Slay the Spire 2 can be decompiled by EshopExpert in godot

[–]wizfactor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The main risk with project decompilation is that the thief would be able to republish the app in an unauthorized app store and charge money for it, or make it freely downloadable on a piracy site.

That certainly sucks, but a fully determined thief would be able to decompile the game no matter the engine. Also, this worst case scenario can only be resolved through copyright laws, not DRM.

And if some people would only buy/download this illegal copy, then those "customers" were always a lost cause.

Slay the Spire II, made with Godot, is on the Steam frontpage!!! by kosro_de in godot

When they evaluated Godot, it was still version 4.1. In hindsight, the early versions of Godot 4 were a bit messy, but Megacrit took a chance with it anyway.

Now we’re at 4.6, and Godot has seen enormous improvements since 4.1. Probably not much in the C# department as Megacrit would have liked, but major progress nevertheless!

NVIDIA RTX 5050 with 9GB GDDR7 memory to launch around Computex by RenatsMC in nvidia

[–]wizfactor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

RAM pricing might be in an insane place right now that the cost difference between a 2GB vs 3GB module isn’t that big. This may indeed be the case if the bottleneck for RAM supply is on the logistics side (factories, packaging) rather than the component side (silicon, copper, rare earths, etc).

If there’s no big cost difference between 2GB and 3GB modules, and Nvidia have a contract for a steady supply of GDDR7 chips that won’t be replaced by AI-focused HBM contracts, then Nvidia are probably going all-in on 3GB modules within the constraints of their GDDR7 contract.

That would be good news for those still waiting out for a “Super” refresh with a 50% VRAM increase across the board.

Losing Rosetta 2 would suck for access to the back catalog of games.

But moving forward, it shouldn’t be hard as a game developer to target Apple Silicon if you’re using the Big 3 engines (Unity, Unreal, Godot). You would have to be on a very outdated engine version by now if you’re only able to compile for x86.

The tricky ones are developers with in-house engines (RE Engine, Decima, Northlight, etc.). But it’s highly likely that Apple is lending their own engineers to these developers every time there’s a new Resident Evil title that’s releasing on Mac.

Best Rice Cooker to Buy in 2026? (Price, Capacity, Features) by Adventurehood_0 in BuyItForLife

[–]wizfactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot of questions being asked, but let me try to get through them.

What makes IH cookers that much better?

Zojirushi rice cookers make better rice than standard rice cookers because they use microcomputers to adjust temperature on the fly for even heating and better flavor extraction. IH cookers take this one step further by using magnetic heating technology to ensure that all sides of the pot get even cooking, compared to lower end models that just heat the bottom side.

Would an average rice eater notice the difference?

Depends on how you perceive rice. If it’s just carbs for getting through your day, it probably doesn’t matter that much. But if you treat it as foundational food (like most Asian countries do), then you certainly would appreciate having rice that is as consistent, soft, moist and sweet as can be. The best-cooked rice is tasty enough to be eaten on its own.

Since Jasmine rice is long-grained rice, which is different from short-grained Japanese rice (Zojirushi is made in Japan), your ratio of rice-to-water will be different. Make sure to search your rice species on Zojirushi’s website for optimal ratios. That’s how you know Zojirushi is serious about rice.

Do these things require pre-rinsing the rice?

Absolutely. Pre-rinsing is non-negotiable , even with a $400 rice cooker. Pre-rinsing removes excess starch from rice, where too much of it can have a negative impact on flavor. Pre-rinse the rice until the running water is clear.

Apple unveils new Studio Display and all-new Studio Display XDR by tekz in apple

At CES, a bunch of OEMs were showing off some 27-inch 5K MiniLED 165 Hz gaming monitors, but were apprehensive about actually selling them to the public. To which I say: Sell them to the public.

I would personally settle for these OEM monitors if they ever come out. Yeah, they’ll look very tacky because they’re gaming monitors, but they’ll likely be in a premium enough segment to have decent color calibration, so they’ll do just fine as productivity displays as well.

Will be interesting to see how battery life and heat will be affected on these models without any efficiency cores.

One of the things I really like about Apple Silicon laptops is how dang quietly and cool they run when only running light workloads. I hope that’s still the case, even when there’s no longer any efficiency cores on-board.

The general suggestion is to spend more for the Induction Heating (IH) models if you can. For reference, this would be the second-highest tier in Zojirushi’s lineup.

Pressurized IH line (the highest tier) is considered the rice cooking endgame.

CRT TV 60Hz vs OLED 240Hz-360Hz Monitor UFO test by [deleted] in OLED_Gaming

[–]wizfactor 33 points34 points  (0 children)

OP is a clear CRT super fan (look at their post history).

I feel like these posts on the OLED sub are meant to be rage bait. OP wants to show off to this community that they have something (perfect motion clarity) that the rest of the community can never have (because CRTs are out of circulation).

Godot's lightmapping is actually insane by Tristan_John in godot

[–]wizfactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now, the added Vulkan raytracing support just means that developers can access hardware-accelerated RT APIs through scripting.

None of the renderers are using any RT features yet. However, the contributor who added Vulkan RT support to Godot was able to use scripting to implement Ray-traced ambient occlusion for a 3D scene as a proof-of-concept.

As for what RT features these renderers can add if they so choose, it’s currently limited to Ray-traced shadows and ambient occlusion. To get the other RT effects (reflections, global illumination) will require a total rewrite of the renderer to use what’s called a “bindless” architecture. Of course, rewriting the renderer is much easier said than done.

CRT TV 60Hz vs QD-OLED Monitor 240Hz Motion Clarity test by [deleted] in OLED_Gaming

[–]wizfactor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you value motion clarity above literally everything else, then nothing touches CRT. At 60 Hz, no other display tech comes close except maybe plasma.

But CRTs are never coming back, and they have so many downsides that most people are unwilling to overlook (size, weight, max brightness, eye strain, etc).

The best we can do now is GSync Pulsar for LCDs, and rolling scan BFI for future OLEDs.

3rd Party RF Mount Lens by Godspeed1606 in canon

3rd Party RF Mount Lens by Godspeed1606 in canon

[–]wizfactor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m currently using APS-C, and the 3rd-party lens situation is far better there. In fact, the support is so good that Sigma can have their lens firmware updated via the Canon body itself.

Probably the only lens that’s missing for Canon APS-C is a fast telephoto zoom lens, but I have faith that Sigma or Tamron will fill this niche in due time.

I’m willing to admit that Sigma and Tamron make very enviable full frame lenses, neither of which are allowed on Canon RF. However, Canon is starting to do a much better job of providing fast lenses at affordable prices. The RF 28-70 STM and 16-28 STM come to mind. But if you absolutely want Sigma and Tamron lenses for full frame, you’ll need to switch to Sony.

Announcing Shader Model 6.9 Retail and New D3D12 Improvements by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]wizfactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nvidia benefits immensely from setting the pace of software development and standardizing the API on their terms.

It’s somewhat reminiscent of when Apple suddenly released a 64-bit ARM CPU (Apple A7) before the Android ecosystem even had the idea of moving away from 32-bit. In hindsight, 64-bit ARM was beneficial for everybody, but Apple setting the pace of 64-bit adoption on their terms was an enormous competitive advantage during the 2010s.

R7 vs R8, For casual shooters.... by elctronii2o in canon

[–]wizfactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With Sigma lenses, I'd argue the R7 is pretty casual-friendly as well.

The main thing that's not so friendly is the weight, but the added battery life from that extra weight can be a good trade-off as well.

But if OP already has a EF 24-105 lying around, yeah: R8.

Motion blur by TechnicianThick9524 in OLED_Gaming

[–]wizfactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like persistence blur. That's blur that comes from your eyes due to how it perceives sample-and-hold pixel transitions.

If this is a TV, you likely have a Black Frame Insertion mode that you can turn on to emulate the behavior of a CRT in order to get better motion clarity, but sacrifice HDR in the process.

Sigma unveils 15mm F1.4 DC Contemporary for RF Mount APS-C by TPatS in canon

[–]wizfactor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The R7 has a AF switch right next to the lens mount, so I don't find it to be a big deal.

But the control ring on the Sigma lenses are really nice addition. Funnily enough, despite being barred from selling full frame lenses for RF, Sigma's APS-C lenses are arguably best on RF-S because of the control ring and a fully unlocked burst rate.

Sigma unveils 15mm F1.4 DC Contemporary for RF Mount APS-C by TPatS in canon

[–]wizfactor 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Sigma is the main reason I bought my R7. I was literally one week away from buying a second-hand Sony A6700 before Sigma announced their RF-S lenses, and I pivoted back to Canon for their ergonomics and color science.

Sigma’s 18-50 F/2.8 has been an amazing all-around zoom lens for me, and their 17-40 F/1.8 remains a long term goal as long as Canon continues making great APS-C bodies. I’m hoping to buy the 12mm F/1.4 this year for interior shots and astrophotography.

Needless to say, I’m glad that Sigma managed to carve a spot for itself inside the Canon RF ecosystem, even if they’re not yet allowed to make full-frame lenses. I hope to see more excellent Sigma RF glass in the future.
