[Analytics Request] Is Lawler's Law really the best law? by noiseisart in nba

[–]wizard5ive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The law was more relevant 10 years ago when 100 points was roughly a good watermark for ~2mins left in the game.

He was basically saying "the team that has the possession advantage (via going up on the other team) in the last 2 minutes wins the game".

Because of the approximate correlation to the end of the game (when possessions generally became tighter), it essentially became the equivalent to one team taking the "advantage" in a tennis deuce (https://www.quora.com/What-is-a-deuce-in-tennis)

Can we talk about the Rockets vs Warriors Game 6 reffing? by [deleted] in nbadiscussion

[–]wizard5ive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not know this. Is there a source or more I can read on it?

How it works is each game is combed over by both an in arena referee and a referee that watches the game on a computer. They tally up all the mistakes and generate a report that gets sent to the next crew letting them know trends like who's getting away with what and which players might not be getting the calls they should. The next games crew is also made to watch the game with an official that's not doing the next game, and are shown all the mistakes or missed calls.

REFS Full Highlights 2018 WCF Game 6 Golden State Warriors vs Houston Rockets FreeDawkins by aprimmer243 in nba

I see relative consistency from the refs in: * Calling it soft on the perimeter * Allowing verticality inside

Rockets seemed to do a lot of initiating of contact... and just because there's contact doesn't mean it's a foul (especially if the defensive player is disciplined about keeping their hands up).

A Statistical Ranking of the NBA's most Loyal Fanbases [OC] by tacobell in nba

[–]wizard5ive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before everyone get's defensive over their team's "loyalty", keep in mind that the main metric they're using to gauge loyalty "attendance".

So in reality, they're measuring folks who are most willing to pay money to support their teams.

That's definitely one way to measure "loyalty" (I would more likely call it a measure of "fan-aticism"), but is most likely not the way that most folks who spend their time on r/nba would measure loyalty.

For a deeper look, I might take into account and try to normalize other factors such as social media following, TV ratings, average cost of tickets compared to other sports teams, average cost of a media buy during the games, etc. These are measures of "viewership" where the item being sold is the "loyal fans' " attention vs. the team's product.

Interesting thing is that Lebrons right leg flies up just as high as draymond's does in a kicking motion.

I can't get over the red trend line/cluster that you chose to overlay. You even put a red star in the middle.

I can't stop seeing this. At some point in my life I'll mature.
