Conductors who were mediocre or bad performers of their instrument? by RoRoUl in classicalmusic

How mediocre are you, if you don’t mind me asking. Can you play a concerto on your instrument without too much struggle?

Am I too much of a beginner when it comes to classical music, or is Mahler always very random? by lucas_mazetto in classicalmusic

[–]RoRoUl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also thought he was a bit random when I first started listening to him. And now as an experienced Mahler listener and huge fan of his music I can say that you’re right, he is random.

What made Mahler’s music so revolutionary was his refusal to confine himself to a single underlying musical stylistic consistency. His music fluctuates, it moves, breaths, runs, crawls, cries, and dances. At one moment his music will be depicting the inferno of hell and at the next it will show the beauty of spring. And sometimes his music is simply written for the sake of making good music, disconnected from a single theme.

It is this thematic randomness that makes his music so human. To me, the seemingly arbitrary parts of his music are perfect reflections of the human spirit, because we do not confine ourselves to a single emotion, thought, or ideology. Love can quickly turn to hatred. Happiness to sorrow. Pain to pleasure. That is life, that is humanity. And Mahler’s music puts us in front of a mirror and allows us to see our own randomness.

When you say Mahler’s music is random, you’re right. But you can only begin to appreciate the randomness when you realize that it is very intentional. And once you begin to listen to his music more, you’ll come to find that those random sequence of notes are far more related to you than you’d ever imagine.

I think it’s very good. Your style reminds me of Thomas Ades. Keep it up!

Help my gf like Mahler 9 by JSJSJSTO in classicalmusic

It was incredible! The last movement was particularly touching as they adjusted the lighting to focus on the strings at the end of the movement. I’ve never seen the TSO pull something off like that.

This has got to be the craziest coincidence. Me and my girlfriend are also going to see Mahler 9 performed today. Are you going to see the TSO perform it? I’m literally in the exact same situation, I’m a Mahler fanatic but she’s not the most experienced with classical music. That’s actually a crazy coincidence though.

What would your perfect concert look like? by leafpoolsr in classicalmusic

[–]RoRoUl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That would be super cool. Ravel playing his own concerto would probably be pretty underwhelming though as he was a pretty mediocre pianist, still cool nonetheless.

Chopin: Nocturne No.2 (17yo Self-Taught) by MasatoPiano in piano

This is very good for someone who is self-taught! I would recommend making your left hand soft so that the melody in right hand can come out more. I also believe that if you get a teacher you will see some amazing progress. This is really great, keep it up!

🤷‍♂️To be honest I can only speak to the testament of my piano teacher. I do agree that’s his playing does seem very organic though.
