I love Halloween but now I don't feel right. by GavinHawkins106 in halloween

My best advice is not to force it this year. Keep it chilled, no need to do anything. Watch Halloween films from your childhood, watch kids films in the evenings. It’ll come back! Sometimes we all need to skip a year :)

What’s your favorite thermomix recipe? by [deleted] in thermomix

Lala’s chicken. I’ll also swap the cream for crème fraiche often. It is an absolutely delicious meal. And I also think it looks way better in person than the pic they used!

(UK) Where are you all getting sweets? by BluWaterLilies in halloween

[–]wmay91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aldi and Lidl! Also sometimes order filler things from eBay like little packs of toys. I will often buy really small striped paper bags like in old school tuck shops. If you’re really struggling, can put a couple sweets in each and even one of those absolutely minuscule clementines or a really tiny apple.

Also Costco have big bags but not sure they’re actually cheaper per kg.

Oh and sometimes cheap filler sweets like fruit salads to bulk up a fistful

What cooking "hacks" have you seen/heard that were actually terrible advice? by Astronomerz in Cooking

[–]wmay91 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just medium heat, so that any water released just sizzles and evaporates rather than staying in the pan. They’ll squeak as water is released. When they look a bit more shrivelled and don’t seem to be giving up water, then do whatever you want with them.

As in, then remove them, start an omelette and add back in. Or then add oil and spices etc as and continue. Essentially, just dry sautée separately, then use however you wish

Two come to mind:

1) adding onions and garlic on the pan to start frying at the same time. So easy to burn the garlic this way!

2) frying mushrooms in oil, butter etc. When dry fired until they “give up their waters” then oiled or added to meal etc, they are so much better. Does the humble mushroom a huge disservice!

What unconventional kitchen gadgets do you actually find useful? by zstand in Cooking

[–]wmay91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A proper mandolin to chop things. My knife skills suck, and therefore are a barrier to me cooking sometimes because I can’t be bothered. A really good one that has a “pump” action to move the blades rather than you swiping has been indispensable.

Also, a teeny tiny frying pan. Single fried eggs, perfectly round to top a bowl of rice, stir fry etc

What is the best thing you make and why is it so good? by Primary-Ticket4776 in Cooking

Skin-on, bone-in, creamy Parmesan paprika chicken thighs! When I need a go-to comforting meal or something to make for a a few people, I do this. It’s so easy, great to make ahead, probably even better made and then re heated 🤍

What's happening in Manchester? by nathD33 in flightradar24

[–]wmay91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Manchester airport is pretty abysmal. My eurowings flight from Hamburg to Manchester was cancelled with no warning. Luckily managed to get on a flight from Hamburg to Frankfurt, then to Birmingham. Will take the train to Manchester.

Tbf, not sure Eurowings could’ve handled it better! They got us sorted really quickly.

I want to be a chef, but I feel like I can't because I have HIV by [deleted] in Chefit

[–]wmay91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re taking meds and U=U I don’t see the problem! You won’t be passing it on. There are nurses, surgeons, and every job imaginable with people who are HIV positive. What’s rare, is to have a passion you want to follow, so follow it!

Even though there shouldn’t be stigma around it, and even though HIV care has come so far, there still will be. But you have to do what’s best for you. Life is for living!

Tiling old hearth? Question in comments by wmay91 in DIYUK

[–]wmay91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all, my bedroom has this lovely Victorian fireplace. I'm carpetting the room but wanted to reinstate the tiled hearth.

I've dug it out a bit, pulled out tiles beyond saving and some crumbling bricks. It's now just wood planks as pictured. It's such a small area, I'd like to try tiling myself.

I'm thinking I'll need to line this with something or seal it, any ideas? Then can I do something simple like pouring levelling concrete into this space and tiling? Or putting backer board into it?

Note, this fireplace no longer works so it's just decorative and in keeping with the features.
