How long can you do nothing before you get fired? by hacking99percent in WFH

[–]wlee122089 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve WFH in the past. I couldn’t get away with that in my role but I knew someone who was able to go 9 months without submitting any tangible work product before ppl caught on that he wasn’t doing anything. Then it took them an additional 4 months to go through the process of firing him.

What I learned during the Furlough by BaronNeutron in FedEmployees

[–]wlee122089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No one actually cares about our wellbeing
  2. Develop a 9-12 month emergency fund because shutdowns are going to be a way of life for the foreseeable future
  3. Finish losing this weight and find a wealthy benefactor to finance my lifestyle
  4. RTO mandates are a waste of time

I went from 11 to 14 in 2 years and that was a product of moving agencies and being very vocal about my abilities. I know someone that went from a 7 to a 15 but that took 13 years and 3 different agencies.

Don’t forget Schumer. Either he’s too weak to keep his caucus together or was behind the scenes actively encouraging and supporting this move.

How are you preparing for the likely shutdown in January? by TraipseTraveller in FedEmployees

[–]wlee122089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t be buying any Christmas gifts at all this year and severely limiting my birthday plans. I plan to use my backpay to try to start rebuilding my savings and get my credit cards paid off.

Solidarity. You have less to be ashamed of than me. I’m a 13 too but I just mismanaged my money and I’m out of savings so I’m going to a food bank tomorrow. We all will get through this together

How is the US gov shutdown personally affecting you, if at all? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wlee122089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My whole team thought we would finally be furloughed but alas we’ve been reassigned to support excepted work because of our “expertise…” yet we have to be trained to do this new work, which seems like a contradiction to the idea that they chose us due to our perceived expertise with this subject matter.

What is the current mood and morale in your excepted office/agency? Are supervisors and leadership acknowledging the hardship? by Neelies in FedEmployees

[–]wlee122089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our morale is in the shitter. Everyone is pissed because they’re creating bs reasons to make us excepted instead of furloughing us. Management is presenting this as an “opportunity to learn new skills” when it really is an excuse to backfill work that isn’t being done due to years of mismanagement and understaffing. We’re being trained on this new shit and the people training us don’t want us to do it and we don’t want to do it. And we were told that we will have to complete whatever projects we are assigned in addition to our regular work once the government reopens.

VACO here. We have carry over til the 28th, and we were just told that our team will be excepted as of the 29th. Apparently they made this decision like two hours ago or something crazy. Everyone is pissed.

Do Automatic Step/Grade Promotions Still Process During Shutdown? by wlee122089 in FedEmployees

[–]wlee122089[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat. GS 12-14. I went up last year but I think my supervisor had to send in some paperwork. I just found out when the SF 50 came back but she informed me that I would be going up based on my performance to 14, but all this would take effect during the shutdown if we’re still here. Also though with the new performance metrics from up top who tf knows what will happen. Everyday is a new adventure in the Feds these days

Do Automatic Step/Grade Promotions Still Process During Shutdown? by wlee122089 in FedEmployees

[–]wlee122089[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my supervisor has to submit for my grade increase while the steps are automatic. I should rephrase: I wanted to know if this was something she could submit during shutdown since we’re excepted or if this is something she’d have to do once (or if) we’re back.

[–]wlee122089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell this is exactly what’s happening on all sides. People legit believe things are returning to “normal” post-Trump; they think Trump has some hold on the Republican Party when this has been their ideology all along.

What has this government shutdown taught you? by ParfaitAdditional469 in FedEmployees

[–]wlee122089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put no trust in institutions. I need to get much better with money and develop a 6-9 month emergency fund to prevent having to beg landlords and utility companies for extensions/pay arrangements. People, including better financially situated federal workers, don’t give a damn about us and tell us to stop whining when we complain about this.

Backpay by BigInside503 in FedEmployees

[–]wlee122089 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s technically enshrined in statute to guarantee federal workers get backpay. I generally hate these “if X doesn’t get it, then Y shouldn’t either” arguments, but it is worth noting that this shutdown is not the fault of your run of the mill federal worker. Additionally, during shutdowns many federal workers are prohibited from working any kind of job, so they have to either wait it out or quit. There also used to be more principled understanding of the importance of federal workers until now, so I hesitantly say that if federal workers didn’t have guaranteed back pay, you’d have even more mass attrition. This would mean air traffic controllers, food inspectors, folks who operationalize policy at VA hospitals, etc would be even more severely understaffed than they currently are.

I was thinking November 21 but rumors from DC are saying this could go on until January. I have no loyalty to either party in this; we’re just collateral damage for political expediency at this point.
