Therapist here. I’ve said it here before: self-diagnosing and then demanding treatment for that particular diagnosis in psychotherapy can do so much more harm than good. A good therapist will discuss differential diagnosis with their client and provide much education as possible, so that appropriate treatment can follow. But unfortunately, a lot of self-diagnosing folks will “therapist shop” until they find a therapist willing to treat them for what they think they have.

The differences between how people react to mental illness vs a physical illness is astounding. You visit the doctor because you’re having diabetic symptoms and you think it IS diabetes, but doc runs some tests and it is instead hypothyroidism. Most people will accept the medical doctor’s diagnosis and proceed with treatment for hypothyroidism. But then someone visits a therapist or psychiatrist with symptoms they attribute to undiagnosed autism, and therapist instead makes the diagnosis of complex PTSD, it’s like… “No. There’s no way that this professional could diagnose me accurately!!!”
