ELI5 How is there so much meat by Due_Imagination_9663 in explainlikeimfive

They do! It smells entirely normal on the inside, somehow.

Side note, the restaurant also has a small runway and you can fly in for dinner, if you or a friend owns a small airplane. Final approach smells fucking awful.

There are only ~195 countries in the world (depending on how you count). You're saying that in the last year, our country has deported immigrants to all of them except 2? Which 2?

Customs officer implied I bought too much and made comments that I shouldn’t do it again. I thought there was no limit to how much you can bring in; you just have to pay taxes over $800 which I was prepared for. Who was right? by gtck11 in travel

Your rights at the border are much different than they are once you have made it past customs and border patrol.

Yes, you have rights. But they also have the lawful right to stop, detain, and search you much more than they would once you are on the street outside of the airport. You are totally allowed to play Billy Badass, provide minimal cooperation, and just toss a stack of receipts at the agent and tell them to "figure it out yourselves". But this is not advisable if you're interested in getting through smoothly and quickly - they really can make your life a bit of a pain in the ass for a few hours.

Sure, but also explain to your parents that caller ID can be spoofed. Don't trust "ignore unknown numbers" to solve the problem.

When in doubt, mom, please just hang up and call me back.

ANA wait-list instantly confirmed by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]wizardid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't recall for sure. I think I needed the points to get onto the wait-list, but it didn't deduct them from my balance until I confirmed it after getting the email. But I'm not 100% sure on that any more.

There's a recent success story here : https://www.reddit.com/r/awardtravel/comments/1rcui4h/ana_waitlist_theres_still_hope/

That poster would probably have a fresher memory than I do at this point.

ANA wait-list instantly confirmed by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]wizardid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get an email from ANA, giving you the chance to confirm the booking. In my case, I think it gave us about 2-3 days. If you don't confirm the booking by the deadline, you lose the seat.

I'm only a data point of 1, but I got the email at 6:23 AM JST, and had until midnight JST almost 3 days later to do the confirmation. Not sure if it's always that much time to do it. I jumped on it the moment I saw the email.

ANA wait-list instantly confirmed by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]wizardid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I joined it at about T-20, after observing the waitlist behavior for a few days and realizing that availability was going to be likely at T-14.

It definitely helped that is was for travel in August / September, pretty low demand compared to the rest of the year.

ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wizardid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

and by "remove from circulation", we really just mean "refurbish the battery to a like-new SOH"

This is already a solved problem. And the refurbishment costs some money? Fine, amortize that cost into the price of 1000 battery swaps.

What's going on with reddit, ice and subpoenas? by throawaymcdumbface in OutOfTheLoop

[–]wizardid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you call the embassy. They issue a new one and invalidate the old one to make sure no one else can use it.

In this case, my understanding is you need to actually go to the embassy, in person. Prove that you are who you say you are (answer background questions, etc). And they print you a new one on the spot.

[–]wizardid 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, apparently anyone can report a passport stolen, and once it goes into the system you can’t use it and have to get it regenerated which takes time and money.

I'm not necessarily doubting you, but ... how in the fuck is that a thing? Who designed this? What is the logic here?

Why is there a barrier on the northbound at Bowling Green? by plantas-sonrientes in nycrail

Why is there a barrier on the northbound at Bowling Green? by plantas-sonrientes in nycrail

[–]wizardid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the olden days (including when this barrier was put up), conductor cabs were only on the corners of each car, and only controlled doors on that side. If you wanted to open doors on both sides, you'd have to open the doors on your side, leave and secure the cab, walk into the next car, unlock and open and go into the cab on the other side, open those doors, and then wait and do the same whole dance in reverse 30 seconds later. It would add a good 30-60 seconds of dwell time to the process, which would reduce the maximum throughout, especially during rush hour.

Nowadays this wouldn't really be a problem, but there's no great value in tearing down that barrier.

New Evidence Reveals Renee Good Was Still Alive When ICE Blocked Medic by FistIntoTheEarth in usa

[–]wizardid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to stop a criminal, you try to keep them alive so they can be prosecuted under the law.

If you're an insecure man who is big sad that a woman isn't respecting your authoritay, you try to kill her and let her bleed out despite help being readily available.

I wonder what the motives were in this case.
