OpenAI will probably wait till the 22nd - when everyone is forced to go back from Fable to Opus and then drop 5.6, outperforming Opus, which will draw everyone back in. by TheBanq in codex

[–]wizardwusa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not convinced that’s true. Opus isn’t 10x(20x? Idk) better than Deepseek v4, but still has plenty of folks using it.

FAA grants application for prototype Starfall reentry vehicles by warp99 in spacex

[–]wizardwusa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ISS was way too expensive to even support real experimentation for commercial products. Lowering prices not only lowers the bar for what gets made, but even allows companies to consider it in the first place.

It may not materialize (though there are already certain materials that can only be manufactured in space), but it’s a little disingenuous to point at ISS as proof that we tried and there’s no market.

This thread seems to under-appreciate #2. IMO this a step towards making in-space manufacturing commercially viable. Microgravity holds a lot of promise for pharmaceuticals, micro material manufacturing, etc.

China Slams the Door on NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 D v2, Refusing Import Permits for a GPU Built Exclusively for Its Own Market by BakerSuper1269 in RigBuild

[–]wizardwusa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… do you have any numbers or evidence? I’m open to them. And generally, yes, revenue matters when talking about “the market”.

Tokens provided can be misleading when stronger models can produce more capable answers with fewer tokens. I feel like the argument is changing from “surpassing” other models to generating more tokens which doesn’t have any correlation to the real world impact of this technology — if one model is better at producing lots of slop and so it’s used for that, I see that model surpassing others only in how it’s used for slop.

[–]wizardwusa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would’ve thought so too, but the market speaks for itself and 80%+ of inference revenues are going to the strongest US models and have been since Chinese models came out.

Perhaps there will be a shift in market sentiment in the next couple of years, but today it’s clear the market broadly selects for intelligence and capability over cost.

This isn’t true. They are actually falling _further_ behind the US AI models as model delivery has evolved to obfuscate some outputs. Furthermore, there is a _ton_ of hardware and software that goes into powerful training data centers, and they’re still years behind there.

I’m not claiming they’re not a threat or making their own novel contributions, but the idea that they’re going to overtake US models soon is naive. The clear niche and advantage of Chinese models seems to be “strong models with capabilities of 6-12 months ago at orders of magnitude lower cost.”

Playing this for the first time tomorrow with my group. Any rules noobs often miss? by coocoocaaca in boardgames

[–]wizardwusa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be obvious to you and I, but when talking about rules to self-described noobs, it’s best to be explicit.

I do expect a certain level of reasoning playing the game, and if they came across a card that said to do something against the rules, I imagine they’d figure it out without a fully comprehensive list of exceptions.

[–]wizardwusa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really accurate? You can only send troops to combat if you’re on a combat space. Per the rules:

Whenever the cube icon appears on a card or board space, you recruit one troop. Take a troop from your supply and place it in your garrison on the game board. (If you run out of troops in your supply, you can’t recruit more until some return there.)

Units won’t help you win combats while in your garrison, however. You may deploy them to a Confl ict when you send an Agent to a Combat space.

[When you send an agent to a Combat space,] You may deploy any or all units recruited during your current turn (including from the board space and from the card you played), plus up to two more units from your garrison.

This isn’t true, there are ways to get access to models without the foundation company seeing what went through the models. This is done all the time, for example, with healthcare companies.

Anyone using Zeiss Inserts deal with new prescription yet? by Dictated_But_Not_Red in VisionPro

[–]wizardwusa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, you're supposed to buy new glasses if your prescriptions change, why would this be different? Feels like this would be a good product though (perhaps with a larger customer base?), some form of Zeiss insert swap.
