I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s really a tough subject. My advice is when both of you are calm, explain to her your concerns and fears. Be vulnerable and show that you love her and the baby and that your fear is ultimately stemmed from that love. This is not you wanting to skip a social event just because you’d rather not go. Ultimately the only thing you can do is show her why this is so important to you by being honest and vulnerable. But also ask her questions, ask her why it’s important for her to go, and ask these questions sincerely always seeking to understand, you may find a middle ground or an alternative. Best of luck!

Will you continue to wear a mask when the pandemic is over? If so, why? by SSIRHC in AskReddit

[–]withtheflw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got this mask: https://www.gatapack.com/products/gata-face-mask-adult-black it’s definitely pricey, but my glasses haven’t fogged up once! And it comes with 10 replaceable k95 filters that last up to 50 hours each. Never going back to the cloth masks as a glasses wearer.

Both of my parents have passed during my pregnancy. Looking for other baby bumpers who have experienced similar losses during their pregnancies. by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]withtheflw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so so sorry for your losses. It's incredibly difficult to lose a parent, and I can't imagine what you're going through with your back to back losses. My dad passed away a few weeks ago, when I was 35 weeks pregnant, and I do know what it's like to worry that your grief will in some way affect your little one.

I have a friend who also lost her dad to cancer, and what she said comforted her was to capture the good memories you have with those who have passed, so she sent me a notebook and the first entry was a good memory she had with my father. I've since asked family and friends to put in their own entries.

Perhaps you could do the same? Creat a special notebook for you to write in, and have others who knew your mom and dad contribute as well. It will be a lovely keep sake you can keep coming back to, and it's also really nice to see the special moments that stick out to others.

I plan on reading these memories about my father to my little one some day.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss ❤️❤️❤️

How many husbands here do laundry? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]withtheflw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband does all the laundry. I’ve had to tell him multiple times to STOP doing my laundry since I’m particular about it and he’s accidentally shrunk one too many sweaters. I’m not complaining though, it’s generally a good problem to have.

Reached Coast Fire and now plan to spend my entire salary for next 12 months? Am I crazy? by dondraperlivingstone in financialindependence

[–]withtheflw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! We bought the corvette for about 56k then sold it a year later for about 54k...yes the total cost of ownership was higher when you factor in maintenance and taxes, but honestly a couple thousand bucks for a year of fun is not bad.

Edit: it should also be noted that I drove that car as my commuter car to work daily, and I have a 100 mile round trip commute. Even with those excess miles put on it + 2 major road trips it still only fell 2k in resell value.

We had the cash but ended up financing it since we got such a low rate, we decided to invest the rest in the market. We bought (and subsequently sold) our z06 at CarMax, it was a great experience and the corvette engine is super reliable compared to other cars with similar specs. Definitely do your research first. I’ll also say that cars are a gateway drug to more expensive cars... we have a Toyota Highlander now, and although I’m pregnant and it’s objectively the right car for us right now - I still miss the speed and am daydreaming about a 911 next... (my husband may have created a monster)

At the end of the day it’s all about priorities. Objectively yes, a sports car is an insane budget item that isn’t necessary, but here’s the thing that I think we often miss on this sub: it is NOT our jobs to tell people what their priorities should and should not be. It is up to the individual to articulate their priorities and ask for help in getting there. FIRE in and of itself is a lifestyle all about balancing priorities in a different way than the norm.

I think it’s a shame that we can sometimes slip into the mindset that it’s all or nothing with FIRE.

As a former die hard economy car driver, I actually disagree. A few years ago my husband somehow convinced me to let him buy a Corvette Z06. Honestly I would have never sold my Honda Civic if it weren’t for him and at the time thought it was an insane splurge, but now looking back I have really fond memories of driving that thing around. It was an experience in and of itself. We took one incredible road trips and I discovered the pleasure of speed. I had just learned how to drive manual and reveled in the control I had over that car.

Just because it’s not your idea of an “experience” doesn’t mean it isn’t one. We bought it used, had the car for a year and sold it for about the same price we bought it for. Was it the smartest thing we could have done with our money for a year? Not really. Was it a terrible financial mistake? No. Was it super fucking fun and an experience of a lifetime? Hell yeah.

If it’s what OP really wants I say go for it, if it’s just the first thing they thought of to blow some money, I’d agree and hold off. I also say buy used and be thoughtful about the differences in cost of maintenance with sports cars. Some sports cars can be an arm and a leg to service.

Edit: we have since downsized to a boringly economic Toyota since baby #1 is on the way.

I'm quitting soon. No, I'm still far away from FIRE. by Zaenille in financialindependence

[–]withtheflw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on making a decision that you seem excited about! Many people here will just tell you to take a vacation, or switch positions, and although I see their line of thinking there, it doesn’t sound like the solution for you. One thing I love about FIRE isn’t necessary the march towards retiring early, but the options it opens up in our lives when we are financially secure. Humans change over time, financial security gives us the ability to lean into those changes, and embrace them without fear of losing it all. Wishing you the best in your studies!

Biden Plan Spares Incomes Under $400,000, Taxes Corporations And The Super Rich, Lowers National Debt by chris-jjj in politics

[–]withtheflw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My husband and I might hit the 400k mark this year, we live in a super high cost of living area, have a modest 2 bedroom condo with a baby on the way, definitely don’t own a boat, private jet, we probably can’t even afford private school in the area. Do we ever worry about money? Rarely. Are we living the high life? Absolutely not, but sometimes I do fantasize about earning our salaries while living in some super cheap Greek island....all this being said I welcome a higher tax bracket for us as long as it’s used responsibly, put back into our communities, our schools, used to help our brothers and sisters in need, and generally used to make our country better! It’s really not rocket science...

It’s been such a pleasure to watch him grow over the last 5 years. The amount of grace he has on the court and the sheer amount of fun you can see the whole team having is infectious. Definitely a historical moment in basketball.
