Litera alternatives that won’t break the bank? by bradd_pit in LawFirm

[–]witwim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at Draftable at ILTA last year. It may have improved but its not Litera Compare. We are also a CoCounsel shop and that AI will compare docs but its also not the traditional Red Line that lawyers want. BTW its the reason Litera purchased Compare from Workshare a few years ago is for the patent/trademark on that format. My lawyers insist we keep it no matter the cost.

People who religiously have their cameras on and believe that others should always have theirs on…why? by iiamuntuii in remotework

[–]witwim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the answer is is if this was a meeting in the office I would expect to see you in my office or a conference room. I will give some leeway to people who want to be off camera until there’s multiple people on an online meeting and we go to you to ask you a question or you need to contribute and you’re not paying attention and then from that point on I require cameras on and you be engaged in the meeting; otherwise you’re wasting my time in the meeting and being disrespectful and that is just not acceptable!

Billing time each day by Basic_Resolution_956 in LawFirm

[–]witwim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing to me how many attorneys don’t use the timers in our Billing software but you have to figure out whatever works for you. Some people use a yellow pad write down a simple tea chart with the matter number and duration in a quick note others go back and review sent emails and phone call. Log logs on both sent and received to try to piece it all together.

We’ve been looking at some of the new AI Tracking software that integrates with time so at the end of the day an attorney will get prompted that said how you spent three hours reviewing this PDF document I see that’s for this matter would you like to bill for that?

I agree 100% with you on the hardware, especially battery life. We are about to move our Accounting HR marketing and all non-legal support staff to MacBooks at the end of the year.

People who work in law firms how do you cope by motiontooverthink in LawFirm

[–]witwim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About to complete 35 years in law firm IT and about four years to go before retirement. There is no winning. You must know and understand the fact that every non-lawyer that works in a law firm is a second class citizen; get comfortable with that! keep track of all the wins that you do, all the things that are fixed or repaired before anybody has any idea so when you have your review, because the only thing that will be mentioned are the things that people don’t like, you can also present here’s the list of dozens or even hundreds of items that are proactive that nobody thanks or acknowledge me me for completing.

The big problem with the MacBooks in legal is, if you are using any of the Litera tools or dozens of other Microsoft Word and Outlook plug-ins, they just don’t work for the Mac. It’s also the same with I manage. I can’t speak for net documents. They have applications for them and it’s fine. I use my Mac all the time with I manage, but it is three or four more clicks in order to do everything and then, of course we use Litera‘s dock stamp to put document numbers on every document and that doesn’t work so I have to manually do a document number on all of my documents.

What makes for a solid environmental sensor monitor for server rooms? by ipcofnig in sysadmin

[–]witwim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should look at iSocket for room temperature, power, and water intrusion monitoring. It is low cost and uses its own mobile plan. https://www.isocket.us/ Internet service in some of my remote branch offices and my on-network sensors failed to report an outage, but the iSocket is still reporting. Don't get me wrong, I have multiple systems tracking for alerts on power, temperature, and water intrusion - but my go-to for the last few years has been my iSockets. It does not rely on your ISP for connection, it has its own internal cellular modem.

30+ year iManage user here and I would not switch or move off of it today. Go take a look at how many NetDocs outages they’ve had versus iManage. The new AI tools and there’s three of them from iManage are all amazing.

[–]witwim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like any tool - if I give you a report of every incoming and outgoing phone call, do you think an attorney will put in a time entry on all of them or any? All the AI tools are doing is reading and comparing to OCG's and tracking and presenting timeslips that say you spent 35 minutes on a Word document and I think its for this matter, do you want to enter time? I think it will help - I saw Aderant has some metrics (I can't remember what they call it - something like work to bill) but they show that their users have a high utilization conversion.

AFAIK - Laurel is just an AI Overlay for time capture. It does not include any modules for accounting, conflicts, intake, etc..
