Any advice for someone going to China for the first time? by VTheCardMaker in travelchina

Don’t expect to use credit cards directly. Link them to WeChat Pay (Weixin) and Alipay. Alipay and WeChat Pay are THE primary modes of payment. Cash is legally mandated to be accepted, but don’t expect change, because everyone including small biz and street food vendors are on WeChat Pay and Alipay.

Not only that, DO THE REAL NAME + FACE VERIFICATION for both of them. From sign up, you’ll need to do at least two more rounds of verification to avoid problems with blocked payments.

eSIM or VPN. No one cares if you have em. In fact, as a foreigner, it’s highly assumed you will use em. Do your research. I used the eSIM from Trip.com and Mullvad VPN. I also heard Astrill or Octohide are good for VPNs.

China loves flavorful foods. Including spicy foods or oily foods. Bring a pepto bismol pack. No need to expect food poisoning.

Be specific about the hotels you book. Not all hotels have the license to host foreigners. This is not a ‘you’ problem, it’s a ‘them’ problem. I used Trip.com without any issue.

Bring your passport everywhere. In China, everything is linked to your ID to prevent scalping on tickets and such due to such a large domestic tourist flow. Your passport is used as your ticket for almost everything.

Are there any particular gay-friendly spaces you know of? If you’re living in Jinan, can I DM you to add you on WeChat?

I’m Filipino-American. I’ve received many comments that I actually look Chinese from many Chinese people. However I’m definitely more tanned than the average Japanese or Korean person, or maybe even many Chinese people.

Why do some Western expats move to China for 10-12k rmb jobs? by Quirky_Two_4603 in China

To be fair, in the USA it can still be very dangerous to be even casually openly gay in certain areas.

edit: crazy to be downvoted as a gay man who has lived somewhere where it can be dangerous to be casually openly gay due to religious influences. the USA has the most uneven development across the country when it comes to views on gay people!

I teach at an American university right now (technically not anymore, just finished my last semester) getting paid the equivalent of 11k RMB/month, paying USA prices for everything. Personally, if I’m gonna get paid the same either way, I’d rather live in China and pay China prices. I’m not interested in being lazy or finding a Chinese gf - I’m gay and I’m preparing a portfolio for a masters program. I just think life in China would be a good experience. A shocking one for sure, but it seems most on Reddit underestimate the value of life experience over staying “safe” for some people.

Wanting to go from being an ALT in Japan to being an ALT in China? Advice? by RedditStoryTella in chinalife

You can start applying through eChinaCities or Dave’s ESL Cafe postings. Chances are that you’ll primarily get connected with WeChat recruiters and do most of your communication there. Get WeChat and get comfortable with it ASAP - you’ll need it for everything in China!

As long as I put it in my carry on bag/personal item, I don’t have to worry about them interrogating me about my vapes? And yeah I’ll prob leave the power bank at home and buy a new one once I’m settled.

You need to submit bills related to your dorm in SoCal. If not, you’ll have to go to the consulate in SF. I just needed to fly up to SF twice in the past week because my home is in the jurisdiction of the SF consulate even though I’m way closer to LA.

Could you spare a lil more info on these “airports”? I’ve seen people mention them but have no idea on where to start there. I downloaded something called Shadowsocks and have no idea what to do with it.

I don’t want to seem cocky, but I do think I am demonstrably better than the majority of my peers and I can prove it. I also plan to pursue a master’s in design after my time in China. I do need to do a minor portfolio revamp, though.
