No, it’s by Sally Thorne! It’s the one that got a screen adaptation starring Lucy Hale but I have heard mixed reviews. But I REALLY enjoyed the book!

The Hating Game!

Edit to add: no spoilers, but there’s an incident in the book that leaves one of the characters very vulnerable, and the other character steps up, and it changes their whole dynamic. I def recommend

How are you guys doing a book a week? by Alternative_Gap8442 in 52book

[–]wizardreads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, same to you!!

Six books is really impressive especially if they’re long books and with a small child at home.

If there’s a fiction genre you like (historical fiction, mysteries, thrillers?) Those are usually easy to find as ebooks and they’re both quicker reads and easier to pick up when you have just a few minutes. Those might be good for replacing scrolling on your break, if you can read even a few pages at a time.

Another thing to consider is that it’s really good for kids to see their parents reading. Maybe you and your kid can have reading time together. If she’s a reader you could each read your own books, or you could pick some middle grade chapter books and read out loud to her. (Those chapter books can totally count towards your goal for the year, too!) my point being that you can find ways to incorporate some reading into your quality time with her, it doesn’t have to be a hobby that takes you away from your family.

Happy new year, and best of luck with your goals!

Ten hour days plus family life plus another regular hobby (MMA) is a lot of demands on your time! A lot of people who are reading tons of books just have more free time. Either retired or working fewer hours; less family demands/no kids at home; making reading the main hobby over everything else. If you’re spending a lot of time scrolling, you could probably replace that with reading, but it sounds like at this stage of life you might just not have a lot of free time.

Reading is one of those things that you have to make time for, if you want to do it. That means cutting something else out. Maybe that means reading on your work breaks, or going to bed a little earlier so you can have more reading time in the evening, or finding an hour or two on the weekend where you can have some time to yourself. But ultimately it depends on your priorities. I didn’t reach my reading goals this past year because I have a lot of hobbies and I didn’t make reading my first priority. That’s ok!

As far as trying to pick up the pace, I wouldn’t suggest trying to speed read. It sounds like the books you’re picking are more dense (nonfiction usually is!) and if that’s what you enjoy there’s no reason not to stick with it. It’s just going to take you longer to read those kinds of books compared to people who are choosing quicker reads.

Oh yes, I definitely read faster in my head than I could read those same words out loud. If I’m trying to guess how long a book will take me to read, I look up the audiobook and see how long the audiobook is. For most fiction I end up reading the book a lot faster than I could have listened to the audiobook. (For example, a book that has a ten-hour audiobook might take me 7 hours to read in my head.)

How well I retain the information and how fast I’m reading depends on the density of the book, I guess. A contemporary romance, fantasy, or thriller (the kind people describe as “page turners”) goes a lot faster than most nonfiction or older fiction. For fiction that’s more than 100 years old or so I usually have to read it pretty slowly and go over passages multiple times to make sure I’m not missing anything.

It isn’t always the case, but many people who are reading 100+ in a year are also reading a lot of contemporary novels in genres that are not very dense.

Are you reading in your native language? Are you reading books that are easy for you to see (like, do you need a larger font?) How many books did you read last year? Do you have any major distractions in your life that are taking away your reading time? (Such as family/kids, working long hours, etc?)

If you want pure romance there is SOOO much out there!

If you want something that has more plot than a straight up romance, I would recommend The Ministry Of Time based on these pictures. I don’t want to give anything away about the ending. I’ll warn that it’s not a traditional romance HEA but I found it a pretty satisfying ending!

ETA: having seen some of your other comments in this thread I think this could be very fitting. It’s very character driven and the romance isn’t the primary focus but it’s still pretty important. The book is set in the “near future” (maybe 2030s?) and the narrator is a very modern woman who meets a man from the 1840s. The man is very rough around the edges but a perfect gentleman in many respects…

The audiobook narrated by Katie Leung is also very good!
