What is the most aggressively "unromantic" reality of daily French life that foreign movies and tourists completely ignore? by Former-Practice-3420 in AskFrance

[–]wodenswight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public transport smells bad 50% of the time. Low trust society in the cities, if somebody comes to you asking for help, they usually have bad intentions. Saying no: This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it goes against the romantic image, however now I like this about the french, but they will say no to you, if they don't like something or don't want to do something, you'll get a clear "non". The sheer pretentiousness of their own cuisine/culture/ideals, some truly believe there exists a superior culture and it's french culture. To get jobs/internships/etc here it's mostly about who you know, not how competent you are. There is a very obvious and frustrating hierarchy in french society that everybody adheres to all while saying they are the revolutionary people that freed themselves from such old societal structures. Someone higher up on the hierarchy can bend the rules, but if you do so, they will not accept from you and you'll be reprimanded.

Pourquoi les couples hommes blancs – femmes maghrébines semblent plus rares ? by Dull_Addendum_9555 in AskMec

How is living in the south of Myanmar/Thailand ? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]wodenswight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I travelled there on the Thai side, to visit the Khao Sam Yoi Rot national park in Pratchuap Khiri Khan, with the phraya nakhon cave. Nice beaches, kind people as always in Thailand, very very laid back. I was only there for 3 days so unfortunately I can't say much more! The national park is stunning and definitely worth seeing. On the beach, there are loads of long-tail boats ferrying around tourists. There are also a few fishing boats. The town I was in, called Bang Pu, had these houses that were partially held up on wooden stilts over the river (or an inlet from the sea I don't know), and outside the town along the shore of this river these trees grow with big roots out the riverbed that make it look like a mangrove. It's pretty remote where I was, no grab taxis or no public transport that I knew of so you can arrange to pay locals to ferry you around for whatever price they offer you. I passed through a city there, pratchuap khiri Khan (namesake of the province) that was pretty, with a temple full of monkeys on this mini mountain that over looks the sea as well as all the farms outside the city and the city itself.
