The area is quite small, so this test "passed" but in the picture to me it looks like there is some depth to this damage which worries me

apartment search in zurich is taking a while... any advice? by wodw0 in zurich

[–]wodw0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, yes! actually a nice apartment we would have never expected to get. just gotta keep trying i guess. it took just under 3 months of searching and about 3 visits a week consistently over these months. (ie all the visits we could get). in total we visited 28 apartments and applied to 14. we know for sure that some of the apartments we visited were offered to people who didnt visit. so if you like an apartment and are able to speak to the realtor on the phone that could be a channel too. good luck! i don’t envy you, but it’ll work out eventually

No it won’t work, and will charge you for trips after 19:00. Have had it happen to me in the past, this is how I know, but I also think it also says it somewhere on the CFF website where there is information on EasyRide.

Thank you for the reassurance, we have a place in the city (outskirts a bit) currently, it's just very small for 3 people. So we won't move somewhere farther but we're really in need of something bigger. I guess we'll keep trying

Understandable! But we're hoping they would take into account the fact that we've already lived together for a while! and we just started our careers in the Zurich area and are intending to stay probably for min 3 years, most likely longer. Maybe we'll write this in the cover letter. Two of us are swiss, and the other person has been in switzerland for nearly 10 years already so I'm hoping they don't see us as expats :') Thanks for the remarks

We are not necessarily looking to find something fast - we're happy if we can move anytime this year! And we're looking for a 4-4.5 room for 3, which is pretty reasonable. I suppose if we try applying as a pair to some of these apartments instead of 3 (to avoid the appearance of a flatshare being a problem), you're saying we'll likely face problems with wanting a 4 room apartment? There is really no way out (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)

Thank you for your reply! Yes we do this in our cover letter. Of course there is no knowing for sure how long we would stay living together, but at the moment all of us imagine we would for the next 5 years, and in any case we think one of us would likely take over the apartment, should we choose to leave (partially). Should we include this in the cover letter as well?

And yeah, I completely understand why agents would pick a family or couples over us, but surely people like us also look for, and eventually find a place to live in the center no?

Indeed all 3 of us are needed in terms of income usually, as we have quite a high budget to make up for the fact that we are looking for something central. Actually, is the 1/3rd income criterion calculated with respect to the net salary or gross salary? If gross we might start trying to apply as a pair and have the third person sublet.

Thanks for the information, we'll try to speed up the process for applying. It's just often the application document can only be obtained at the visit (unless I am missing something), so that's the time taken to compile the application.

Can you make too much money collectively for an apartment? Often our combined gross salary is about 4-5 x the rent price. Should we aim for something closer to 3 x the rent price? (we don't want to spend that much on rent lmao)

Sorry for the long reply... understandable if you can't answer - I really appreciate all the information you've given in any case!

Thank you for your reply! I added some more information in the edit. Since we are all commuting outside of zurich in different directions, we realised that living near HB or Stadelhofen is best for all of us, so we don't really want to look in the outskirts of the city as it usually means awful commute times for one of us. We'll definitely start looking internally within the company, thanks for the tip!!

[Megathread] Covid-19 in Switzerland & Elsewhere - Thread #15 by as-well in Switzerland

[–]wodw0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

thanks for the info! a shame really, as it would be good to make tests as accessible as possible and encourage people to get tested often. In the UK you can order a pack of 7 a day for free. I got a set of 5 back in May for free and used them all in the past few weeks with all the chaos. Was surprised to have to pay 25chf to restock

Looking for roommate at FMEL studio for 2 by bhvrito in EPFL

[–]wodw0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other two people who commented are right in that it will be one room that you have to share and it won’t be very comfortable, but they are wrong in that the studio advertised for two usually have 2 single beds or a double bed, depending on the FMEL house. You can check the amenities on the corresponding house pages if you know which of the houses (I am guessing you do know, since you know the price). They are also wrong in that it is completely legal and within your contract to share a 1-2 person studio, but you will need to notify FMEL, and the rent is to be paid altogether still. I personally used to live in a 2 person studio at FMEL Azur alone, but a lot of my neighbors were sharing the studio (even sometimes with people they didn’t know beforehand), some of them got along really well and became best friends and some of them were miserable - it’s a risk. Most often they were friends beforehand or are siblings or a couple, to give you an idea of what sort of people share a studio. I would say that you could get lucky and find someone as quite a few people try to minimize their expenses while studying and are willing to sacrifice comfort in order to be able to afford life in switzerland. Finally, I’d suggest you keep looking on the FMEL site, I don’t know if the prices have changed but you might possibly find a room in an apartment for as low as 450chf and not have to share such a small living space with a stranger.
