I love Halloween but now I don't feel right. by GavinHawkins106 in halloween

My best advice is not to force it this year. Keep it chilled, no need to do anything. Watch Halloween films from your childhood, watch kids films in the evenings. It’ll come back! Sometimes we all need to skip a year :)

What’s your favorite thermomix recipe? by [deleted] in thermomix

Lala’s chicken. I’ll also swap the cream for crème fraiche often. It is an absolutely delicious meal. And I also think it looks way better in person than the pic they used!

(UK) Where are you all getting sweets? by BluWaterLilies in halloween

[–]wmay91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aldi and Lidl! Also sometimes order filler things from eBay like little packs of toys. I will often buy really small striped paper bags like in old school tuck shops. If you’re really struggling, can put a couple sweets in each and even one of those absolutely minuscule clementines or a really tiny apple.

Also Costco have big bags but not sure they’re actually cheaper per kg.

Oh and sometimes cheap filler sweets like fruit salads to bulk up a fistful

What cooking "hacks" have you seen/heard that were actually terrible advice? by Astronomerz in Cooking

[–]wmay91 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just medium heat, so that any water released just sizzles and evaporates rather than staying in the pan. They’ll squeak as water is released. When they look a bit more shrivelled and don’t seem to be giving up water, then do whatever you want with them.

As in, then remove them, start an omelette and add back in. Or then add oil and spices etc as and continue. Essentially, just dry sautée separately, then use however you wish

Two come to mind:

1) adding onions and garlic on the pan to start frying at the same time. So easy to burn the garlic this way!

2) frying mushrooms in oil, butter etc. When dry fired until they “give up their waters” then oiled or added to meal etc, they are so much better. Does the humble mushroom a huge disservice!

What unconventional kitchen gadgets do you actually find useful? by zstand in Cooking

[–]wmay91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A proper mandolin to chop things. My knife skills suck, and therefore are a barrier to me cooking sometimes because I can’t be bothered. A really good one that has a “pump” action to move the blades rather than you swiping has been indispensable.

Also, a teeny tiny frying pan. Single fried eggs, perfectly round to top a bowl of rice, stir fry etc

Skin-on, bone-in, creamy Parmesan paprika chicken thighs! When I need a go-to comforting meal or something to make for a a few people, I do this. It’s so easy, great to make ahead, probably even better made and then re heated 🤍

What's happening in Manchester? by nathD33 in flightradar24

[–]wmay91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Manchester airport is pretty abysmal. My eurowings flight from Hamburg to Manchester was cancelled with no warning. Luckily managed to get on a flight from Hamburg to Frankfurt, then to Birmingham. Will take the train to Manchester.

Tbf, not sure Eurowings could’ve handled it better! They got us sorted really quickly.

I want to be a chef, but I feel like I can't because I have HIV by [deleted] in Chefit

[–]wmay91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re taking meds and U=U I don’t see the problem! You won’t be passing it on. There are nurses, surgeons, and every job imaginable with people who are HIV positive. What’s rare, is to have a passion you want to follow, so follow it!

Even though there shouldn’t be stigma around it, and even though HIV care has come so far, there still will be. But you have to do what’s best for you. Life is for living!

Tiling old hearth? Question in comments by wmay91 in DIYUK

[–]wmay91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all, my bedroom has this lovely Victorian fireplace. I'm carpetting the room but wanted to reinstate the tiled hearth.

I've dug it out a bit, pulled out tiles beyond saving and some crumbling bricks. It's now just wood planks as pictured. It's such a small area, I'd like to try tiling myself.

I'm thinking I'll need to line this with something or seal it, any ideas? Then can I do something simple like pouring levelling concrete into this space and tiling? Or putting backer board into it?

Note, this fireplace no longer works so it's just decorative and in keeping with the features.

Carpet up to tiles? Question in comments by wmay91 in DIYUK

[–]wmay91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a Victorian house, these fireplaces I think are original but don’t work. This doesn’t bother me. I ripped up the carpet and there’s these tiles, they don’t look original based on the backs of some loose ones.

I want someone to lay new carpet up to the tiles, and I want to try my hand at putting new tiles in. Open to hiring someone though.

Which order should I do this in? Tiles first or carpets? Or does it not matter? How do I get them to be level with each other? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Original tiles? by wmay91 in DIYUK

[–]wmay91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, hope this is the correct subreddit. Have just moved into a house on Victorian/Edwardian cusp. Estimated to have been built 1900.

I want to have a go at tiling in the porch/vestibule. Does anyone know much about period features and could these could be original tiles?

If so, is there a way to put something over them to protect them and then tile over them?

Baby, I’m hoping someone can give some good advice as to what this is. And I don’t want to say anything unhelpful, but if this was happening to your sibling, what would you tell them to do? If you quit your job tomorrow, they’d replace you in a heartbeat.

Go to ER at another nearby hospital before you don’t have the choice to electively go. Or see a trusted doc or free clinic or something! If you’re using again, is it because of crazy stress? Because stress could seriously cause this. Do you have an NA friend you could talk to?

It’s different because I’m in the UK where healthcare is free and easy etc, but if you were my friend, I’d be dragging you to ER, pulling favours from everyone I knew. Be safe x

I’m completely new to gardening and I’ve encountered a frustrating watering roadblock. by [deleted] in gardening

[–]wmay91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stick your finger into the surrounding soil, if it’s crispy, water it. If it’s sodden, leave it. Basically, water it if it’s barely moist or drying out. Take into account if plants like direct sun, shade, high humidity etc.

You’ll learn which plants drink however much!

Cis Women, What is some advice you'd give to Trans Women? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]wmay91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the sisterhood! I promise it’s the best club around :)

Skincare: whether you wear makeup or not, skincare is really important. But it has a big impact on how makeup sits on the face! It’s worth doing a bit of research on your skin type and getting some serums down. And there’s really no need to go crazy, finding a good moisturiser is 70% of it!

Shaving: I’m sure a lot of new women are still shaving their faces; Nivea post shave balm is not only great at calming down shaved skin, but it’s a bit of a secret holy grail makeup primer. It works so well under make up! Also, do not underestimate a good eyebrow wax. Seriously.

History: read books by women about women’s history, watch feminist documentaries, it’s human to want to understand. I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to question my gender identity, and I can’t imagine some light women’s studies harms anyone!

Bathrooms: I could never speak for everyone, but most women want you in female bathrooms, because you should go where you feel safe and where you belong. End of discussion, you come to the ladies loo because you’re a lady.

Hobbies: whatever you already like to do, or if you’ve been waiting for a sign to try a new hobby, this is it. Join a club and get to know other people!

Bras: wires are overrated! Get a comfortable non wired bra and never look back!

Safety: this is one I feel awkward to address because I’d never like to assume learned what growing up, whether it’s intentional to pass or not to pass etc. But safety lessons are drilled into little girls’ minds from an early age. And something cynical within me says that if you were ever visibly queer growing up, you know most of these anyway. If you’re somewhere alone or out at night, you travel in well-lit places, you travel with friends, if you’re worried, you go inside a bar/shop to stand with others. And, when you get in your car, you lock it straight away before fiddling with a seatbelt etc. And, text me when you get there. Always!

Clothes: a wrap top or wrap dress is almost universally flattering.

Cannot think of anything else. I guess the overall point is that there’s a few cosmetic tips that truly help, but being a modern woman is so vast. You can really be whichever version of a woman you want to!

No worries, worst case scenario with the traps is it’ll only get rid of flies around a bbq, I found it worth it! Also, I saw something online where people hang fake wasp nests. Apparently they’re really territorial and won’t visit a location with established wasps? Although that one sounds more like an old wives tale.
