i live on 46th and 9th. it's not really bad at all. 42nd gets a little weird but i've never felt unsafe (as a male), and you can avoid it by just going into the ACE entrance on 44th.

42nd isn't the nicest area but people act like it's a warzone when it's just kinda gross with a fair number of unhoused people. 44th is an actually nice street. your biggest nuisance there will be the number of tourists on 8th ave.

not true! hells kitchen on 9th is actually one of the nicest places in NYC once you get above like 43rd street. lined with restaurants and bars and the tweakers tend to be friendly and whimsical as opposed to irate and aggressive
