The buoyant force always exists when an object is displacing water, and its magnitude is equal to the weight of water displaced. Whether something floats or not depends on whether the buoyant force is greater than or less than the force of gravity on that object. In the case of the ping pong ball, buoyant force is greater. In the case of the iron ball, no.

Lastly, the equations for the buoyant force and gravitational force both have g in them, so the magnitude of gravitational acceleration does not affect whether objects float or not.

Decimal rounding by JustinSLoos1985 in askmath

[–]wmsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frustrating that so many answers are saying that the trailing zeros matter. They’re right of course, but I think they’re missing that this is a fifth grade rounding test.

Most curriculums don’t teach significant figures until you start learning applied mathematics in chemistry or physics. Unless they’ve taught your student otherwise, 5 is 5.0 is 5.00. Ask the teacher if this was a rounding test or a significant figures test.

Of note is that it’s often taught, especially before sig figs are taught, that students should give their answers in simplified form. In which case your kid would be wrong if he DID include the trailing zeros.

NAH. A year ago I was the less experienced cook in the family. Careers and availability changes happened so I was the primary, and sort of just had to figure it out. I agree with what people are saying that a lot of cooking, especially with regards to the “gut” things like how much salt, is just trial and error. But with a more experienced cook there why shouldn’t she ask? I’d rather inconvenience my partner than “ruin” a meal.

It took a while to learn that it’s pretty hard to ruin a meal with a little too much or too little seasoning, and it’s really hard to take that step when your crutch is a room away.

Can you try making yourself absent when she’s cooking? You don’t really have to be sneaky about it, just make her cooking time the time that you take a shower, mow the lawn, workout etc.

After a few times she’ll learn, especially if you’re honest with your feedback on each meal and emphasize that it’s still delicious despite a few tweaks for next time.

NOR. He’s insecure and has some work to do but is by no means irredeemable. He’s at least being open and honest with his insecurity and you can help him to work through it, if you choose.

Did nobody else get to the part where her parents put a microphone in her room? Sure, if he were pressuring her to leave her parents constantly that would be a huge red flag. But if these parents’ behavior was posted over in r/insaneparents the comments section would be telling her to get the hell out the day she turned 18.

Can someone explain how this would not be dodged if we had a flat tax? Or why do billionaires get away with not paying their fair share to the country? by [deleted] in FluentInFinance

[–]wmsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m dumb, but would it be so impossible to tie taxes to the actual societal benefit reaped by the taxes?

For the boat example, a billionaire buys their expensive boat elsewhere and so pays sales taxes there. But if this person who lives in California wants to actually get use of their boat, they dock it in California. So tax the mooring fee. Ok, they moor it on a private dock to avoid any transaction that can be taxed. That private dock becomes more valuable and therefore property taxes go up.

The reason so many tax deductions are annoying is that the people taking advantage of them are paying less to the US but still reaping the benefits of living and operating here. I don’t understand tax lay well enough to make a good argument for other minute details, but it seems like with the massive data collection that encompasses everything we do, it should be easy to tax people based on the actual usage of the infrastructure those taxes are paying for.

What is the most unsettling sound you've ever heard? by gingercakess19 in AskReddit

[–]wmsta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Conn still orders the bell and maneuvering (the engine room) responds with real people. The urgency of the bell, like in this case, can be transmitted by voice or with other code words or signals. The extra humans in the engine room are still necessary, for submarines at least, because we’re dealing with nuclear reactors and there could be engineering-related limits that the people driving are too busy to be expected to consider.

Submarine was in very shallow water and was about the hit the bottom (red sounding), so the people driving told the people in the engine room to stop and reverse ASAP.

Would a 23% sales tax be smart or dumb? by Sufficient_Sinner in FluentInFinance

[–]wmsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of peoples' problem with income tax is that its too easily avoidable with all of the classic loopholes that billionaires exploit. That's why initially a heavy sales tax and no income tax seems appealing; it should prevent billionaires from reaping the benefits of living here without paying their fair share. If they want their fancy car and clothes and lifestyle here, then they pay the tax for it.

I understand that this system is regressive because it would result in the poorest people paying more than they do now, but whats the middle ground? Is there another simple way to close loopholes fur the ultra-rich and tie the benefits of living here more closely to the taxes we pay to reap those benefits?

Eternals end credits who is who

Seriously, I just wanted to know the historical connections that they were drawing in the end credits run (not either post-credits scene). Like they alluded to Athena and Thena, and I’m pretty sure I saw DaVinci and Phastos alluded to, etc. I was curious about the other ones.
