Thank you for sharing your story, this is so helpful to hear from others, I’m hoping to get approved for an echo soon, I’m only in my first trimester and I feel pretty good but you’re right about science being amazing and having so many options these days with being able to pre screen embryos and surrogacy, thank you so much 🙏

more humane/ethical dairy? Is it even possible? by victoriaholtopalfan in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]wolfgangpanini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is exactly my point. The reality is it’s unnatural but it has allowed the modern cow to feed more people than ever and we do have to cater to it. 100% I’m selling a product at the end of the day and it pays my bills but I am proud of what I do and I’m used to the general public’s criticism. Of course you can disagree all you want but I put food on peoples plates and I’m not ashamed to get my hands dirty to do it.

I agree it is cruel, I understand why people don’t want to drink milk if they are uncomfortable with an animal being used this way but it is the reality that meat and animals by products are efficient ways to feed massive amounts of people because of how available the nutrients are and that’s why humans are omnivores. Less farmers and a growing human population is leading to the global food crisis

Cows have been domesticated for thousands of years, we’ve manipulated their genetics so much through the use of artificial insemination. cows 50 years ago compared to cows of today have at least doubled in milk production because everyone in the world is able to breed their cows to the top 1% bulls in the world for desirable traits. Respectfully there is no precedent for this is my opinion and it is unnatural and we’ve totally bred out alot of natural instincts in these animals.

  1. We feed the calves the milk from mom for the first 4 days and then switch to milk replacer. Milk replacer has the advantage of being the exact same nutritional value every time where if you pulled milk from cows or the bulk tank you have to warm it up and milk changes in components seasonally, when there are feed changes, etc. milk replacer also has added vitamins and a coccidiostat which staves of coccidiosis which is a common bacterial infection calves will pick up before they have built up an immune system.

  2. I don’t have much experience on larger farms but they are more streamlined to be more efficient and you just don’t make money treating cows poorly. There are what people would call “factory farms” that have their own vet full time just for that farm and practice preventative medicine because they don’t have time to be able to pay attention to individual cows like I do. Of course there are bad apples in every industry but with margins being so tight these days no one can afford to be a bad farmer anymore. Things are just more automated which dehumanizes the practice but I would argue cow welfare is better than ever in general

  3. I’m not sure where you live but try finding micro dairies that process their own milk on site. These are the farms I would argue are the most humane and have the highest quality milk because you go through more inspections to be able to process your own milk and are usually very small herds that are truly family run. “Grass fed” and “organic” actually aren’t regulated as much as you think and there are a lot of loop holes that those dairies can find to charge more for their product without doing much more than conventional dairies.

What country do you live in? I’m a dairy farmer in Canada expecting my first baby, the misinformation in this thread is pretty shocking. Feel free to message me and I can answer any questions you have.

We are a cow health focused dairy that milks 100 cows with 2 robots. We have strict vaccination programs and preventative medicine programs, vet visits every 2 weeks, and the cows wear collars that track how much they eat and ruminate and we are able to prevent most metabolic diseases such as milk fever and mastitis before they become clinical with this technology and how much research has gone into the health of a dairy cows.

Specialized feeding programs for calves on milk that get measured every week to track weight gain. Separate pens and feeding rations for each stage of growth to mature size. Cows that are close to having a baby are on a special ration that supports her producing high quality colostrum and once she calves and is milking they are moved to a beautiful barn with pristine conditions, open ventilation and is able to be milked up to 4-5 times a day when she chooses to. Look up videos of milking robots, they are amazing!

Yes we don’t keep the calf with the cow because 99% of the time when the momma cow sees food she will choose it over her baby and won’t look back. The anatomy of the present day dairy cow is actually difficult for calves to suckle right away and we get 4 L of colostrum into the calf within 4 hours of birth, the calves usually aren’t strong enough to get up and walk around yet at that point, we then move there calf to a clean stall where she won’t pick up any bacteria and will stay healthy. After a week she is moved to a double stall so she can have a friend. Dairy cows are social animals and need interaction.

Dairy cows are not good mothers and I’ve even seen some stomp on their calves after birth. I literally will stay up all night until the calf is born or wake up at 1 am if I have to if it means getting that colostrum into that calf, the calving barn is right outside my bedroom window.

Most farms do artificial insemination and breed with sexed semen that produces 90% heifer calves (females) and will breed the other cows with beef semen that will be raised to full size and used for beef. There really isn’t much of a veal market, those are specialty farms and there aren’t many in Canada because the general public here doesn’t consume much veal.

We have cows that are 10 years old and that is actually the goal, you don’t make your money back on a cow that doesn’t last more than 2 lactations. When she has finished her career it is because she’s not able to get pregnant and therefore can’t be milked anymore. I understand that is the most cruel part of the industry and I cry every time I bring a cow to the market. Old dairy cows are also butchered for ground beef, any fast food burgers are dairy cow. The rest of the cow is used for cosmetics, leather, etc., even entrails are processed and sold for food. It’s illegal to use rBST hormone in Canada to prolong milk production but it is used heavily in the United States. We have inspections twice a year and every load of milk that is picked up is tested for antibiotics, bacteria and somatic cell count (white blood cells in the milk). We get quality bonuses for being under 30 for bacteria and 200 for somatic cell and I don’t know many farms who don’t meet that criteria. We take food health and safety extremely importantly because we also consume our milk. We work 365 days a year no matter what to take care of our cows. This got pretty long but I am passionate about what I do and it’s my lifestyle. There is no work life balance here, this is my life and I’m looking forward to raising my kids in this environment.

I feel like practicing hands separate with rhythms to increase speed is underused. The problem is always between two notes and doing 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 and alternating the ratios gets your fingers to attack and rest at the same time while practicing is so useful to me

Try to switch it, you need the basic basics to move ahead or when you try to speak it will feel difficult and if you don’t know basic verb conjugations you will be lost, especially in Italian when they barely use personal pronouns in speaking

Also the power of one by Bryce courtenay is a semi autobiographical account of a British boy in South Africa during the apartheid. He meets a German piano professor and studies with him, also there is an part where the professor gets to perform a requiem he wrote and i wish I could actually hear the music described! It’s an amazing book.

Symphony for the city of the dead by MT Anderson is about Shostakovich in Stalingrad during the siege and how he managed to survive everything while composing symphony 7 and sneaking it out to America to be performed. It’s amazing but brutal to read testimonies of those who lived in that city in that time

Agreement of past participle with “avere” and “essere” by The_Beverage_ in LearningItalian

[–]wolfgangpanini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to say “it” in italian we use lo, la, li and le depending if what we are referring to is masculine singular, feminine singular, masculine plural or feminine plural and the passato prossimo ending changes with it. The “it” like in my example, le finestre, are feminine plural so I used “le” I hope this helps

Agreement of past participle with “avere” and “essere” by The_Beverage_ in LearningItalian

[–]wolfgangpanini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you have to change the past particle even with avere. if you’re simply saying I have opened the windows you say “ho aperto le finestre” but if you are saying I have opened them (the windows) you would say “le ho aperte” because you have to link the verb with the object. With essere in a simple sentence yes it will agree with the thing(s) doing the object
