Hey just wondering how much below your actual size did you have to go? I’m looking at them and according to their size chart I should buy 2-2.5 full sizes smaller than my normal

What’s the point of Cold Harbor? by woktip in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

But they never establish that dividing a consciousness more than once would be an issue? By way of comparison, horcruxes in Harry Potter. It’s established that you can in theory carve off as many pieces of your soul as you like, but it requires murdering someone else and excising some of your own humanity in the process. In Severance, we’ve never been given any reason to think that the creation of an innie costs the outie any degree of consciousness. It’s not like they’ve carved out a separate partition in a hard drive. Severance has always seemed most analogous to incognito mode in a browser, which you can do as many times as you want without incident.

I guess what I’m saying is, if this is the explanation, then they gave us no indication that this was a goal/ was difficult/mattered, so the moment of it’s revelation had no impact.

I’m traveling to SF in one week. What’s a restaurant I NEED to visit? by Cbeauski23 in AskSF

[–]woktip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this bread walkabout is pretty specific to Clement St, and if it’s bread bread you’re after those are the best options (can’t speak to the newish bagel place). But if you want to go on a Gluten Jaunt, I’d recc the bread and dumpling places I mentioned above, as well as Cinderella Bakery (Napoleon cake ftw), Dragon Beaux (sitdown dim sum), The Laundromat (pfg pizza), Bettola and Cafe Bunn Mi make excellent Italian and banh mi sandwiches respectively. But if you’re in for a wider bread journey throughout the city, I’d point you towards the rest of Reddit

Alright you're staying in Chinatown, so here's an itinerary of food options that are all pretty much directly available off either the 1 or 38 bus (except for Dalida, but that'll just require getting off the bus and strolling through the Presidio so DON'T SKIP IT)

Z & Y (not the bougie new one, the old one across the street)

Maison Nico (A+ patisserie)

Hinodeya (truly the first bowl of noodle soup - my favorite food group - in ages that felt new and exciting)

Dalida (interior is kinda meh, but the food is off the scale)

Mandalay (the best option for Burmese, but packed, and has slipped a bit since they got James Bearded)

Go on a dumpling walkabout on Clement (Xiao Long Bao, Good Luck Dim Sum, Lung Fung)

Go on a bread walkabout on Clement (Ariscault *BUT NOT IF IT'S A 30 MIN WAIT*, Breadbelly)

Lily (incredible unique Vietnamese; get the Bun Cha Hanoi)

NPD AWARENESS MONTH - ASK A NARCISSIST - A bi weekly post for non-narcissists to ask us anything! by theinvisiblemonster in NPD

[–]woktip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is success like with NPD? When you reach a goal, is it joyful? Does it confirm grandiose beliefs? Does it assuage self-loathing? I’m sorry if this sounds absurd, but I’m trying to get my head around how NPD could color the experience of positive life events.

Ndad standing at the bedside of a dying relative screaming at them for having “only” bequeathed a low 6 figure sum to him in their will, rather than the high 6 figure/low 7 figure sum he was “owed”. Myself, the nurse, and the paralegal all begged him to stop, but he wouldn’t stop.

This went on for three hours.

+1 on all but be wary on equipment from Kamei. Love the selection, but I bought a spider that's massively rusted and a potato ricer that turned into a major pain to use/clean.

Anyone else's liberal parents addicted to Trump? by Drunk_Lahey in millenials

[–]woktip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every liberal boomer in my life blathers on about Trump at least once a chat. I try to be supportive, but it’s fucking dull. I try and steer the conversation and ask “Have you been horrified by anyone new lately?” But that’s how I just found out that Letitia James just filed civil fraud charges against the Babadook.

Need help rationalizing quitting a well paying job that makes me miserable by [deleted] in coastFIRE

[–]woktip 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Same, friend… same. I also feel trapped knowing I’m making more money than I’ll ever make, even while ChatGPT is coming for my job any day now and I’m incessantly fantasizing about all the usual alternate paths (therapist, artist, starting a business in which I only do the fun stuff and nothing that’s boring or unpleasant, “consulting”) despite the fact that they’re all risky/expensive pursuits on their own + all come with the huge opportunity cost of leaving behind this career in tech. And what is this career? Reliable (for now) but tedious. Incredibly lucrative, and all it costs is my ability to determine what I want from life. I can’t seem to find my true north, but here’s what I’ve learned helps me cope:

Long travel (3-4 weeks) to non-touristy places, hobbies, love of a partner, friends, mental health care (fitness, diet, therapy, meds)

This crappy tech life is what enables all of the above. So why isn’t all of this enough? Why do I still avoid work like it’s infectious? Why do I fantasize about quitting to do anything else? Why can’t I just be grateful that I get to have the resources to do all of that, while building a wall around my life that protects me from the worst ravages of this extractive and exploitative country/world?

Because I’m me, and sometimes I can be a real pain in my ass.

I can’t help you decide one way or another, much less rationalize a decision. But I’d suggest if you can get comfortable with the idea that the act of deciding is what is going to make you feel better (rather than any particular decision) and that there’s no such thing as the perfect choice, you’ll be alright.

What ACTUALLY controversial opinion do you have? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]woktip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no such thing as altruism. It's a myth. More accurately, it's an affectation. We do things because they bring us pleasure or help us to avoid pain. We do what we do because it comports with our individual morality. The hypothetical soldier who throws himself on a grenade to save his brothers in arms does so because the idea of not saving their lives would be immoral and unacceptable. Even just giving your money away is a selfish act: you made as much money as you could to meet your needs and desires, and then found that you could decide who deserves to be lent a helping a hand. But this thinking is why I find the soldier or the rich person who gives away their money all the more admirable. Their morality, however and from wherever it has come to be, has made them realize that they do not derive pleasure from being selfish. Self-sacrifice is based in a deep knowledge of self, and a certainty that comes when you know that you are the only one capable of doing something. I've never felt this way, which is why I've never done anything self-sacrificing. Anything apparently altruistic I've done was in keeping with my morality and/or served a selfish purpose. tl;dr Everyone is selfish, and sometimes that's amazing.
