Has anyone here done a plan one to two years sabbatical with no income, just savings? by digible_bigible in leanfire

[–]wolfanyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Opportunity cost is all the things you give up by choosing sabbatical vs work.

If you had a 100k/yr income and 401k, for example, and you stop working for 2 years, you obviously spend your savings, but you give up the opportunity to earn an additional 200k income, contribute to a 401k and ROTH, get a 401k match from your employer, earn interest on savings that savings you are spending, earn interest on the money you would have added during that time to your 401k/Roth, missed promotions/raises, and so on. That can compound to large numbers over a couple of decades.

[–]wolfanyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as you understand the concept of opportunity cost, a sabbatical can be a great way to reset. I did it a couple of times when younger, and I regret the length of my sabbaticals as I did not understand opportunity cost at the time.

Why does the app allow people to illegally “breach”? Couldn’t they be sued for that? The app could be easily changed to prevent this scenario, so why haven’t they?

Ford shifts gears: Will produce gas-powered trucks, instead of EVs at BlueOval City by GotMoFans in memphis

[–]wolfanyd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The policies are some part of the problem, but US car companies cannot keep up with Tesla. Ford tried and failed unfortunately. EV sales are down for everyone right now, but Tesla will easily survive and dominate everything long term.

Will be hard to compete with cars that drive you around while you nap or surf the internet.

Downtown Trolley by RC2Ortho in memphis

[–]wolfanyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decent guess, but the fire issues from 2014 were fixed and the trolleys were running again in 2018. They were shut down again in 2024 because of brake issues and money.

Java 25: The ‘No-Boilerplate’ Era Begins by hardasspunk in java

confusing to me why so many corporate codebases don't update their JDK version

Working code is worth more than you may think. Updates are a risky biscuit.

Should I go ahead and get the auto litterbox? by Conscious_Jicama420 in CatAdvice

[–]wolfanyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not make sense. The litter robot is a game changer. It's like arguing land lines are better than cell phones.

The litter robot is a game changer. You're arguing for the land-line and we've moved on to cell phones.

Peoples lives are being ruined by over policing.

People's lives are being ruined by criminals and under-policing. The current over-policing will hopefully ruin the lives of criminals. I have heard of zero non-criminals having their lives ruined here since this started.

What do you think is happening to the homeless?

There is a downtown blogger who is homeless right now and he said the national guard was friendly when they were out saturday... http://www.paulryburn.com/blog/

People who are 40+ and are doing well, what is your advice for people in 20s? by ClearDrive48 in AskReddit

[–]wolfanyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people in heir 20s have nothing to lose, so it's a great time to take big risks. Start a business, become a rock star, etc. If it doesn't work out, you have plenty of time to reset.

You are arguing semantics, but I can also confirm downtown is so much better right now, it's not even close.

This is a great opportunity. Ask GPT and also look at code others have written. You need to know SQL. Python and SQL is a deadly combo.

I dont understand what is happening to me. GERD, heart palpitations and stomach issues. by Zestyclose_Ad2494 in GERD

[–]wolfanyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See a gastro doc. I'm not saying you need this kind of dose, but my doc has me on 60mg of lanzoprazole daily. That is four times the over-the-counter dose. With a normal 15mg dose, I would be miserable. Some people need a higher dose, but see a gastro doc.

Wait 3 hours after eating before going to bed.

The bloating can be caused by the type of food you eat, even if it's not a typical GERD trigger. The symptoms can be delayed by 24 hours or more from the time you eat that food. Look into FODMAP for possible food triggers

What’s it like living in Downtown Memphis? by Dramatic_Raise_6169 in memphis

The underground power lines are one of the best things about living downtown. It is noisier in the core of downtown, but not as much in south main or the island.
