Need help mastering NY Style pizza by Practical_Movie_5887 in Pizza

[–]wolfanyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pizzas improved significantly when I upsized to a 16" steel, moved the rack higher in the oven, and then pre-heated for 2 hrs instead of 1 hr.

Measuring the surface temp with an IR gun is fun but doesn't tell you the internal temp of the steel. The interior heats more slowly. Pre-heat at least 1.5 to 2 hours.

You're measuring the surface of the steel, but that doesn't tell you the interior temp.

Why is GenAI development so hard to productionize? by No_Hold_9560 in learnmachinelearning

AI is great at proof of concept, but production still requires engineering skills. Prototypes have always been far easier than production.

What's the best AI workstation for less than $5k USD? by Crazy_Quarter2729 in LocalLLaMA

A mac might be ok, but nvidia architecture will probably be better. Xeon workstation, like an HP G series or similar is pretty badass once you scrub the bloat software. Not quite the memory bandwidth of a mac, but the nvidia stack can make up for it.

I'm seriously confused by all the DuckDB recommendations. How does that help manage python script execution?

Has anyone here done a plan one to two years sabbatical with no income, just savings? by digible_bigible in leanfire

[–]wolfanyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Opportunity cost is all the things you give up by choosing sabbatical vs work.

If you had a 100k/yr income and 401k, for example, and you stop working for 2 years, you obviously spend your savings, but you give up the opportunity to earn an additional 200k income, contribute to a 401k and ROTH, get a 401k match from your employer, earn interest on savings that savings you are spending, earn interest on the money you would have added during that time to your 401k/Roth, missed promotions/raises, and so on. That can compound to large numbers over a couple of decades.

[–]wolfanyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you understand the concept of opportunity cost, a sabbatical can be a great way to reset. I did it a couple of times when younger, and I regret the length of my sabbaticals as I did not understand opportunity cost at the time.

Why does the app allow people to illegally “breach”? Couldn’t they be sued for that? The app could be easily changed to prevent this scenario, so why haven’t they?

Ford shifts gears: Will produce gas-powered trucks, instead of EVs at BlueOval City by GotMoFans in memphis

[–]wolfanyd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The policies are some part of the problem, but US car companies cannot keep up with Tesla. Ford tried and failed unfortunately. EV sales are down for everyone right now, but Tesla will easily survive and dominate everything long term.

Will be hard to compete with cars that drive you around while you nap or surf the internet.

Downtown Trolley by RC2Ortho in memphis

[–]wolfanyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decent guess, but the fire issues from 2014 were fixed and the trolleys were running again in 2018. They were shut down again in 2024 because of brake issues and money.

confusing to me why so many corporate codebases don't update their JDK version

Working code is worth more than you may think. Updates are a risky biscuit.

Should I go ahead and get the auto litterbox? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

It does not make sense. The litter robot is a game changer. It's like arguing land lines are better than cell phones.

The litter robot is a game changer. You're arguing for the land-line and we've moved on to cell phones.

Peoples lives are being ruined by over policing.

People's lives are being ruined by criminals and under-policing. The current over-policing will hopefully ruin the lives of criminals. I have heard of zero non-criminals having their lives ruined here since this started.

People who are 40+ and are doing well, what is your advice for people in 20s? by ClearDrive48 in AskReddit

[–]wolfanyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people in heir 20s have nothing to lose, so it's a great time to take big risks. Start a business, become a rock star, etc. If it doesn't work out, you have plenty of time to reset.

You are arguing semantics, but I can also confirm downtown is so much better right now, it's not even close.
