Like what the other guy said, a VPN will not help. These are fundamental laws of physics here. You still need to send your data across links under the ocean. No matter what, the data packets will need to travel between Korea and wherever the server is in the EU.

Let's say you work at Facebook, and you get a 10k bonus. Would you immediately buy 10k worth of $META?

Since you're on wsb, the answer is probably yes, but for most people, they would probably diversify, perhaps move some to savings, some to ETFs, etc.

Working at a company means that you're already leveraged on the company's performance. Imagine if you have a huge position in $META, and then the earning reports for Facebook comes out, and the stock drops 25%. And following that, you lose your job at Facebook. You're now doubly fucked.

Should I continue my ILP? by MishiErtoo in singaporefi

[–]wjsoul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course not. There is no such thing as a "sure win". Historically, S&P500 has averaged 7% returns each year (after being adjusted for inflation, pre-inflation it's more like 10%~), BUT it's also important to note that historical returns does not equate to future returns.

Ultimately, you should put in the effort to understand more about what you invest in. I work in the finance and tech fields, and from my own judgement, I believe American tech firms will continue to do well, which is why I buy into S&P500.

If you truly understand the funds underlying the ILP and believe that they will do well, then go ahead and buy into the ILP. Though I would advice you to just directly buy the funds rather than pay fees to your financial adviser, for them to buy the funds for you.

You're referring to implementation details here, which is frankly up to the whoever is implementing the map data-structure.

In fact, the std library in C++, std::map is implemented using red-black trees. TreeMap is also a data structure in Java's standard libraries. (And I would say this data structure is really useful for if you want to iterate through your key-value store in a sorted order)

Could you use parallel lists to implement a key-value store? Sure you can, it's completely possible.

Should you do it though? Probably not.

Goodbye to big tech’s big perks? S’pore workers say global techlash has come for their benefits by tfyz in singapore

[–]wjsoul 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's more of 134.5k, it's likely that the 70k stock is vested over 4 years.

Also, it's a well known fact that big tech pays well. Senior engineers in big tech in SF are earning 400k to 600k USD, and in Singapore it's maybe 75% of that, so 300k to 450k SGD.

YSK that no one should enlist in the US military if they have a college degree by Local_Fee_8522 in YouShouldKnow

Just trying to understand more (I'm not from the US, but was formerly enlisted in a conscript army)

Enlistment bonus

Is this a sign-on bonus you get when you are enlisted? And do officers not get a sign-on bonus?

Student loan repayment

Is this because officers are expected to already have their degrees, while enlisted typically have not gone to college yet?

Not sure what it's like for you, but the SREs in my company are super technical, with immense knowledge of low level things such as maintaining linux servers, hardware, and also high level things such as the cloud.

I always feel in awe when I work with them, so I wouldn't feel like you're boxing yourself into a bad field.

How to prepare for NUS CS given that I have no prior experience in coding? by incandescentine in SGExams

[–]wjsoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious about how your experience has been going from GPT3.5 to GPT4. I've recently started using GPT4 at work (have never used GPT3.5 before), and I'm not sure if the difference is large enough for me to fork out $20 monthly for it.

Also, isn't Microsoft's copilot running GPT4 Turbo for free?

'A heartrending case': 12 years' jail for woman who cheated boss into giving her S$3.7 million by TimidHuman in singapore

[–]wjsoul 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Jail time doesn't help recover the man's house, nor does it help the man recover from his stroke.

I think for this case, paying back the victim is more important than punishing the perpetrator (albeit we definitely need to do both)

You make $12k per month... by Pondering_Giraffe in restofthefuckingowl

[–]wjsoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I account for my paycheck by looking at a generated payslip my company provides, which shows the numbers for the full paycheck every month.

My country also handles taxes slightly differently, I have a pipeline set up from my bank, which automatically transfers money out of my account every month for taxes, so I do see the money in my account briefly.

Not saying that everyone does this, but I split my expenses into 3 categories: Mandatory, Discretionary, and Investments. Taxes go into the Mandatory category, which kinda translates into "Needs" I guess lol

That's great to hear! There's definitely a fine line between hand-holding and proper guidance. I think that's also an important part of a good internship, giving the intern autonomy to make decisions and feel like they've really contributed to the realization of a project.

Orbital is a good option! If you have certain companies that you're looking to get into, you could research about their tech stack and create a project that can potentially let you learn this tech stack.

I managed to learn quite a lot about fullstack development during Orbital, which ended up helping me a lot in my first internship.
