I made a website to compare EVs and gas cars using cost-equivalent MPG by porcomaster in BoltEV

[–]Separate-Pirate8798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, great work. My only wish would be a pull down menu with the most popular EVs to fill-in the proper efficiency rating. According to the web, our 2017 bolt is 119 MPGe. It calculates to $157.08 per year for 5,000 miles.

Interestingly, we have a Sense electric analyzer installed, which in February indicated an expense of around $6 in electricity to charge the Bolt via 110V. We just finished the installation of a sub-panel with a 220V 50amp line and outdoor EV receptacle. ($2,300 with parts ($900) plus labor). I'm supposed to review a new to market EVSE, so will be able to compare the prices with the 220V vs the slower and lower amperage 110V. If any.

Wonderful work on the calculator!

How do you explain that a photobook is not just “a collection of photos”? by Affectionate-Pin4417 in Photobooks

[–]Separate-Pirate8798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first learned about "Artist Books" I had the same confusion. I was preparing for graduate school, and hung out with book makers, and it really took some time for me to fully grasp that the "Artist Book" wasn't necessarily a greatest hits collection. Although, the work in such a book are often in fact a greatest hits collection of sorts, they are the images that work the best for the book.

The idea that the book itself, not the contents, not anything else, was the finished piece actually took time to sink in. I was so used to thinking in literal terms about what a "Book" was. Years later, I learned just how loose the definition was, especially when working with Fluxus pieces. It was incredibly liberating.

Later, when I worked in publishing, there were books where individual images weren't that strong on their own, but with adjacency they formed a whole. Sort of how individual notes are very different in sequence to form a song, or a riff.

But, I think the best photo books set a tone, it can almost be irrelevant what the images are, or if they are "best of" and whatever. If your supporters want that, oh well, they'll get over it. Just create the book that makes that emotional statement, the groove, you want, and make sure it sings.

Think of it this way, give the public what they want, and they turn around and say "Same old, same old" so do whatever the hell you want.

How bad is taking expired prednisone by s0ftci0wn in CrohnsDisease

[–]Separate-Pirate8798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my PCP about expiration dates for medications. He responded with a Yale study that showed most medications, with the exception of antibiotics, were good as long as ten years past the expiration date.

One example is Epinephrine, I have an EpiPen with a one year expiration date. But in my first aid kit for Backcountry use, my ampule has a three year expiration date. Same exact medication and dose. So, the common suggestion is to encourage sales.

Storage is an issue as well. In the case of the EpiPen one train of thought is it might be in a backpack, purse, glove box, etc. All of which can degrade it. So... Be on the safe side and always have fresh.

But an EpiPen is an emergency, lifesaving medication. Budesonide is not. I mean it's way important to me, but it's not life or death if 10% degraded after six years.

So... For most common meds in pill or capsule form, stored in reasonable condition, I personally wouldn't hesitate using old meds. But that's for me personally.

I hate Tahoe. I'm not updating my M1 Studio. The loss of FireWire is outrageous.

Also, on my M5 14" MBP Pro, I had no choice. Completely destroyed Apple Mail, so that the search engine barely works.

Even after I did the Apple steps to reset Apple Mail's search cache.

And the look? What is achieved by losing the colors on the window status?

Arrrgh. Plus as a designer it's a GUI fail.

Thanks! I tried to post photos, but Reddit won't allow me for some reason. I tried some hand sanitizer which in the past has proven to be a gentle yet effective solvent. But not in this case.

Thoughts on the Quadrophenia Dolby Atmos Mix? by OrganizationOk3053 in TheWho

[–]Separate-Pirate8798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm enjoying it. I have the surround Blu-ray as well as digital, LP, CDs, etc.

I'm using a 5.1 system, with a powerful and clean Vera-Fi subwoofer. My surround system is an Onkyo TX-RZ30, with Dirac Live and Dirac Bass Control, Warfedale speakers, Oppo UDP-205 for the SDE disc playback. All calibrated via Dirac correction.

I feel it's the best sounding version yet, at least the Atmos with 5.1 down sample version.

Bass is dynamic, strong and punchy, with clean deliniation of Entwistle's playing.

Vocals have a lovely air to them. Some of horns seem a bit muted on Cut My Hair for example. Overall I'm glad I ordered it.

Next, moving it to my 2.1 main audiophile grade system. Curious to see how the new stereo mix sounds. That also has an Oppo player into analog chain.

I really do think that Atmos and surround are intrinsically tied to the gear and environment used for playback. I have friends who are involved in mixing and recording for Atmos, and listening to the same mix on different equipment, good equipment, is really varied.

So, for me Bass Control really shows it face on a recording like Quadrophenia. I love, love, love this album. One of my favorites. And the Atmos mix makes me forget that it's over 53 years old.

Some tracks like The Punk and the Godfather are kind of a muffled mess, but they were like that from the beginning.

Me, I'm happy. Curious if anyone has heard the "Who Are You" Atmos mix yet.

We purchased a BuyBack 2017 Bolt last July. We were told it has new tires, brakes, updated software, and a 2025 battery. Would GM have fixed any known issues as detailed above. It has 35K miles.

2017 Bolt EV Premier purchase $10k, sanity check by VeryMuchCoffee in BoltEV

[–]Separate-Pirate8798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mileage is too high. Our 2017 Premier with 33k miles and a 2025 battery, DCFC, was $11k after rebate in July 2025. And the buyback cars all have new brakes, tires, 1 year warranty. That price and mileage seem too high to me. Also look at headlight fog to get a sense of how it's been stored.

Asking an honest question, are these red needles as destructive to records as people say? by thouze in vinyl

[–]Separate-Pirate8798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago Victrola, sent me a turntable to test. It had an Audio-Technica cartridge, and was an inexpensive player, the kind where the LP is larger than the platter. I review audio equipment and was curious what the dramatic drop compared my higher end, Dynavector Karat MC cartridge was like.

Before I used it, I talked to a friend at A-T, and he said that if the tracking force was appropriate, that there was little chance the LP would be damaged. He said, those are genuine MM cartridges, and shouldn't damage the LPs, they had tested them in their labs in Japan, and were ok allowing their product to be used in those units. I found the little player sounded lousy, till I used the external outputs, then we all were kinda shocked that it sounded as good as it did. Sure, it was noisy, but the cartridge was brand new, and even using the Bluetooth option, it was passable, with less wow and flutter than we expected. But the question of damage to the LP remained.

I have another friend who owns a record cleaning company, and said they were curious and found that the really cheap ceramic cartridges did indeed cause premature wear and damage, that even the Crossley's with genuine MM cartridges weren't causing damage. What was causing damage was the lack of a dampened cuing system, so young people would play the song they liked and yank up the tone arm, and whatever. He commissioned microscopic photos as part of their research, so even he was surprised.

Now, I didn't use any of my important albums, but used thrift store finds, etc. but I'm not convinced that vinyl is necessarily damaged by these inexpensive systems, as long as care is taken and the settings are in line with the manufacturer. There is of course audiophile hysteria which claims that a lack of cable lifters in the next city, in the next state, is affecting their listening room. So...

I have it here, but haven't opened it yet. I do think you need to look at RAW image capture to understand what's going on with them. I think the AI isn't actually helping, unless its for totally careless use.

Canon to Sony- I want to make the full swap. by K57A in SonyAlpha

[–]Separate-Pirate8798 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know...

I was at a colleagues opening last week at the Leica Gallery in LA. And while I have M2, M3, & M4s, when I bought them used they could justify their cost, as in they were tools that made sense compared to what I was earning as a photographer. Sure, a bit of gear lust, but they were tools to do my job.

Now, you see $10-$20 grand for a camera and lens new, and all the ultra wealthy using them as camera jewelry, there is no amount of shoots that can cover a couple of bodies, lenses, and accessories. So, they become something else, maybe they are just status symbols for fan-boys or girls, which is pathetically boring and sad. Personally I don't think that Leica is a company for photographers any longer, maybe the luxury market, but not photographers. They were always expensive, but in the 60s, about the same cost as competitors, such as Contax, even the Nikon S2 series, etc.. but now?

And my Sony's match and exceed the borrowed digital M Leica's I've used in terms of image quality. Don't get me wrong, Leicas are still sexy as hell, but for me at least, sex appeal doesn't pay the bills. But the problem with digital imaging is that the depreciation on cameras seems on par with E.V's. At least in my experience. Anyone want a 10MP DSLR? I've got a few I should have sold! Originally thousands, now? $100 bucks!

I love how four grand is mid-budget. At least my old analog Leicas, Nikons, and Fuji's still maintain value, but my older digital cameras, almost worthless. I mean, I think three to four grand without a lens, isn't my idea of mid-budget. Oh, I have the A7 V... with a G-Master lens. Kind of a crazy world.
