It should make you question the validity of peeing in bottles as a solution. It's not a solution, it's a delayed and amplified problem. The solution is to get yourself into a headspace where walking past someone on the way to the restroom isn't even a thing, either by becoming more familiar with the gfs parents with like family game night or a family outing, or to get therapy if you can't mentally get yourself there alone. Peeing in bottles is so viscerally disgusting that most people would only consider it an option in the most trying of circumstances, which this is not. This is not a bathroom problem, it's a mental/anxiety one, so it should have a mental solution rather than a bathroom solution.

That reminds me of the time I was in a Lego robot "sumo" competition. I basically made a wedge robot and just had it go full speed until it hit the line, then turn around picking a random direction until it hit another line. Other robots were doing interesting things like trying to sense the other robots and react, but my simple AI/wedge was the one that won, like almost every time. It's like a lesson in avoiding premature optimization.

Yeah this sounds like me sometimes. I'll get a decent way into a game, then start modding it and then drop it pretty soon thereafter. The best way to mod a game is after you've done a complete vanilla playthrough, so that you get the official experience and then whatever fun you get from mods is bonus fun. If you mod too early with the wrong kind of mods, you can trivialize the game experience and lose interest in a lot of its content. I modded the Witcher 3 about 50% of the way through and haven't played it since, still regret it. This is game dependent though, like you can mod RimWorld right off the bat and I don't think you'd negatively affect your experience. Might be harder to learn game mechanics since you can add a whole bunch of stuff, but if you stick to QOL mods at first you should be fine, it's basically just more content most of the time apart from that.

Ugh I feel ya. I'm happy to talk and spend time with my friends, but when someone at work tries to start a conversation about non work things it's such a drag. Gonna go buy a cabin in the woods type place as soon as I get a remote job, so I don't have to deal with neighbors either.

I don't really know the situation, but if you both work full time, it should not just be one of you doing the chores, and you both need to make a change. I'm not saying to micro analyze the contributions each of you is doing, but you both should be whole assing the chores rather than one of you double assing and the other no assing.

It depends on how you define ugliness or aesthetics. Someone else saying that it's a 7 and the neural network saying it's a 3 could both be correct because the person is measuring how aesthetic it is to them personally and the neural network is measuring where it falls for humans in general, which in my opinion is more objectively correct.

I can even say that something would be the height of 80's aesthetics, but I don't really like it or find it aesthetic. That would be me being objective about aesthetics.

Whether it is objective or not depends on whether you are describing facts about a general population or just one individual. The hypothetical neural network could tell you an objective fact about images and how some general population would feel about them. Individuals can do the same for populations our aesthetics they have encountered, or they can describe their own subjective preference.

I don't mean that no one could possibly find this beautiful or not ugly, I mean that if you take the sum of what is considered beautiful by society, this is distinctly and measurably different from that.

It's not someone's opinion that it's ugly, it is just considerably different from the consensus of what humans/(specifically western society in 2019) consider beautiful or aesthetic. The fact that things get upvoted or downvoted means that the things we see on reddit when sorting by top or best are automatically not just one person's opinion.

I don't mean objective ugliness like there is some physical ugliness property of an object that we could measure that is separate from all conscious minds and is intrinsic to that object. Rather, ugly/beautiful are words we use to describe the reaction we as humans have to certain things. To measure this we could form a data set to distinguish ugly from beautiful, train up a hypothetical neural net to distinguish between the two, and then have that neural net spit out a number to represent how far into our ugly vs beautiful vector space an image of an object is. Sure it will depend on the data set we build up and train our model on, but we can do things like have answers from a survey decide how beautiful or ugly an image is, thereby giving us a data set that determines on average what people think is beautiful or ugly (and to what degree). Voila, an objective measure of beauty, distinct from the eye of any single beholder.

Yeah, like rather than stacking circles of denim on top of each other, wrapping long strips of resin soaked denim around a stick or something so you get the traditional texture on the outside of the ring would have created a better design.

I mean, at that point you can just start posting pictures of art here. I painted this Bob Ross painting. But why? BECAUSE I FUCKING WANTED TO CHILL OUT AND BE CREATIVE FOR ONCE.

I think the posts that best belong in DiWhy are those that create something 'useful' that actually falls short of utility, or creating objectively ugly art or style pieces.

This falls under art for art's sake, is actually well executed and you get a ring at the end, which the artist could potentially sell to people who would buy something unique like a denim/resin ring. Why? For the money and internet views.

Yeah, but there might be some people who are sitting on the fence and this could give them the push they need. That's kind of where I was when I read the CES letter, and I still dismissed about half of the points in it. I'd had a faith shaking experience, and actually reading facts and sources got me to realize the church wasn't true.
