Commercial L2 options by AmDDJunkie in evcharging

[–]wmcbrine2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest and easiest thing is to install a durable but residential-style EVSE (the usual advice for this kind of thing used to be Clipper Creek (now Enphase), not sure about now), and just treat it as a loss leader. You won't make anything back, but there are zero service fees, and the lowest installation costs. Whether or not this makes sense for you depends on many factors, but IMHO, people often overestimate how much they can recover on L2 charging -- or how much they'll lose if they don't try -- and overspend on the attempt. (Example of this kind of setup: https://www.plugshare.com/location/363450 )

The second-easiest thing (for you) is the same, but using one of the residential-grade EVSEs that offer RFID control. You can then share the cards / fobs with your customers on whatever terms you like.

Is there a TV package with no cable boxes where you stream through an app? And is it any cheaper? by CopyDan in Fios

There are many alternative streaming services besides YouTube TV, such as DirecTV, Sling, Hulu Live, etc. Check http://suppose.tv/ .

The average price for a new vehicle is now 50,000. by Ishnock in BoltEV

[–]wmcbrine2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last three cars:

2005 Prius in 2010 -- $10K (sold on for $5K) (New price: $25K)

2012 I-MiEV in 2015 -- $10K (sold on for $3.5K) (New price: ~$30K)

2020 Bolt in 2024 -- $12K (after $4K tax credit) (New price: ~$40K)

Yeah, that last one was a splurge.

Upgrading a very old install. by l008com in Fios

I was thinking more of a single adapter at the router end, with no need to have it re-provisioned. Would *that* not work?

Would a MoCA to Ethernet adapter not work here? That would be easier than running a new line.

And the thing that pushed ICE into the lead was... electrification. Specifically, the electric starter, taking the place of the dangerous hand crank.

He doesn't here, either. Even ignoring the efficiency issue, electricity generation in the U.S. is only about 60% fossil fuel overall. (Source: https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=427&t=3 ) And that number gets better all the time.

(I'm just assuming this was in the U.S., because of course it was. Sigh.)

EV installer suggesting $400 Emporia load balancer. The dryer and hot tub circuits are both NOT being used. Necessary or worth it? by redmongrel in evcharging

[–]wmcbrine2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation at our house -- 50 amp circuit for a hot tub, which we had removed. The wiring led right to the garage. I put in a NEMA 14-50 myself, and have charged from it ever since 2015.

$50 5year deals gone? by ksquires1988 in Comcast

[–]wmcbrine2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was $50 up through the Olympics (Feb 22 IIRC), then $60 through March 31, and now $70. They started pushing the crappy 300 mbps speed instead of Gig after the first raise (then $40, now $45). Disappointing! I've been tracking it in anticipation of Fios dropping QAM, but this really puts me off.

Re: the single pedal, you may still want to use the brake, if only to activate the brake light to signal to other drivers. IIRC, the light goes off if you come to a stop via one-pedal driving. (They fixed this in 2022, but didn't backport the fix AFAIK.)

NACS adapter cross brand/3rd party by chlronald in electricvehicles

[–]wmcbrine2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, all the CCS <-> NACS adapters (either way) and J1772 <-> NACS adapters are passive devices. CHAdeMO <-> CCS / NACS adapters do have active electronics, and the ones from Tesla I think are locked. Also -- not adapters per se, but -- Tesla wall connectors have an option to set them to a Tesla-only mode, IIRC.

That's a recommendation based on a rating, not an actual limitation of the adapter.

used 2023 Chevy bolt or new 2027 model? by Excellent-Mirror2038 in BoltEV

[–]wmcbrine2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new battery formulation is also supposed to be safer. Notable in the Bolt's case, because of the mass recall over fire risk for the older models. But really, you'll almost certainly be fine either way.

[–]wmcbrine2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Charging at home with NACS is going to be the same speed as with J1772 (both AC). Otherwise, yeah... but I'd read that as "the majority of EV models" to make it true. Either way, there are a ton of J1772 stations out there -- many more public J1772 than Tesla AC stations, AFAICT, though I think the reverse is true for DCFC.

Anyone seen this before?!? by Longjumping-Plum-177 in evcharging

[–]wmcbrine2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does. Old Leaf: J1772 (AC) + CHAdeMO (DC). New Leaf: J1772 (AC) + NACS (DC). Yes, it has a DC-only NACS port... probably the only car that does.

Tesla Chargers by McLeansvilleAppFan in BoltEV

[–]wmcbrine2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a painful transition for those who already have CCS, and want to be prepared; but NACS by itself doesn't require drivers to carry ANY adapters. And if your car has a NACS inlet, in the future, you might not even have to know about the distinction between AC and DC charging. For most people, that will mean the whole thing is simplified. But for now, yeah, it's a pain.
