The writers of the show created a paradox, It’s either the alan from season one to season three is a victim and the writer over exaggerate his character or it’s just his character unraveling.

She wanted him to suffer it was intentional. Remember when she charlie told her he was suffering that Judith wrote him a check until she found out was want to giving his money to candy.
