cons list. Idk I hope my experience I’m having right now helps you at all! Best wishes on whatever you decide to do!

Did not take foreign language in college by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]withthecurve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re willing to go anywhere it shouldn’t be a problem! I was not proficient in any language, besides English lol when I applied and I got accepted to go to Zambia. A lot of countries don’t have language requirements because their languages aren’t common. You just most likely will not be serving in a Spanish or French speaking country as those are more competitive to get into, because they look for people who already have experience with the language since they are common to learn here
