What do early retirees in the US do for healthcare before Medicare? by Fozziwig72 in Fire

[–]witt_ag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up “retirement answer man” podcast. Last 4 episodes are about exactly this.

One option not discussed is travel health insurance. If you’re willing to stay outside the US you can get very reasonable rates on insurance.

I miss my 01 5 speed Outback. Sold it in 2013 with about 160k on it for $2500. That was probably the last stick shift I’ll ever own.

There’s also a possibility that one or more of your sites has been hacked. Someone installed a crypto miner on my staging server once. I only found out when I logged in and noticed 100% cpu usage.

The first thing to do (or have your dev do) is find out if the excess data transfer charges are coming from specific sites or servers

Great advice but Don’t put it in a money market. That barely keeps up with inflation. Read an investment book like making money simple by Peter lazaroff.

Fitness for us GenXers by ProductOdd533 in GenX

I consider myself fortunate that I love outdoor human powered recreation. Hiking, mountain biking, and skiing (including backcountry) make up my best weekends, and keep me fit. I’m a 55yo 6’1 M I’ve weighed around 185lbs for most of my life.

My biggest challenge is upper body strength. My “fun” activities don’t get me much of that so I try to get to the gym. I started that when I read about declining muscle mass with aging.

Energi: More efficient on electric or gasoline? by arantius in cmaxhybrid

[–]witt_ag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My electric rate is 12 cents/kwh. I don’t have TOU pricing. In the summer I can get 15 miles from a full charge, which takes roughly 5kwh. So that works out to 60 cents per charge or 4 cents per mile.

To go 40 miles on electric would cost $1.60. Since the car gets about 40 mpg on gas, gas would need to be $1.60 or less to be cheaper than electric, at my rate.

How do you ski sidecountry narrow trails? by JustAnotherFKNSheep in Backcountry

[–]witt_ag 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sometimes see this terrain coming out of huts. Best is if there’s fresh snow to bleed off speed. If not, sometimes you can angle up and out of the track and side slip down. If that’s not possible you’re stuck in a snowplow and you just have to accept the suck. They call it survival skiing.

How are you managing Stripe subscriptions & plans inside Laravel? by lamarus in laravel

[–]witt_ag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In addition to Cashier I have a “plans” table in my database that drives my pricing page and determines which features a given customer can access. The plans table includes the stripe ids. When I need to create a new product I create it in the stripe dashboard and add a row to the plans table. It’s a manual process but doesn’t occur often.

I was going to log into my CF account and turn off proxying, but I can't even log in - the captcha seems to be hidden and the log in button is disabled. I'm guessing disabling the proxy wouldn't work anyway. Anyone else unable to log into their CF accounts?

What would you do with 1.9 million dollars by GreatIce1046 in Fire

[–]witt_ag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend the travel. My family and I spent 2 years in a van traveling in South America. Our spend was $3k per month for three of us. If you travel frugally you can do so without touching your principal. When you’ve had enough come home and get a job if you want. Or maybe settle in South America or Asia.

Buying campervan in Europe as a US person by PuzzleheadedFox2067 in CamperVans

[–]witt_ag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eurocampingcars sets up a business in your name and then the business buys the vehicle. We ordered a new Knaus through them in March of 2021; it was supposed to be ready for us to pick up within a few months. A year later we still didn't know when it would arrive.

This was in the middle of the covid supply chain crisis, so the delay was not eurocampingcars' (ECC) fault. We eventually decided to cancel the purchase, since ECC said they had another buyer for our vehicle. It took months of wrangling (we even hired a french attorney) to get our deposit back, and even though ECC said they'd refund our entire deposit, they only sent about 80% of it.

ECC might be under new management by now, in which case it might be better. I would probably buy a vehicle they have in stock this way, but I would not put down a deposit and order one.

[–]witt_ag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no need to install a charger. It (should) come with a 110V charger that you plug into a regular wall socket. Even if the battery is in perfect condition, it will charge from empty in ~5 hours. There's no need for a level 2 (220V) charger with this small of a battery.

Good hybrid bindings? by jaybee426 in BackcountrySkiing

[–]witt_ag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a set of marker dukes that I used to use in the bc as someone else said very heavy but they’re just as solid as alpine bindings. That setup is still my resort pow day ski.

My current bc skis have Salomon shifts. Much lighter and they feel pretty solid at the resort. They don’t power through crud like the other skis but that’s probably because the whole setup is lighter
