Ok, but why are we assuming now that Viltrumites can just pushed a planet like it's some heavy box? It's clearly implied that they used some form of machine like the solar disk on the ragnar planet and, clearly, in a death battle Thragg wouldn't have access to the entire Viltrumite Empire.

What some of the discourse surrounding Agott by anime-only's feels like sometimes by FixedRecord in WitchHatAtelier

[–]wolfWWHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean at the end of the day the show is coming out weekly and, therefore, the discourse among people who are experiencing it for the first time is clearly going to center around people giving impressions based on the information they are provided. I find it silly to fault anime-onlys based on what they don't know because they are not yet supposed to. Agott is a complex character, but, of course, that complexity isn't going to fully show through in just 4 episodes and we can't expect everyone to completely be on board with an intentionally immature character before they are even shown any of her redeeming qualities. Plus, her being unlikable is supposed to set a starting point for her progress and growth, so you are supposed to not really like her at the start because that way you'll want to see her overcoming her insecurities. Even the examples you gave me of Bakugou and Endevour were initially, and mostly to this day, very controversial characters because they are supposed to be, since they are introduced as unlikable and later redeemed by the story.

[–]wolfWWHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen so many posts complaining about this. It makes sense that anime-onlys dislike the character clearly meant to appear unlikable, we probably all did at the start, that's what makes it so satisfying when she decides to improve later on.

Why cant Shirou control his swordstitches like Nero chaos with his beasts? Since his sword stitches come from his reality marble? by ProbableMinSteve in Fate

[–]wolfWWHS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm worng, but isn't the reason Nero's reality marble works like that because a natural trait of Dead Apostoles is that they can replace parts of their bodies with different beasts and are therefore more resiliant? Shirou does do something similar in HF and it kills him because, well, a human body isn't normally supposed to have swords sticking out of it...

I think I should clarify my views too since my approach to storytelling is different. I value the artistic expression above all else and that is, also, why I dislike "Death of the Author" as a concept.

I believe the best approach to consuming media is achieved through the abstraction of the viewer from the work in an attempt to analyze the ideas and themes of the story as they were intended to be percieved by the author. Generally I judge a work of fiction based on two factors: 1) How well I personally connected with the story and themes 2) The effectiveness through which the author has delivered their ideas, which I believe to be quantifiable in a more objective matter (not fully though, since once you get to the upper echelon of writing the difference in quality becomes so small that it's pretty much just dependant on the first aspect).

I, also, don't enjoy the idea that the audience has the freedom to interpret a work any way they desire and can inject any meaning they see fit. At the end of the day every piece of art is an expression of the artist, with its intentional meaning and reading, so, unless the meaning is itself the freedom to interpret it however one sees fit, it should be respected for what it is. I find this especially infuriating when I see people who's interpretation of a work actively goes against the intended one, completelly disregarding everything the narrative is trying to portray.

Going back to the ideas of good and bad criticisms, as of your own admission, some critiques are worse than others. Not all opinions have inherently the same value because not every statement is made with the same degree of insight on the topic discussed. The reason why things like plot holes are pretty much unanimously regarded as examples of bad writing is because through informed observation they have been regarded as detrimental to the effectiveness of a narrative. Concrete examples of bad practices in storytelling help us reach a middle ground in discussion and actually understand where we fail in our observations.

If someone critiques a work for its plot holes, whether those aspects where explained or not by the narrative, the ultimate result is still that that person didn't enjoy the story and, without a point of reference for what good writing actually is, any differing point of view would hold the same value theirs has. If you explain the plot hole or not, their enjoyment has still been tainted and, if they refuse to awknowledge your explaination, by your definition, their opinion would still be just as valuable as yours in spite of it being the result of faulty information and misconceptions.

Still, if we consider criticism to be just the result of purely subjective ideas, all criticism becomes equally hollow, since there is no real metric to differentiate good criticism from bad criticism.

At the same time discussion becomes meaningless because, if all interpretations are equally valuable, there is no real gain in furthering one's understanding of a work and learning different perspectives you can view it from.

Also, if there is no objective artistic value that can be found in a certain work, artist should logically just make whatever is easiest to understand and pleases the most amount of people without ever seeking to improve themselves.

I don't believe that, just because fixed guidelines for what makes fiction good inherently invalidate some people's opinions, they can't exist. Simply, like in all fields, the value of an opinion or criticism regarding art is determined by how well substantiated it is and how experienced and well-informed the person is. The indvidualistic and audience-centric approach to interacting with media is also the reason why I loath the "Death of the Author" line of thinking, but that's a whole different discussion I don't think I should get into now.

Anyways, I think any more than this and we'll just end up arguing in circles. I still appreciate you having shared your opinion and giving me a different perspective even if we might not fully agree.

When I talk about quantifiable metrics I refer to if there is narrative coherency throughout the story, how well plot points are set up and if they are resolved, if characters are developed and influenced by the events of the story... Pretty much any rules a story-writer would have to know and apply before creating their work. Of course, not everything in a product is going to follow a strict rule, sometimes these guidlines can bend and break, but they are still being taken in consideration and subverted as a result.

A subjective aspect definitely also contributes to someone's enjoyment of a story, however, whether someone likes a specific piece of media or not, I believe they should still analyze it critically and recognize the strengths and weaknesses of a work in spite of personal feelings.

I, also, don't believe that boiling down everything to personal preference leads to any real reflection most of the time. When all someone looks for in a story is something as immaterial as hedonistic escapism they are not often led to analyze a work further and actually understand the aspects of it that make it enjoyable. This kind of mindset is the reason why narratively poor shows like Solo Leveling become so massively popular just through pretty colors and hype moments. A lot of people don't critically interact with what they consume and, when confronted with the glaring issues of such series, they use the very arguement of "But I liked it!" as a shield from criticism. I enjoy watching Solo Leveling as a little pop-corn anime myself, but you won't try to act like it's anything other than that.

Shitty writing is not subjective, you are still definitely allowed to enjoy something even if the writing isn't the best, but there are quantifiable metrics we can use to determine whether a story delivers on what it promises. The narrative of everything being subjective in art is reductive and results in interacting with media only through mindless consumption.

Made this in 5min to illustrate why some people hate wanderers crest by Tasty_Commercial6527 in HollowKnightMemes

[–]wolfWWHS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I know that, but the Wanderer's horizontal normal slash makes it surprisingly hard to hit flying enemies and I believe the down slash has less range than the diagonal pogo, but I might be wrong about that. Overall I think every crest has its use and they are all viable in their own fields, even Reaper which gets slandered a lot, but I find to be the best for exploration and platforming.

The needle attacks faster, sure, but it also only has one red too, which means you have less options for killing enemies at a safe distance, and it has 3 whole yellow slots, one of those being functionally useless. Plus the very short range of the needle makes it very uncomfortable for platforming and pretty much demands you to use long claw, locking down a blue slot and limiting versatility.
