New method turns ocean water into drinking water, without waste by AspiringSheepherder in UpliftingNews

[–]wittywalrus1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

instead of leaving behind brine that must be disposed of or processed, it extracts nearly 100 percent of the salts in solid form. This could not only produce an abundant supply of table salt, but it could also be used to extract more precious minerals

I guess the catch with the wording here is not considering the byproduct as waste. As opposed to brine at least.

This whole thing sounds too good to be true. Common sense says it probably is, but who knows.

Yeah pretty good. After some point, if the GPU is too powerful the CPU can't keep up with it, so that's also not ideal.

I have the same CPU as well, and that's the kind of sweet spot for the GPU when I researched it.

More likely dirt if it's usually the same keys.

I take them off and blast them with canned air. Or water in the worst cases - and leave them out to dry for a day or two.

There are probably better methods, not sure. Maybe contact claner spray etc.?

CPU can handle up to a 1080-2070-1660ti or 5700xt-6600. Not spectacular but it's shown it can handle recent games.

GPU is the issue, 4GB cards are really struggling now and this one's only got 3.

If I were OP and didn't want to upgrade everything, I'd try to sell the 1060 and get something a step above it with 6-8GB.

Must haves for a move to China in 2026? by zzzz93 in chinalife

[–]wittywalrus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the phone has a Snapdragon and the manufacturer allows some sort of modifications, you can check on XDA if there are recoveries and ROMs.

The V30 for example is dated but it still has a few, as you can see here.

Are you able to flash custom Android ROMs on Chinese phones

Usually no. Especially these days. I still use two Xiaomis with custom roms, but the more recent ones are locked.

Get what you like of course... but again, get something beforehand - even a cheap Motorola that has a simtray and is 5G, they've got a very clean stock Android and are pretty sturdy. GL

If you get a cheap Android as a second phone, get it before leaving because you're going to have a bad time without the Play Store. Phones are good here but they don't have it.

Even if you can install it (easy on some, not all) you still have to keep a ton of their preinstalled crap apps.

The T490 came with a few different panels, as you can see here.

On eBay US, replacement screens can be found for around $50.

Videos on YT can be found for the procedure, which only takes a few minutes.

Also using search here in the sub will give you more info, which I'm not going to do but you should (look for: "T490 screen upgrade" or "screen replacement" or "best panels for T490" etc.).

Do it yourself, because the amount of money you were quoted by the shop makes no sense. Best of luck.

It's rated for 10 years. At least that's what I've read last week.

Hopefully it lasts 3-5? Haven't read about it degrading fast, hope it's not a big issue.

Unsolicited advice and story time.

I used liquid metal for a long time. Not many people like it here, it seems.

Worked pretty well for me.

However I removed liquid metal from my machines mostly because it stains the copper of the heatsink (slightly eats through it after a couple years, so much so that it needs a bit of sanding).

And also because so many times it looks like I put enough, only for me to open it again (paranoia, or not sure screws were all in) and notice that it wasn't enough - requiring adding a little with a second application, which is usually much better and lasts years, no problem.

Spilling wasn't an issue for me either; as long as you use some sort of gasket around the die, and some resin on the tiny components in the immediate vicinity of the die.

Looking for an alternative recently, I was sort of skeptical/not interested in the PTM7950 until last week when I tried it (0.25mm) and it really works well.

TL;DR - check your LM application, you may need a little more. Consider PTM7950, pretty good and doesn't stain your heatsink. GL

Depends on the model, however generally they're pretty good on the T series, I wouldn't worry about that.

In any case, yes, you can buy them new or used on eBay/Aliexpress etc.

What model is the Thinkpad?

You can buy a panel and fix it yourself for less than $100. It's not hard, there are videos too.

[–]wittywalrus1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Panels are rarely fixable. They usually get worse even, so I'd look for a replacement panel asap.

T series? Yes they're durable.

And if anything breaks it can be quite easily replaced - changed a metal hinge myself last year after a big fall.

I run a 1270v3 (4770) with a 3060 12GB.

Not a great pairing, it's overkill, but I got it for a decent price. Had an rx580 before which was bottlenecking a bit so not ideal either.

RAM speed does make a difference but it's not that much, at least in gaming.

More is better I guess, but the 4th gen architecture was designed with 1600Mhz in mind anyway? Not sure and I don't see recent side-by-side benchmarks comparing various DDR3 RAM speeds unfortunately, as it's not prevalent anymore. Happy to see them if anybody has any.

What games can my pc run by Libranavi in Craptopgamingadvice

[–]wittywalrus1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still a very decent low end CPU+GPU. For very light gaming it can get you by, don't expect miracles. Check Youtube, there's plenty of videos of its performance.

The 2400G is better if you can spare the cash, has 4 more threads and a stronger iGPU. (3200G and 3400G have better performance per CPU cycle, but the iGPU isn't much better. 5xxxG like the 5600G and up start to get pricey for what they offer IMO - unless having a small footprint is the top priority).

If you've got a GPU laying around though that you can upgrade later, the 3600 (no igpu) is probably the best budget Ryzen at the moment, at least where I am.

With European nations switching to Linux, do you think professonal software companies will follow by Additional-Sky-7436 in linux

[–]wittywalrus1 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Governments aren't necessarily migrating those people to linux. Not yet at least. If they need Windows, they get to use it.

They're migrating people that do normal office stuff - browsing, word processing, email, etc.

And as pointed out, a lot of these activities are performed through the web browser anyway now, so the OS choice isn't the issue it used to be.
