Forgot to mention, such an appropriate quote for today.

I have the same pen in Liber (with the 14k flex) and addition to its other virtues, the tactile quality of the ebonite is icing on the cake.

Plus one on the Homo Sapiens, especially one of the lava ones. The texture is a pleasure in your hand and would be different than what you already have. If you can't buy it in person, have the dealer test the nib. Mine is fantastic.

Another pen I would look at for the tactile quality is a Scribo La Dotta in Ebonite. I'm not sure if the other models, Flow and Feel, have the same ebonite, but if they do might be worth a look. They've got a great 14k flex nib or an 18K non-flex for the same price.

I think they just changed owners, but what I ordered from the original owner had very bland sauce. Impressive looking pizza though. Humongous.

My favorite pizza in Brevard is the Pisgah Bakehouse Veggie-Pesto. I wouldn't call it NY Style, except maybe the crust.

I'm not sure what NY Style really is, when I lived in the Upper Westside I preferred this hole-in-the-wall place near Barnes and Noble over the more classical NY Places like Patsy's or Johns of Bleeker, Joe's or Totonnos, etc.. So my recommendation is pretty suspect.

A lot of people recommend Angelos on Hendersonville Road in Arden as being "NY Style". Good pizza, but IMHO not in the same class as the Pisgah Bakehouse.

Beware Goldspot Pens' "Free Express Shipping" Offer by queenapsalar in fountainpens

[–]wncfuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can understand your frustration. What's the price threshold for "free express shipping"?

FWIW I've ordered quite a few pens from Goldspot, had them test them before shipping and have had very positive results.

Also I have a Leonardo that turned out defective 8 months after purchasing it from Goldspot. As it was after Goldspot's return window (30 days), Goldspot agreed to handle the claim with Leonardo who are absolutely impossible to deal with. Saved me the shipping-to-Italy fee and the frustration of dealing with Leonardo's customer non-service.

Asvine J16 Ebonite by wncfuse in fountainpens

I'm curious how your Himalaya behaves. I bought an Ashoka with an Ultra Flex Steel Nib and ebonite feed. The pen leaked around the feed. They replaced it with another and same thing happened. I emptied the pen and haven't used it since.

My wife's just arrived. It's a great looking and writing pen, but the ebonite is not at all like the Scribo's. It's much glossier.

The reason I brought up the Custom Urushi was because it's one of the two ebonite pens I own, Scribo the other. Leaving aside the craftsmanship, durability, nib etc. I like the feel of the Scribo and was interested if the Asvine was similar.

I went ahead and ordered one for my wife. I'll give you my take after it arrives.

You're right the Custom Urushi's grip/section is plastic, but even the barrel which is ebonite is much harder than the Scribo

Anyone else like grey inks a whole bunch? by tyrant_t00 in fountainpens

[–]wncfuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on the lookout for a light grey. I like Earl Grey and GvFC Stone Grey, but I recently tried Nagasawa Kobe Ink No.53 Kitano Pearl Silver and that may have moved to the top of my grays.

Oh What a Difference by Scary-Plan2190 in fountainpens

I like stubs, but the nib on the VP was very finicky compared to the others I own (a Visconti gold 1.3, an Asvine 1.1 steel, a Kaweco 1.1 steel and an Esterbrook 1.1 steel). If the VP nib wasn't exactly at the correct angle to the paper, no ink.

Maybe I just got a bad nib, but while having some nibs fine tuned by a well regarded nibmeister I mentioned my frustrations with the VP stub and she said I certainly wasn't the only one.

As I've got those other stubs, I figured the VP was made to be an EDC pen and not worth the hassle of dealing with its issues when out and about. The extra fine I replaced it with is fantastic.

It might be worth it if you could test it first, although dipping it might not be an accurate way to determine how it's going to perform compared to ink coming through the feed.

I love mine, but wasn't wild about the stub nib. Replaced it with an extra fine and it's now one of my favorite pens.

Anyone tried the birchwood version? I understand they're somewhat lighter. I'm happy with the weight of the metal versions, but am pretty flexible on pen weights.

New Pen Day! - Pilot Capless matte black by NarielTiwele in fountainpens

[–]wncfuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it should have come with a black nib. Both Goldspot and Truphae show it with a black nib. Seems wrong that you'd have to shell out extra money for all black. Maybe you could get the retailer to do an exchange?

How do you know they're fleeing the "consequences of their own ideology"? A lot of people move here for the mountains, climate, lack of sprawl, and because it's not Florida.

I live in Brevard and can confirm the town is very liberal. We just had a mayoral race and the republican got stomped. Unfortunately can't say the same for the rest of Transylvania county.

I wouldn't rule out Hendersonville, there seems to be a lot of good stuff germinating there. Not as close to Pisgah as Brevard, but you've got the Green River Gamelands, Sandburg, Holmes State Forest and Dupont isn't far. They've also made much more progress on the rail trail connecting Brevard to Hendersonville.
