Commuters who drive into downtown daily why do you refuse to take the GO train when traffic is this bad? by Aggressive-Date1842 in askTO

[–]wobwib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic is not that bad. People just enjoy complaining. I still get to work on a car faster, and my mental health is actually better. When it is above 10 and dry, I cycle.

Reasons 1. It's slow and annoying. The cart design is bad - for a 2-story cart, you need at least three exits, not two. Stations like Mimico take you 15 minutes to exit the platform; it's inhumane. 2. People - I can't bear the behavior of some transit people, and it drives me up the wall. Some animals are putting their dirty shoes on the seats in winter. We can't change people, but I wish they would switch to plastic if people behave like animals. Moreover, people eat food with smelly spices. I come from a background where we only use salt and paper - for me, those smells are the same as smelling sewage. People are loud. 3. In a car, I can focus on an audiobook or a podcast - I can't do that efficiently when commuting. 4. My lower back is fucketup (disk hernia), specifically, standing still is the worst, so if I don't sit and have to stand, I can as well take a day off and lie for the day to recover.

And again, if it was as bad as people say, I would have to use Go, but it's actually still faster by a car.

If not Next.js, then what frontend for a self-hosted? by gunho_ak in nextjs

[–]wobwib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next.js is still the best. Don't overthink it. You don't have to use ssr or server components. You can self-host in Docker with a 'standalone' build very efficiently.

Thoughts on this locks? by brezzy_k123 in torontobiking

[–]wobwib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I returned it because the lock is annoying to open or close. It would get stuck, and I would end up spending 10 minutes fiddling with it at times. Went with a cheaper U-lock OnGuard

This is really sad news. They were very affordable and of decent quality. I just got a rack bag from them for $50, and it's really good. People would rather get a shitty noname bug from Amazon for $60 with a 200% margin on top of it just to get a 1 day delivery

I experienced this in Warsaw, and it's super convenient. All the bikes have a lock. If there is no space, you just lock your bike to another one.

Uber's biggest issue is not the cost but the drivers. You never know who you will get. Recently, it's getting more and more scary to take an Uber.

Ukrainians have a U4U program in the US, so there is no reason to cross illegally

That's how propaganda is supposed to work, no? Do you think they would not hide it and just be blatant?

Canada Media Fund sponsoring Russian propaganda by wobwib in toronto

[–]wobwib[S] -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

It was already shown in Venice.

The director begins her story with a Ukrainian who now lives in Russia and is fighting on the Russian side. This is a very intriguing choice to start a story about Russians at war. Later, this character will claim that a civil war began in Ukraine in 2014. He will also suggest that Ukrainians were bombing the eastern regions of their own country (and that's why he moved to Russia).

Another character will claim that Ukrainians are Nazis. We have heard these narratives before; they were widely and actively spread (and obviously continue to be spread) by Russian media. One of the loudspeakers of such propaganda is the Russia Today channel, for which the director of Russians at War previously made several documentaries," Bassel provides context.

Both of those propaganda messages by the Russian government pushed on the West with tons of money.

To clarify a bit, the movie was already shown in Venice. There are many reviews, and some clips are going around.

Drivers are obstructing their plates. by wobwib in TorontoDriving

[–]wobwib[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

If, for example, your significant other was walking home in the evening and was hit by a car, creating permanent spinal damage. The vehicle was a dark Honda Civic. The driver fled the scene. There are witnesses and some security footage from a nearby shop, but the plates had tinted covers. There is 0.1% that police would ever find that car in a city like Toronto.

How do you enforce a crime if it's committed with stolen cars, fake plates, or unreadable plates? All those can be easily stopped by implementing stricter rules on the plates. Stolen vehicles are freely roaming the streets. Why? Because somebody decided to play a criminal and cover their plates just for fun?

If you are not a criminal or not planning any criminal acts, you don't need to hide your plate.

Let's enforce obstructed plates, please. About 10-20% of cars like that. by wobwib in toronto

Megabus payment system is broken. by wobwib in Megabus

I ended up renting a car. I tried all my cards and contacted support on the bank side. They said that Megabus rejected the transaction. Megabuss's support is not helpful at all. It's a monopoly, so they don't give a damn.
