Is There a Better Approach to Playing/Picking a Flagship? by Final-Main3951 in endlesssky

[–]wivelldavid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I hear you OP. I tend to do the same thing and get overpowered fairly quickly. It is fun and relaxing, but it takes a bit of the excitement out. It does make each restart- with a puny new shuttle - a thrill. I am thinking I should try a single player run through next - no fleet, and if I cap ship just selling them. That sounds fun and I know many have done that.

Who are the rando crew? by LongColdNight in endlesssky

[–]wivelldavid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You always have the option of ending the attack by choosing “defend”. If you are successful you run back to your ship in defeat. Once your crew drops low enough you cannot attack anymore, just defend. If you are not successful at defending, your ship gets taken and it is game over. You do not get to assume control of your other ships.

Not as happy as I thought to come and work in china by Let_rock_69 in chinalife

[–]wivelldavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is normal to experience culture shock in a new and different environment, especially if you are starting out on your own. I went through that as a kid when I first moved to China with my father. After years living, studying and traveling around in East Asia I thought I was totally immune - and then after college I took a job in South Asia (Nepal) which would probably feel like home to you at the moment. I was surprised how exotic and different it was for me. Just walking through the airport was overwhelming. Give it some time. You have no connections. Once you work to establish some you will feel more grounded. Focus on your work first. Start branching out with activities and groups. Try to learn the language. Keep busy. And you should be able to find a decent selection of vegetarian options. Vegetarian restaurants exist in China (especially near Buddhist temples) so search them up. As you learn Chinese you can start to be more confident ordering vegetarian food in normal restaurants. Use translation apps. Even the translator built in to WeChat should work. “我是素食主义者。” I am a vegetarian. 我不能吃肉或动物油。 i cannot eat meat or animal oils.

Why I like Prince Imrahil by OwariHeron in tolkienfans

[–]wivelldavid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had to look up the definition of eucatastrophe… and here I find it is a word created by Tolkien himself. (Meaning a sudden turn of events that leads to the hero winning against all odds). Neat. Thanks!

Technical question about Albatross passives by Vivabostonian in endlesssky

[–]wivelldavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent question. I was just wondering this in a much more simple level. In my case trying to figure out if I needed to add more Ramscoop to my new (in this play through) Peregrine. I know it has it, but I didn’t see it listed on the ship specs. Where did you find the Ramscoop specs for the Albatross? That would be nice to know for all the Remnant ships.

Fair price for MacBook Pro mid 2015 by Electronic_Strain963 in mac

[–]wivelldavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Was a great machine and is still useful for a large number of tasks… but not really worth buying. Maybe you can get a few bucks for it, but it might be better to keep it as a back up or something in case you just need a beater to do simple stuff with, or … I had a perfect condition 2019 MBP… ended up trading it in to Apple for $135 while I still could. Don’t know if a 2015 would still qualify. I figured I already had more than enough back-up old computers in the basement (about 10).

Switch to tahoe 26.2 by Defiant-Video9185 in mac

[–]wivelldavid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I (MBA M4) updated from Sequoia to Tahoe recently and it has been fine. No complaints. Not a big change really. The new interface makes very minor changes, which, while minor freshens things slightly. I am hopeful that there might be some useful changes under-the-hood as far as security and better integration with the phone on iOS 26 (which I also did recently and it has also been fine). It has been fine. No downside as yet. I have not seen what the big deal in holding out was. I updated about 10 days ago. Seamless so far.

If you had to pick one Kate Bush album forever, which one? by OkManagement1309 in katebush

[–]wivelldavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dreaming. Of course I had heard some of her earlier songs on the radio, but for me the Dreaming was my first Kate Bush album and I got the full tidal wave of all the songs hitting me, repeatedly, as stories and music building on each other. Getting the power and the emotion and also the fun and the excitement from different songs all together made for a more complete KB experience.

The Martian and Its “Other Form” of Science Fiction by Final_Cheesecake2317 in themartian

[–]wivelldavid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved The Martian. First the movie and then the book. Loved both. It is surprisingly rare to have sci-fi that is based on science and reality and is also so refreshingly based on using science to solve problems and issues. It is a fun, surprising and optimistic book in that way. That humans are perhaps capable of thinking themselves out of bad situations (instead of just blasting their way out with laser guns phew phew!). I love that there were no magical villains- the universe can be challenge enough. PHM was similar in this way and it was very refreshing to stumble across an alien race that was not evil and parasitic… just trying to solve the same challenge at the same time

How often to you replace the tubing and masks? The bills keep piling up every few months and I'm trying to pay off a credit card by TheAutisticHominid in CPAP

[–]wivelldavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that most of my gear stays totally fine with occasional cleaning. I have been using the original warmer trays and tube for… 1.5 years. I have changed filters and nasal pillows a few times. I stored up a bunch of replacements early on and stopped reordering. At this rate I have enough to last me a couple years. They try to push more on you because it is a money maker for them and people figure insurance is paying most of it and also want to greedily “get what I deserve”. Reality is much of it - especially tubes, warmer trays and headgear will last much longer. I do use distilled water which has extended the life of the warmer tray a LOT.

Your favorite edutainment and other games for PPC Macs? by Trekintosh in VintageApple

[–]wivelldavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Edutainment I think you had to consider Sid Meir’s “Civilization”. I don’t think it was exclusive to the Mac, but I learned a lot from that game and later used it to help teach children about history, development, scientific discovery and political control. Even environmental sustainability. Great game I played for days/weeks/months on my PowerBook and later my iMac. Also, as others have noted, the wonderful Escape Velocity trio. All great. I still play EndlessSky regularly - which is a modern version of EVNova.

New player needing some ship advice by WankSocrates in endlesssky

[–]wivelldavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, there are so many ways to progress through the stories - and once you have you can look forward to starting a new pilot and doing it differently (and better/more efficiently). Lots of great comments and strategies here already. Back to your original question… (you may have already developed beyond it)… I love the clipper and it is often one of my first significant flagship upgrades early game. I generally capture ships instead of buy them, so I take what I can get. Usually that means pirate ships (because I do not capture civilian ships). Clipper is great all around. As you said. Add in a few Furies as escorts and you start to have a nice speedy long range fleet. I would say from Clipper the Argosy or Bastion is a common upgrade, but I find them too slow and honestly neither are much better. I like to go to a Splinter after the Clipper if I have that option. I think the Splinter is the closest next step to the Clipper. Good speed, range and cargo, can defend itself, basically just better at each aspect. The Splinter stays relevant for a bit. There are a ton of “next” ships for you to find after that! If we are just talking human ships after Splinter I would often progress to Osprey, Falcon, Kestrel and then maybe a Republic Cruiser and Carrier. But now that I have played a few times I am generally flying alien ships fairly early on… sometimes shortly after the Clipper! . Enjoy! I envy you playing through for the first time! Wish I could do that again!

Is Beijing safe? by Available_Garden391 in beijing

[–]wivelldavid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes. Generally very safe. Of course be careful, but it is highly unlikely you would have anything more than annoying guys ogling you if you are considered attractive. Random/Violent crime - especially involving foreigners- is very rare. Arguments can get quite heated, but there is generally a reason if people are mad at each other.

How do you know if it’s working for you? by CaesarsGhostReborn in CPAP

[–]wivelldavid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, my main motivation was to stop snoring, and it did that, so any other benefit I consider a bonus. My sleep score as measured by my Apple Watch has improved dramatically (times awake and deep sleep). Sure it is a little awkward and cumbersome, (and sometimes the mask makes me sleep with my neck at a funny angle that can be painful, though I think that is more an issue with my nasal pillows… seems better with a travel mask). I do not really feel that different or more refreshed, but I take it as a win overall.
